SWAMIIKII AT GURUVAYUR(A Report)

With a small baitd of followers, SriSwamiji left for Guruvayur on 19-2-78. Itwas 'a Sunday. The day's programmecomprising of the usudl archana, homa, bhajana and pravachana, had just endedwhen he started. He and his followers leftthe Ashram at 6-15 in the evening.

The party reached Guruvayur viaCalicut at about 2 A. M. on 20-2-79.Sriyuts Parasuram and G. G. Krishna l-verand a few others welcomed Sri Swarniji with[rcorna ]ltrmbha.

Sri Krishna Iyer had made excellendarrangements for Sri Swami.ii's stay as rvell as

ftlr that of his entourage

The trip to Guruvayur was in many' ways a rather interesting one. When half

the distarice had been covered, Sri Swamijibegan to entertain his followers wirh stoiiesof a humorous turn and a didactic slant. This helped them overcome sleep as well as

the strain of the journey.

(The stories wili be narrii.:,-d elsewhereseparateli,).

When they were soon to reach Calicut,Sri Swarni-ii sLrggested that they ma.ke a stop-over and rvalk about for hirlf an hour. Theplace where they were to halt was invitinglycaln and beautiful. But the follorvJrs did

'Bhakthimala

not quite like the idea. They were rathereager to drive on and reach Celicut as early

' as-possible. It was, they thought, too late. They drove on for about five miles, andthen they were on a wrong tra-ck. Tlieydiscovered this after having coverecl anothertcn miles. They dfove back'and set the cargoing again on the proper road to Calicut,

The half hour which they thought theywould s&ve had, however, been lost.Swamiji remarked that they corrld not avoidthat half-hour break, however they tried tomanage it.

At 2 O' clock rn the early hours of themorning, Mondav, 20-2-jB, they were all arGuruvayur. They rested until dawn.

At 8 O'clock Sri Swarniii visited SriKrishna Temple. The president and theMembers of the Temple Committee gave hima poorna kumbha welcome. The viSit overSri Swamiji went to Sri Ruknini KalyaniMandapam. He conducted archana thereand distributed tirtam and prasadam.

At 3 in the afternoon, Sri Swamijiwatched an elephant race (aane ottam). This is an event of traditional importanceand draws people from various parts of theregion. In {he past, the tradition avers. the

. temple of Guruvayu, rappiln dicl nol possessany elephants for temple service: Once, at aKrishna Festival celebrations, a tamed

clephant came.frorn some-where, went roundthe temple, and stood in front of it.Nobody knew how it happened. Everylpdy wondered at the "happening, however.

The practice of using elephants in alltemple observances began at that tirne. Tomark the o$asion, an elephant race is held

every year. All the elephants in the elephantyard, a mile from the Krishna Temple, aremade to run toward the Temple. Crowdsof people line.along both sides ofthe tracktp watch the race. Sri Swamiji was out-side the temple, watching the racin8elephants

This year's title to pr"-.ioio.nre waswon by Raman Kutti

The.winning elephant is worshipped andannointed. It becomes installed as the templeelephant for the year.

The temple authorities wanted to havethe function inside the temple. But SriSwamiji desired that it be held outside. He

wanted to see and bless all the elephdntsthat had lost the race.

The race is quite unlike any horse-race.It is a race conducted for a godly purposeSo said Sri Swamiji.

The Guruvayurappan Festival was tobe inaugurated by Sri Swamiji at 6-30 in theevening. Invocation by Smt. SankamNeelakantan, welcome speech by Sri T. C.Balakrishna Nair, Administrative Officer orthe temple, and Presidential. Address by Lt.Col. T. S. Nair, were thq principal items ofthe programme o,n the inauguration day.

2

Sri Swamiji inaugurated the function bythe singing of bhajans and a short speech. In his speech, he spoke of qualities attributedto God, and of His infinite powers. Wordslag behind, he said, and they can never hope

to describe them adequately. God hasmyriadsof forms and 'myriads of names.Yet God is one. And bhakti is tbe onlyeasy way of realizing Him. A life of bhaldibrings supreme' happiness. But to live such

a life it needs, of course, much persistenteffort, that is Sadhana, he added. Bhajan, bhakti, yoga are ways of winning Him. Itis likely that men folget God, caught as theyare in life's tr<rubles anel turmoils. TheyLre also likely to forget Hirn in theirhappiness. Festivals and jayantis remindman of the need to turn to him and seek hisavour. Worship and prayer, chanting and

singing, dance and poetry are means in thidirection. 'Your observing this aane ottamsevery 3'ear', Sri Swamiji said, 'has a gieatsignificance. To the wild, self-willed elephrnt, the hook is applied, which works by sending'hirn"running along the road to the ternple.Similarly, man inqhis egoism is like the wildbeast. Leaving aside his self-pride. heshould ledrn to rush toward God. God isfuil of kindness. He is forgiving. He has

an infinitude of names and forms. Menrealise him in one form or in another. Suchcelebrations as the present one have been invogue from times imiremorial. They help

men to turn to God. Today .we inauguratgthe festival with the kindling of this lamp.

