ENGLISH AND DRAMA FACULTY NEWS Report by Pauline Hageman, HT English and Drama

Congratulations to our HSC Drama and Extension 2 students who have completed and submitted their major works. Drama students were examined by external markers for group and individual performances. Extension 2 English students engaged in thorough research and extensive drafting to produce their final projects in either 6000 word print, or the equivalent in a sound, visual and digital medium of their choice. Extension 2 English is an opportunity for students to develop skills for tertiary study, to learn self-discipline and to sculpt their authorial voice. Thank you to our 2019 HSC Drama teacher, Michael Gallaway and Extension 2 English teacher, Kate Stavert for guiding their students through their creative process.

Daniel Whittemore and I attended the Creative Program launch at the Opera House last Friday night. The event was designed to provide opportunities and ideas to enrich student critical and creative thinking and exploration of a diverse world through live performance. Each year we embed into our program the opportunity for all Stages 4 and 5 students to attend a live performance and we are currently researching productions to enhance our learning programs for 2020.

Burwood girls from Years 10 and 11 supported Legacy Badge Day last Friday by volunteering to sell badges and teddy bears at Circular Quay and Burwood station. The girls had an early start and worked in pairs to collect donations for Legacy, a charity that supports families who have lost a parent in war or military service. Thank you to the fabulous Burwood girls who demonstrated our school motto: “Not for ourselves alone”, and their mentor, Janice Raynor.

GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM

The GAT team is working very hard towards the completion of their chosen tasks. Team and regular meetings confirmed a strong progress of a number of very interesting and challenging projects. Recently, students attended technical instruction lesson by Mr Kaing who outlined a number of useful techniques towards the development of students’ presentations to the class. A handout provides a summary of the important aspects of the lesson.

A number of students are finalising the creative representations of their tasks in readiness for the Program Launch on 22 October in the Library. We are very grateful to a number specialist teachers across the curriculum for their time and support, as well as advice and ongoing guidance.

CREATIVE ARTS FACULTY NEWS

Year 8 Field study to Addison Road Community Arts Centre

Year 8 students recently attended a Field Study Day at the creative confines of Addison Road Community Centre in Marrickville, where they were involved in a range of activities. Among the varied activities involving our Burwood Girls, a small group of Year 8 Music students were introduced to the production techniques utilised to produce Addison Road’s community based Radio Skid Row 88.9FM shows. The music students created a series of fun radio station ID sound tags and also performed three songs live on air including Stand by Me by Sam Cooke. Some music students were also interviewed by the residing DJs.

Students were also introduced to a children’s book entitled, “The Hollow Tree”, a story based on a hollow tree on site at Addi road, which was saved by Addison Road’s community and written by Mark Mordue, Addi’s media officer. In his story, the tree speaks to the reader of its changing life as the buildings grow higher and closer in the city. The tree shares its secrets – and how it relates to friends who live in and around it, the varying bird-life and fauna who need it to survive. Using the books ideas of ecology and hope presented in the Hollow tree book, Year 8 students produced artworks based of their personal reactions to the tree’s story.

Further exploring Addison Roads concerns with local and global environmental issues, students also participated in producing recycled cardboard bird sculptures and a large collaboratively made bird that was created from found man-made objects and scrap metals.

Recycling materials for bird sculptures at Addison Road

The drama theatre at Addi Road was yet another venue for students to explore the idea of nature’s worth to our lives. Students created spontaneous group performances based on introducing people to the wonder, respect and appreciation of nature. Their performances were captivating and inspiring. Students from Burwood Girls High School also donated tinned food to the Addi Road Community Food Pantry.

Year 8 students’ drama at Addison Road

The entire day was a great success and even a smashed rear bus window and another broken bus didn’t dampen our enthusiasm for the great, tireless work of the DJs, resident artists and drama tutors at Addison Road Community Centre that helped further ignite our students’ creativity, senses and respect for nature.

Addison Road Food Pantry Drive Visit

Report by Paige Upatising, Year 10 SRC

This year, the Year 10 SRC had the opportunity to run the Addison Road Food Pantry Drive, as a part of our initiative to raise funds for Refugee Week. The drive consisted of asking for donations; such as lentils, spices, pads and other household foods and items that would be able to suffice families of refugees who need these basic essentials to survive.

Year 10 SRC at the Addison Rd Food Pantry

A few weeks ago, Ms Yongsiri along with the Year 10 executive year leaders visited the Addison Road Food Pantry Drive in Marrickville to give in the donations and pay a visit to the food pantry. We were greeted by the owners who kindly gave us a tour of the pantry, explaining to us the history and upbringings of the place, its origins of being launched back in 2016, as well as the wonderful staff, volunteers and partner organisations that support them that make it possible for this pantry to run.

