A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT NAYANA RAMAKRISHNAN

The Hindu Temple of Minnesota warmly invites you and your family to attend our 2nd Anniversary Celebration and Pranapratishta of the last 2 mini temples, Sri Bharava and Sri Vishwakarma on the long weekend of July 3 - July 6.

With the installation of these deities, the construction of all mini-temples will be complete. All our nineteen mini-temples were fully consecrated in 2006 and 2007. Many members of our community had the privilege to sponsor the temples, and the final two are no exceptions. This Kumbabhishekam marks a unique opportunity to sponsor a temple at our beautiful Mandir.

The mini-temples of Sri Bhairava (Protector of Kasi) and Sri Vishwakarma (Presiding deity of all craftsmen, archi-tects and engineers) provides us a unique opportunity to sponsor a temple. These temples can be sponsored for $5000, and the payment can be made in installments over a five year period.

As a sponsor of the temple, you will have the opportunity to fully participate in all the Pranapratishta pujas July 3rd and 4th, if you wish.

In due course of time, we plan to recognize (with a permanent inscription) all the temple sponsors. You will be-come an integral part of our Temple's history.

You will join the company of those honorable devotees that have given so generously of themselves over the years the Hindu Mandir has been in existence.

On a personal note, I would like to share my reasons for becoming a sponsor of these two Temples. My husband's occupation and training as an engineer has entitled us to a decent living over the many years in the U.S.A. There-fore we feel privileged to have the blessings of Lord Vishwakarma. As for me, as a Hindu, I have a still unfulfilled dream of visiting Kasi sometime in my lifetime. Our Hindu Mandir Bhairavar represents "Kasi of the North" to me.

Even if you choose not to sponsor the mini temples, please join us in celebrating our big event and do consider sponsoring a puja. All details are on the web and inner pages of this Patrika

The Mandir still needs you to sponsor the Bhairava and Viswakarma Mini Temples. This will be the last chance for

you to sponsor a Mini temple within the enclosed complex. Consider leaving a lasting legacy for your future genera-

tions and make a tax deductible pledge of $5,000 to be a Sponsor. The project is not complete without you!

According to Rig Veda, Vishwakarma is the divine architect of the whole universe. He is the personifica-tion of the creative power that welds heaven and earth together. He is the son of Brahma and the official archi-tect of all the God’s palaces. Vishwabrahmapurana and Moolasthambapurana sing about a Vishwakarma who in-