The lamp is God's chaitanya (soul) form.Physical disturb4nces, mental distresses, hard -ships of life and spiritual anxieties are clearedby Him. Guruvayurappan has settled Him:self in this place for that very purpose.

The Inaugural Function was an

impressive ceremony. Swamiji's bhajan and

his benedictory speech produced a great

effect on the gathering' The devotees were

highly pleased. They experienced a sort ofspiritual uplift rvhich was intoxicating.

After routine worship on the morning

of Tuesdal', February 22, Sri Swamiji paid avisit to Sri Aniam Madhavan l'lamboodri'Sri Namboodri is a great bhakta' a

bhagavata. He has dedicated his life to the

spreading of the cult of Narayana bhajan'

He is a god-realised soul. This gleat saint

is belived to have seen Gurtlvayurappan and

talked to Him. He had a vision of Sri

Swamiji reclining on a bed in the house in a

meditative posture. As soon as Sri Swamiji

entered the house Sri Namboodri welcomed

him, crying aloud 'Guruvayappa' and

'Hari Narayan'. It was a moment ofsupreme joy

Tt the Namboodri.

As the Swamiji and the others were

being driven to Sri Namboodri's house,

Swamiji had said : 'He who has read and

had, at the time, engageC on the

construction of Parthasarati Mandir. Theyprayed to the Swamiji to bless this work,so that it would be completed withoutdelaying impediments. Sri Swamijideclared that piece of cievoted rvork wouldfinish unimpeded.

.. Then they went to the temple of MammiyuruMahadeva, the resident deity of Curu_vavayur Kshetra. Its lsau1y is of a unique

. kind. The lord of this temple, it is said, has made over to Guruvayurappan all hisgrandeur, and has chosen to live in seclirs-ion. Unwilling to let Siva live alone andaway, Lord Narayana has come to abidewith him there jn the same parthasaratitemple.

Lord Krishira in child_form has cometo be known as Guruvayurappan. In thisguise the great Lord has .been-protecting

A watch'man by narne Veeranna came

running to him. He said : , Why did youcall nre, sir ? what do you Want done ? '

' In the presence of the watchman, the oldirresoluble quarrel over the name begande 4ovo. The watchmen listened patientlyand then said : .Why should you quarrel atall, sir'

. Tenali Ramakrishna- Don't ask mcwho's to blame you bad better ask theman in the garret who has been a witness tothis quarrel. (He pointed his finger in thedirection of the thief in the garret)

The thief was broug.ht down. He wasgiven the treatment that hc deserved, andwas allowed to go.

The thief was hoodwinked. The wife wasunable to guess why her husbantl behaved inthg manner he had lhat nighr. It is so withregard to any and every happening jn life.Though we may not sometimes understantlthe reason behind any or some happening,i t is clear, however; that no event takesplace witho it a purpose behind it.

ONE NIGHT STORY 2

A thiefentered the backyard ofa house,There was a well there and. beside it, atulasi plant, tall and bush1,. 'the thief hidhimseif behind it, and waited for an opportu-

nity to break into the house.

'Ihe master of the house came homelate that night. He went to the backyardwith a view to washing his hands and feet.He felt sure that there was a thief 'behind

the tulasi bush.

He called his wife to bring him water. When it was brought he gargled the mouthwith it. He then spat it out upon the thiefbehind the tulasi bush. It was obviouslydorie wantonly. Hb asked for more water. He asked again and again. Every time hegargled and spat, gargled and spat upon thethief. The poor fellow endured it all. Heremained rnum all the while, obviouslyhelplessly.

Tho wife became wild with rage astherc seemed to be no end to her man'sdemand fo1, and her supply of, water. Atlast, instead of a pot of wdter, she ,broughthim a bucket full of water. He emptied iton the poor, helpless thiefbehind the bush.He asked fgr another bucketful. Now shebegan to help him with bucket after bucketof water drawn from the well. Each tim"the man emptied the bucket upon the thief, spitting the water upon him. '

All this while rhe thief had no suspicionthat the master of the house knew of hishiding behind the tulasi plant.

The man, gfter sometime, turned togargling and spitting upon his own wife. This frightened her. She was now surr thather" husband had gone off his mind. She

shouicd aloud for help.

Bhakthimala

A small crowd collected at the well.Everybody watched'the master of the housewith a rather curious look. The man turnedto the people and said : 'Gentlemen, she ismy lawful wife. I spat upon her once. Shecould not tolerate it at all. Then how muchmore intolerable it should have been.to thsman behind the tulasi bush, I ask. He hassuffered silently for quite a long time thisvery treament, an almost endless spittingupon him ofpotfuls and bucketfuls ofwater.

The wife was agog with joy andadmiration at the way her clever husbandhandled the situation.

The Thief was oaught.

Whatever happens is for the good, is alcsson which one can draw from this storv.

