Friends, family and fans!Thank you for joining us at our first concert in the fantastic Adrian Boult Hall. We’re thrilled that, due to the great response following our last concert, we were able to move to this bigger venue and share the fun and excitement of our performances with a larger audience! In particular, we’d like to welcome those of you who are attending a BGSO concert for the first time. Tonight, we ask that you simply sit back and enjoy the programme of blockbuster music from the world’s most famous film scores. If this evening’s performance tempts you to join our merry band of players – feel free to come and say hello during the interval, after the concert at All Bar One in Brindleyplace or log on to www.bgso.org.uk – our new website packed with concert information, videos, pictures and links to our Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and YouTube profiles!

On your way out, please give generously to our associated charity, ABPlus – a Birmingham-based organisation that provides much needed support to those living with and affected by HIV and AIDS.

After the concert, we’d be really grateful if you could take just 30 seconds and complete the questionnaire included in the programme. This will enable us to contact you first with exclusive BGSO news, as well as letting us know how to promote future concerts more effectively.

Have a great evening!

Programme Notes

Twentieth Century Fox FanfareAlfred Newman (1900-1970), arranged by Richard Tattam+

Suite from the Star Wars EpicJohn Williams (b.1932), arranged by Robert W. Smith+

i. from Star Wars, Episode I-VI: Star Wars (Main Title)

ii. from Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope: Princess Leia’s Theme

iii. from Star Wars, Episode V & VI: The Imperial March (Darth Vadar’s Theme)/ The Forest Battle

The reason for us adding the Fox fanfare to the opening of tonight’s programme is two-fold. Firstly, it sets the scene perfectly as it is, arguably, the most famous opening in film music itself! Secondly and more intriguingly, by the 1970s, the fanfare was only being used sporadically in films. George Lucas was such a fan of this now iconic opening, that he insisted it be used for Star Wars. In order for the opening to

work, John Williams composed the Star Wars theme tune in Bb major – the same key as the fanfare and so the life of the fanfare was saved with Fox using William’s original recording for all six Star Wars movies.

Selections from Phantom of the OperaAndrew Lloyd Webber (b.1948), arranged by Calvin Custer+

Phantom of the Opera has spent over 24 years on the West End stage and has been seen by over 100 million people worldwide. In 2004, Phantom made the transition to the silver screen. This medley from the show includes the main show-stopping number The Phantom of the Opera along with Think of Me, Angel of Music, The Music of the Night, Masquerade and All I Ask of You.

An American in Paris SuiteGeorge Gershwin (1898-1937), arranged by John Whitney*

Gershwin’s symphonic work, composed in 1928 was used (along with other Gershwin tunes) in an MGM’s musical An American In Paris, which won Best Picture at the Oscars in 1951. More recently, the score was used in the 1997 favourite, As Good as it Gets. Throughout the work, Gershwin sought to evoke the sights and sounds of Parisian life, seen through the eyes of a homesick American. We hear the American influence in the work through Gershwin’s use of the blues, against the backdrop of busy and chaotic French street noises.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two TowersHoward Shore (b.1946), arranged by Jerry Brubaker*

INTERVAL – to be continued...(20 minutes)

The Lord of the Rings:The Return of the KingHoward Shore (b.1946), arranged by Victor Lopez*

Shore’s music for The Lord of the Rings features many gestures (or leitmotifs) that symbolise characters and themes running through the epic tale. The score’s central theme, ‘The Ring’, returns time and time again, reflecting its all-consuming power and influence over the story’s characters. The film score has won several Academy Awards and Grammys and has become a modern classic of the genre.