carnated out of nothingness having five heads known as Sadyojatam, Tatpurusham, Akhoram, Eeshanam, and Oordham. He had multiple hands wielding trident, a club, and craftsman’s tools of creation, loads of gold jewelry, water pot, and a noose, four Vedas, Vedopangas such as Ayurveda, Dhanurveda, Gandharvaveda, Sthapatyaveda and fifth Veda of Pranavam. Five Prajapaties such as Manu, Maya, Toshatwa, Shilpy and Vishwadnya originated from his five heads. He is the presiding deity of all craftsmen. The architects and the factory owners and workers per-form the worship of Vishwakarma when the Sun enters the constellation Virgo usually on 17th September. The ceremony is performed in front of the implements of trade or a manufacturing machine. The carpenter worships the chisel, the saw etc., the weaver prays before the shuttle while the potter worships the wheel and so on. The Architects, Engineers, Blacksmiths, Coppersmiths, Goldsmiths, Stone sculptors and other artisans join in the prayers and festivities on this day. On this day an atmosphere of festivity is enriched with the rituals of prayers and flying kites. Vishwakarma as an independent God is still worshipped in many parts of India including some parts of Bengal. Vishwakarma Puja is also associated with the buoyant custom of flying kites. This occasion in a way also marks the start of the festive season that culminates in Diwali (Deepavali). All the flying chariots of God and all the divine weapons are his creation. Vishwakarma built Swarg Loka or heaven in Satya Yuga. He built the golden city of Lanka in Treta Yuga and the city of Dwaaraka in Dwaa-par Yuga. He built Hastinapur and Indraprastha in Kali Yuga. Vishwakarma is also reputed to have advented in the form of artisans in Jagannathpuri and carved and painted “icons” or Murtis of Krishna, Balaram and Subhadra from a tree. He is the God whose blessings en-abled Nal, the monkey, to build the bridge (setu) over the sea for Rama to cross across from the southern tip of India into Ravana’s Sri Lanka. According to Satpath Brahman, Vishwakarma performed a Sarvmedha Yadnya (Universal Sacrifice) in which he offered up all the creatures including himself. Thus the universe ended creating appropriate condi-tions for creating yet another new universe. Thus he demonstrated that every sacrifice can be a repetition of that first creative act. This is a representation of the drama of the cyclic process of destruction and renewal of all cos-mic life and matter. This Vishwakarma in our Hindu Mandir represents that creative divinity which has been responsible for the building and consecration of this unique, sacred and magnificent Hindu Mandir. The central worship hall is “JAGRUT” and is charged with divine energy enabling the devotees to find peace during the turbulent times, com-fort during the painful times and joyous energy during the happy times. “Bhairava is the manifestation or incarnation of Shiva. In the contemporary times, Bhairava is worshipped by millions people to receive powerful blessings from Lord Shiva. Bhairava is connected to the southern face and relates to Ma-havidya goddess named Bhairavi. She protects the disciples by purifying the body, establishing and maintaining the essential qualities for the disciple such as, humility, obedience, hard work, scriptural studies, truthfulness, non-violence, love, compassion, purity, self control and total surrender to the Guru & God. Bhairava is one of the most im-portant deities of Nepal, sacred both to Hindus and Buddhists alike. Bhairava is ornamented with a range of twisted serpents which serve as earrings, bracelets, anklets and sacred thread. He wears a tiger skin and has a dog as his divine vahana (vehicle). Bhairava himself has many manifestations, Kala Bhairava, Asitanga Bhairava, Samhara Bhairava, Ruru Bhairava, Krodha Bhairava, Kapala Bhairava, Rudra Bhairava and Unmatta Bhairava. These manifestations of Shiva have induced a huge variety of iconographical representations in many temples. Lord Kala Bhairava is considered as the guardian of temples of Lord Shiva. After locking the doors of the temple of Lord Shiva, the keys are ceremonially offered to Lord Kala Bhairava and taken back in most of the Shiva temples. There are several stories about Bhairava in various Puranas. When Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu got into an argument who is the supreme, Lord Shiva appeared as the column of fire in between them. Lord Kala Bhairava appeared from the fire and cut off the fifth head of Lord Brahma that lied in ego. The two got to understand their mistake and worshipped Lord Shiva. In “Shiva Maha-Purana” this story of “Kala Bhairava” is shown carrying the amputated fifth head of the egotistic Brahma. Yet another story of the origin of Bhairava is the tale of Sati, wife of Shiva, with undying love for him through many life cycles, Sati, the daughter of King Daksha was insulted by her father King Daksha when she offered herself to the sacrificial fire. In the form of Bhairava, Shiva is supposed to be guarding each of those “Shakti Peethas” where the remnants of Sati’s body fell. Each Shaktipeeth temple is accompanied by a temple dedicated to Bhairava. There are several famous Bhairava temples in Khatmandu valley, Ashta Bhairava at Shri. Kamanada Eshwar Temple, Kala Bhairava Temple at Ujjain, M.P. and Benaras,U.P. Lord Kala Bhairava has an abode naturally in all the Lord Shiva temples. The Varanasi (Kasi) abode is much renowned abode of Lord Kala Bhairava, as he is the protector of that whole city—the holy land of the Lord Vishwanath. Adi Sanka-racharya has sung a stotra (Kalabhairavashtakam) in praise of Lord Kala Bhairava. Even today, this ashtakam is recited by the priests of the temple of Lord Kala Bhairava in Varanasi (Kasi) before blessing the devotee with a tap by the cane of Lord Kala Bhairava. The Bhairava here in the “Hindu Mandir” is the protecting guardian who helps and energizes any devotee who seeks his blessings to overcome all the difficulties and face any challenges in this mortal existence. Padma Shri M. Muthiah Sthapathi A Indian Temple Architect and a sculptor Author: Byron Byraiah

We are very fortunate to have Shri M. Muthiah Sthapathi of Chennai, India as the temple architect for the Indianization of all the mini temples in our Maple Grove Temple. At the invitation of Mr. Palani swami, Mr. Muthiah Sthapathi visited Maple Grove, MN in 1998 when we were in the process of purchasing the land for the temple construction. He presented a traditional Hindu temple plan for the HSMN members and was well received. It took four years for HSMN members to decide the design and construction of the traditional temple in Maple Grove. Meanwhile, Mr. Muthiah Sthapathi got several temple projects in USA and other countries and we were unable to per- suade him to accept our temple Indianiza-tion work at the time as getting Visas for silpis was difficult. HSMN decided to hire another Indian temple builder from Chennai. Unfortunately in May 2005, the builder had an automobile accident in Chicago and passed away. HSMN faced a terrible road block in the Indianization of mini temples. With the help of Mr. Palani Swami, we were able to persuade Mr. Muthiah Sthapathi to accept our temple Indianization work and start the work with seven silpis from October 2005 and complete Indianization of five mini temples in June 2006. The silpis com-pleted the work on time and we were able to do the first Kumbabhisekum in July 2006, second one in 2007 and final one in July 2008, thus completing 21 mini temples under one roof, The maha gopuram will be completed in the fall of 2008 and grand opening of the temple will be done July 2009. This temple will be one of the top five largest traditional Hindu temples in North America. Temple from outside blends with Midwest landscape and inside it is a traditional temple in-viting all, providing a sense of beauty and serenity without travelling across India east to west or north to south. Our temple is the 30th temple he has completed in North America. The Sthapathi is the seventh generation of a family of temple builders in India. He received Padma Shri Award from the president of India in 1992 for his great contribution to the temple architecture and art. He was nominated as one of the top 100 Tamilians of 20th century, who had made significant contributions to the world and to Tamil nadu in the area of art and sculpture. Mr. Muthiah has under taken a mammoth task of sculpting 67.5 feet tall, the largest Samadhi statue of Lord Buddha on a granite rock in Ceylon at the Vidyasagara Pirivena Vihara, Moneragala - in the village of Rambodagalla in the Kurune-gala district. He started this project in March 2002 after the senseless destruction of the two colossal Buddha statues at

Bamiyan in Afghanistan in 2001. This statue would be his greatest contribution to humanity.