STORY 3

From there we .iourneyed back toKolhapur, via Satara. All along the way

We had a feeling that a satsang rneet was

By then five tourist buses had drawn up

Near by there was a man standing.

He begged Swamiji to visit his house and

Whcn Sri Krishna was thus doing

penance ihere appeaied some evil spirits with

dreadful features. They were shooting arrows

Their eyes wore viscous' looks' Their noses

were flat. hairs thick and shoulders high'

They had sunken stomachs and were hunch-

bent. They were shrieking and moving

ike strange inachines.

Of the two, one wore human intestines

pricking fresh corpses with the point of the

trident and scattering them. In this way

the spirit was enjoying his sport.

The second spirit also held by his

teeth a human corpse and a skull in his

hands. He had torn thc corpse into two

parts and rvrapped one round his waist like

a belt. There was a garland of human

skulls around his neck. He had smeared

his body with fresh blood and flesh and held

a blunt swgrd in one hand. Grinding

his teeth he was accompanying his brother-

spirit. Though immersed in penance Sri

Krishna heard the noise made by the spirit-

twins and yet remained undisturbed.

Then the two spirits who were gulping

hot blood and shouting that Sri Krishna

should be made to drink the blood, came

near the Lord and began to recite His names.

They said - " Murahari, O friend of the

devotees, Damodara, havd PitY on us.

cruel. A person like Me cannot tolerate

them, Behind ycur sweet words is hidden

a cruel heart. I shall therefore consume

you by the fire of my anger. If you foveyour lives get away from here ". Warning

the spirits thus Sri Krishna became silent.

THE FUTURE RELIGION(An excerpts frotn Sri Swamiji's discourse)

Veclanta teaches us that we need not go

out of ourselves to know the truth. All the

past and all theftrture are here in tlte present'

This present is all that is. One nroiuent in

i uflnite time is quite as comirlete ancl all

inclusive as every other moment. All that

is and was and will be is here in the present.

We, with five senses, look uPon this

world and find it gross, having colour, form,

sound and the like. When we go beyond

the power of the senses, the whole univefse

appears as spirit and God. Things are not

what they seem. i

All the heavens and everything are here,

now,. and they really are nothing but

appearances on the Divine presence. Thispresence is much greater than the earths and

heavens. Some persons imagine that this

worlcl is bad and imagine that heaven'is

sorne where else. This wolld is not bad.

It is God Himself, if we realise it. Even the

worst person is all God, perfect God. It is

very hard to understand this but can be

understood.

Vedanta formulates not

11

brotherhood but universl oneness. We are

rhe same as any other man or animal. It

is one body, one mind, one soul through

out, Spirit never dies. The apparent

death is only an internal change. All minds

are one. TheY are God's mind. God

rvalks with all feet. He speaks through all

mouths. He resides in every body. But we

have not been' able to feel it because of

individuality. Generally people. think that

men arc mortal and that theY become

irnmortal by going to heaven and see God

after death. But if we'cannot see God here,

we cannot see him after death. Immortality

is knowing ourselves a: one with all, living

in all bodies, perceiving through all minds.

It is hard to give. up ,ni, Uoa, and to

feel in other bodies. Vedanta says not to

give it up but to ranscend it. When we

practise enjoying through the whole univeise,

the whole universe becomes our body.

. We create whatever we dream and think

of. Think good and great thoughts, we

become great. The univbrsal mind is always

behind our lives. But pecple . feel that theyonly universal

Bhakthimala

Page 16: Bhakti Mala - May 1978

are sinners. When the whole universe is

full of the presence of God. where is the

place for sin or hell ? These are only our

assumptions; Why can we not assume good

things and heaven instead ofevil thingi and

hell.

- People nead not be afraid. They should.

not be laiy. They should not depend on

others for any help. Thev shorrld 'learn and

earn by doing" MerE listening to others and

reading books does not help. Practising the

truth hclps us to iealise the truth. The

great teachers and prophets show us only the

way to truth and reality. Help does not

come frorn outside. Security, strength,

wisdom and happiness should come from

with in. Men have to strive continually,

pull themselves out of difficulties, and save

themselves. To depend on others for he!p,

is no good.

To realise God that is truth, is the en

of human life. According to Vedanta God

is principle not person. - The absolute God

oftheuniverse, the creator, preserver and

destroyer of the uriiverse, is impersonal

principle. All the beings in the universe

are personal Gods. The worsliip of personal

Gods is the worship of our own selves'

Men have to wash off until they are cleansed'

of all the superstitions. The Lord is ali

blissfulness. He is the reality behind all

that exists. He is the goodness, the truth

in every thing. The beings are His

incarnattons. That is what 'is glorious'

The nearsr we are to Him, the less we wil

have occasions to cry or weep. The farther

we are from Him, the grore will long faces

come. The more we know in Him, thc

more misery vanishes.

According to Vyasa, the son ofparaasara, Bhakthi expresies itself indevotion to acts of worship and the like.