We also had the wonderful opportunity of talking to Dulce Munoz, the national organiser at Mums4Refugees, who runs the subsidiary project called Mama Penny, affiliated as a partnership with the Addison Road Food Pantry Drive. Mama Penny’s was opened up 6 months ago as a mobile food pantry, to help refugees and single mums affected by domestic violence. It offers families a box full of essentials that include fresh food, fruit, vegetables, pantry items and toiletries for the cheap and affordable price of $5. The project originally being a six-week pilot project, has been extended due to it being highly successful throughout the local community.

It was wonderful to see such passionate and kind hearted people within our community, all united for the same cause and mission of rescuing food and ending hunger. Overall it was a highly valuable experience on shining a light on important issues in Australia that are often overlooked and underrepresented. We hope to contribute to this organisation again in the future, as well as spread further awareness to our school on the issues of food security and food waste in our community.

BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD PRACTICE WALK

After a fun day of preparation on 29 August, 27 excited Year 9 students and Ms Muscat, Ms Coulson and Ms Oh set off from Hornsby station on the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh practice walk on 12 September.

Students navigated their way along part of the Great North Walk: battled leeches, rock scrambles and heavy packs carrying everything they needed for the two days. Lollies, chocolate and two minute noodles were consumed at every opportunity. Tents kept everyone cosy at night at Crosslands Reserve.

After tidying up our campsite and picking up all our rubbish we all made our way along the short, scenic but steep climb to Mount Kuringai station. Twenty-seven exhausted Year 9s and three teachers headed home to well-deserved hot showers and a rest.

HSIE FACULTY NEWS

The HSIE faculty have had a busy Term 3 with activities and outings across our Commerce, International Studies and Journalism elective classes.

Additionally, our Year 9 Geography students attended Manly Quarantine station for a fun-filled Field Study Day. Sofia-Rose Underwood, from Year 9 Journalism filed this report on the day:

Year 9 Geography Field Study Day

Report by Sofia-Rose Underwood

When we arrived at the Manly Quarantine station, we were expecting a haunted, disease-ridden building so the sparkling water, lush vegetation and inquisitive wildlife were quite the shock. However, the quarantine’s picturesque scenery was a stark contrast to its gory history, in which the excursion’s focus on life, death, sickness and health was emphasised. We discovered the atrocities committed within the centre in the name of “healing” and how treatments that seem barbaric to us today were once accepted. It really highlighted the progression of medicine over the years.

Year 9 Geography students at Manly Quarantine Station

We learnt about the most common reasons for people to undertake the potentially deadly journey to Australia and the most prevalent illnesses that plagued them. The only thing more confronting than the massive amount of people who had died within the quarantine station over the years and the horrific conditions they suffered was our tour guide informing

us that after we passed a certain point in the grounds, there was nothing we could do to prevent walking over someone’s remains.

The HSIE field study provided both an amazing opportunity and an intriguing insight into the history of both medicine and immigration to Australia.

TAS NEWS

TAS has had a great term and have come back even stronger from the unfortunate event of Room 35 burning down in the last week of Term 2. We have been very busy in all subjects, not only in class, but with all the extra activities such as catering for numerous events, Wool for School competition, Body of Works Exhibition and Work Placement to name a few.

The Major Projects for both Design and Technology and Textiles and Design are all in the process of being externally marked. I would like to thank Ms Papas and Ms Yongsiri for their immense effort during school and after school hours with these students to achieve amazing projects that extended and challenged the girls.

It is hard to believe that the HSC is just around the corner for our Year 12 students who are busily and conscientiously doing preparation for their exams. TAS wishes each and every one of them the very best not only in the HSC, but all their future endeavours. Don’t forget to come back and visit us and share your achievements and adventures with us.

Year 7 and 8 Technology are moving onto their final rotation for the year and I am looking forward to some further amazing results from our motivated innovative students. It has been great seeing some of the amazing creative work that our students have been doing. Hope that your daughters are showing you their great work. Well done to everyone on their achievements.

Year 8 – Technology ‘Kidz Café

Ms Patonay’s classes have been producing some great dishes as part of the KIDZ CAFÉ Unit. Their presentation throughout the unit has been outstanding. They should be proud of all the great garnishing and decorating that they have done as some of it is to industry standard. Well done!

On Monday both classes prepared, cooked and served up some delicious Pancake Stacks with Seasonal Fruits. There are so many beautiful spring/summer fruits that are in abundance and I hope the girls will cook up a storm for you at home as well.

A nice dusting of icing sugar (not an avalanche) makes many sweet dishes more visually appealing.

Year 9 Child Studies

During this term, students have been learning about caring for newborns. The class has been fortunate enough to have used virtual babies to assist their knowledge and enable them to have ‘hands on’ practical experience. After finally deciding on naming the baby Keisha, students have learned how to change nappies, dress and swaddle a baby ready for bedtime. They have enjoyed this unit immensely and they even take care of baby Keisha during class through regular cuddles.