SPOTLIGHT DAMANIA FAMILY

An old adage says that it takes a village to raise a child. For the Damania family of Maple Grove, however, that village has helped raised their entire family. Ever since their move to the Twin Cities in 1985, the Damanias have enjoyed be-ing involved members of the strong and dynamic Indian-American community; Bhavesh, Arati, Siddharth, and Samarth feel especially privileged to be part of the energetic Hindu Society of Minnesota. Bhavesh and Arati came to the United States as graduate students at the University of Rhode Island in 1983, Bhavesh for his Masters in Chemical Engineering and Arati for her MBA studies. A year and a half of eating pizza daily and doing assignments together resulted in a friendship, which ultimately turned into mar-riage. Their two sons, Siddharth and Samarth, have spent their entire lives in frigid Minnesota. Bhavesh started his 14-year stint working for the Honeywell’s Tech-nology Center as a Re-search Scientist while doing his graduate stud-ies in Computer Sci-ence. Fourteen years after doing research, Bhavesh realized that his passion was in busi-ness and started full-time work on growing their book-wholesaling business. Bhavesh feels blessed and fortunate to have been involved in Hindu Society of Minnesota efforts including: being a mem-ber of the Kumbhabhishekam 2006 fund-raising team, serv-ing as a co-coordinator for the mini-temple inaugurations in Oct, 2007, coordinating the fund-raising within the Gujarati Community, coordinating the community forum after the 2006 vandalism event. Bhavesh enjoys working with dedicated volunteers in causes that strengthen and brings the Indian American community together. Bhavesh also initiated the Indo-American Educa-tion Forum to voice the Indian-American community per-spectives to policymakers. Arati has a deep interest in homeopathy, flower essence therapy, and other alternative medicines. She enjoys creative pursuits and feels blessed when given the opportunity to portray her artistic vision on stage with kids. Through the years, Arati has choreographed several dances, dramas, and skits for Gujarati Samaj and Hindu Mandir Holi and Diwali programs. Arati has a passion for holistic thinking and life-style. Siddharth will be heading off to college this fall for his un-dergraduate studies. His bond with his community is a deep

and a permanent one. He specially feels fortunate that the Hindu Society and the Gujarati Samaj gave him the platform to perform on stage. Since the age of five, between the an-nual Diwali and the Holi celebrations, Siddharth has per-formed in nearly 30 dances and 9 skits and has been part of the “Crazy Desis” dance group. Siddharth is most in his element when he is able to perform on the stage with his peers be it dance or skits. Siddharth says that, on stage, he really feels in his element, expressing himself through rhythm and sequence. The electric feel of coordinated step, camaraderie with fellow dancers, and lively connection with the audience is a clear reason why he highly anticipates each performance. The youth camps sponsored by the Hindu So-ciety of Minnesota helped Siddharth develop lifelong friend-ships and a keen appreciation for the rich Hindu heritage.

Samarth, who will be en-tering Breck high school this upcoming year, also feels fortunate to have been given the stage by Hindu Mandir to bring out his hidden talent, dance, with the “Balle Balle” group. Samarth has enjoyed per-forming in numerous skits for both the Hindu Mandir and the Gujarati Samaj. Samarth is an avid tennis player, has been playing the piano for over seven years, and enjoys tackling math problems.

The Damanias finds their most peaceful and blissful mo-ments at the temple while living in the midst of daily ac-tions. They believe they have been granted a priceless gift of being able to watch during their lifetime the construction of such a majestic and monumental temple just miles from their home. Perhaps the most gratifying moment for the Damania family was the work they were able to do alongside hundreds of volunteers for Minnesota’s India Earthquake Relief Fund that raised $275,000. That money helped entirely rebuild a village in Kutch, named Vajeypar, that was devastated from the earthquake of 2001. The family’s experience came full-circle when they had the opportunity to visit Vajeypar, nes-tled in the remote desert of Gujarat, and see the homes and lives that had been rebuilt due to the efforts of Minnesotans tens of thousands of miles away. Whether it the case of Vajeypar, which has undoubtedly helped hundreds of families after its reconstruction, or the Indian-American community in Minnesota, which has been such an integral component of the Damanias’ lives, a village certainly does help raise a family.
