    Prekshas Terrible Day

One morning on Friday, 6th October 2009, I did not go to work. I was not alone. Many people were not

able to get to work either on that terrible day.

The first signs of trouble had appeared the evening before while I was having dinner at a lovely

restaurant with my husband, Mohit. There were very high winds, far stronger than normal for the time

of year. As we made our way home, we were nearly blown over and a tree fell over right next to us!

Further horror was yet to come. We put the television on in our bedroom but the reception was very

poor. The wind pounded mercilessly on the windows. Luckily our new double-glazing was able towithstand the pressure, but half an hour later as we lay in bed, we thought that the whole front wall

    was about to give way.

We held our breath as we listened to the smashed tiles, broken chimney pots and fallen trees

clattering in the street outside. We drew the curtains and listened to the wind which was overturning

cars, demolishing buildings and uprooting trees, which were falling into the streets. It was awful. I

gripped Mohit's hand tightly. It was very late when we finally managed to fall asleep.

    54. Preksha did not go to work on Friday, 6th October 2009 because

    a) She had been to a restaurant b) She was nearly blown over

    c) She had got into trouble d) The roads were blocked by fallen trees

    a) excited b) full

    c) afraid d) tired

We were up at six o'clock the next morning. The wind was still howling though not as fiercely as

before. We turned on the television to learn what had happened. Many trees and buildings had been

destroyed. Happily there were only a few fatalities, but damage to forests and buildings was

    enormous.

The official advice was to stay indoors, but ignoring the perils I decided to go to work. There were

some reports to finish, which had to be emailed that day. The road to the train station was an

unrecognisable tangle of fallen trees. I threaded my way through this unknown jungle and arrived at

the railway station. Unfortunately however all the trains had been cancelled. I called the office to let

them know I would not be able to make it, but no-one answered. I was clearly not the only one in this

predicament, so I slowly returned home instead.