Harry Potter Symphonic SuiteJohn Williams (b.1932), arranged by Jerry Brubaker*

Similar to Shore’s work, William’s includes many symbolic gestures (leitmotifs) in his scores. The tune often referred to as the main theme in Harry Potter is in fact ‘Hedwig’s theme’, and has been used extensively throughout all six films to date. John Williams, perhaps the most famous of all composers for film, has been nominated for a staggering 45 Academy Awards, though has won ‘only’ five.

iii. Anitra’s Dance

iv. In the Hall of the Mountain King

Although composed in 1875, the Peer Gynt Suite has made frequent appearances throughout modern popular culture, used extensively in both television and film. In particular, the famous fourth movement has been featured in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Funny Games, Bride Wars, Rat Race and Night at the Museum 2.

Pirates of the CaribbeanKlaus Badelt (b.1967), arranged by Ted Ricketts*

We finish tonight’s programme with a swashbuckling medley of music taken from Walt Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Much of the material in the score is taken from simple folk-like melodies – lookout for the cello solo at the beginning, and strong fanfares in the horns!

William JoyPrincipal Conductor

William Joy was born and raised in Birmingham where he still resides, studying oboe at the Birmingham Conservatoire in Birmingham City Centre. He began playing the piano at the age of 6, and proceeded to study oboe at the age of 8.

Whilst his career is still in its early stages, he has played with the likes of the CBSO’s youth orchestra, under the baton of Sakari Orano and the British Police Symphony Orchestra in various venues around the country from the Symphony Hall in Birmingham to the Royal Festival Hall in London’s South Bank.

William joined the orchestra as principal conductor for their last concert in December, and looks forward to spending many more concerts on the podium with the BGSO!

Lee FranciscoGuest Conductor

Lee dons the baton with the BGSO for the first time this concert, although he is a founding member of the group – usually found in the double bass section!

Lee Francisco completed his studies in 2009 at Birmingham Conservatoire under Richard Lewis and Tom Millar. Originally from South Wales, he started his musical education aged nine on the violin, but later opted for the bass, preferring its lower register. He has performed across the UK with several orchestras including the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and Queen’s Park Sinfonia.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself: This was really tough as I’m not interesting so I asked family and have come up with the facts that for all my life the entirity of my family have called me Tumpy but bizarrely no-one actually knows why; I am currently in the early stages of co-writing a young children’s book; my favourite activity ever is hookless crabbing; I have no idea what my real hair colour is. (Wow, that’s 4 interesting facts!)

How long have you played with the BGSO? I joined around March/April time last year so I guess it’s nearly my BGSO anniversary! Woohoo!

PLAYER PROFILEIn each programme, we interview a player of the BGSO to see what makes them tick, and to find out why they love being a member of the orchestra!

Beth Galbraith2nd Violin

Where did you hear about the BGSO? Through my sister, she’d heard about it through Facebook.

Why did you decide to join the orchestra? I loved music at school and had the opportunity to get really involved back then but when I left school I had to return all the instruments and leave all the groups and that was my music over. I’ve missed it everyday ever since but didn’t feel I had the ability to put myself out there and do anything about it. Some years later I was bought a cheap violin and played every now and then for personal pleasure on the rare occasion when no-one was in ear-shot but that was it. Years and YEARS passed then I heard about BGSO who weren’t too fussy about me being a superstar player so I came along to support my sister and give it a go. After that first rehearsal I went home with such a massive grin on my face and I still leave every rehearsal feeling that way.

What is your favourite orchestral work? Ooooh that is just too tricky. I can’t be that choosy... can I just say anything that we play?! No really... when I play with the orchestra and all of a sudden it all comes together just lovely I can’t help but smile (it actually makes me want to giggle but for perfomance purposes I try not to!).

What would you say to anyone thinking of joining the BGSO? Do it! No seriously... right this second... don’t put it off.... DO IT NOW! It is by far the best thing I have done for myself. My talent may not be great but working with such a fantastic group of people is an opportunity I am so glad I took advantage of. This is an orchestra like no other. Friendly, approachable, and from such a diverse range of skill levels and backgrounds but all united in our musical passion... most of all we don’t mourn our music we feel it and love it.

“After that first rehearsal I went home with such a massive grin on my face and I still leave every rehearsal feeling that way.”