Year 10 Teppanyaki experience at Hisshou Restaurant

Report by Francesca Sergi and Katerina Karagiannis

Thirty lucky Year 10 students were given the opportunity to participate in sushi making and then go out for lunch at a teppanyaki restaurant in the city.

We started the day off by learning how to make sushi from the TAS staff and all of us girls were equally split into groups with each responsible for one type of filling. After each group had finished their job by either cutting or cooking their given ingredient, we all had different variations of fillings which included; tuna, chicken, avocado, cucumber, carrot, egg, capsicum, and rice. Each one of us were now ready to start rolling up our sushi rolls. By the end of the session, we had successfully made roughly four sushi rolls per student and as a group we chose the most appealing sushi roll and presented them nicely to get a lovely group picture taken.

Year 10 students ready to try teppanyaki

Now that we had finished making our sushi, it was time to walk to the Burwood Station to catch a train to Central Station which is where teppanyaki was waiting for us. All of us girls were thrilled to experience this, even though some have been before. Teppanyaki meals feature various courses of meat, seafood, and vegetables cooked tableside by a highly skilled chef. The obvious central aspect of teppanyaki is, of course, the chef’s demonstration of cooking techniques, this includes slicing and cutting meat and seafood with precision and flame grilling beef. The little tricks he performed and of course the interactions we had with our chef was the highlight of our trip. Catching an egg in a bowl and catching a little sliced piece of omelette in our mouths!! We were lucky enough to have such an amazing chef that not only interacted with the girls but the teachers as well, which made the experience so much more exciting. Overall, we are certain that each one of us girls can say at least one positive comment on this experience, as it was a lovely day that every girl should experience at this amazing school.

Year 10 Food Technology

Year 10 Food Technology have been working on a unit called, ‘Food for Special Needs’. As their assessment task the students had to research various diseases, intolerances and allergies and then find a suitable recipe that they could prepare, cook and serve in a double lesson.

The results were fantastic and delicious as well. The buffet of these delectable delights looked as though it belonged in restaurant.

A picture says a thousand words.

Tokyo Kasei Visit – Friday 6 September The Year 10 Hospitality Class have been extremely busy.

On Friday they catered for the lunch for the Tokyo Kasei Student Visit. They did a tremendous job.

It was part of their Cluster Task Assessment where they had to prepare and serve a variety of sandwiches to industry standard in catering quantities. The students thoroughly enjoyed the whole day Thursday’s preparation and Friday’s assembling and serving of the sandwiches.

They did a wonderful job and many praises were offered by the visitors who thoroughly enjoyed the delicious sandwiches.

CONGRATULATIONS to you all on your fine efforts and you made your teacher proud.

THANK YOU to Year 9 and 10 Child Studies students and Ms Slocombe who did a terrific job setting up and serving Morning Tea and cleaning up. We truly appreciate how you live up to our school motto, ‘Not for Ourselves Alone’.

THANK YOU to Ms Milovanovic and Ms Latini who worked tirelessly for the two days.

Year 11 VET Hospitality Food and Beverage Workplacement

Our Year 11 VET Hospitality Food and Beverage students participated in their first mandatory Workplacement during Weeks 3 and 5 this term.

Workplacement provides students with first-hand experience in the industry. It is a way to improve and practise their skills and is a great way to open up career paths. It gives students the responsibilities of an employee.

This can be an initially overwhelming experience for students, as it may be the first time for most of them in a work place. However, our ‘Work Place Provider’, South Sydney Business Education Network did a wonderful job sourcing suitable host employers to give our students appropriate and interesting work placements.

I visited each of our students on site at their placements during their week and spoke to their host employers. I received excellent feedback about our students’ willingness to learn, personal presentation and positive, can do attitude. I felt the girls represented BGHS proudly.

We are very grateful to the following host employers for providing this opportunity for our students:

Amora Jamison Hotel Camy's Chargrill Chicken Cafe (Surry Hills) City Tattersalls Club Hard Rock Café Rashays - Darling Harbour Song Hotels Wentworth Avenue Sydney Hilton Vibe Hotel Goulburn Street, William Angliss Institute The Spot Cafe, Riverwood

Debbie Kiely, Hospitality Teacher

Year 12 Hospitality - VET Excellence Awards On Thursday 12 September, Southern Sydney Business Education Network hosted their annual VET Excellence Awards Breakfast at NSW Parliament House. This event is held to acknowledge the achievements of Year 12 VET students.

To be eligible, students must currently be in Year 12 and enrolled in a VET course with a mandatory work placement component.

Burwood GHS VET Hospitality Food and Beverage student Jasmine Hemady was nominated and received a VET Excellence Award as the acknowledgement of her Hospitality achievements. She was invited to attend the awards ceremony with her Hospitality teacher Ms Milovanovic.

Over the past two years of her course, Jasmine has displayed great commitment to all aspects of her study program, both during school hours and after school. She completed two very successful work placements and she always willingly gave her time to school catering activities, including running Café on Queen. She was an effective team member and also took on leadership and management roles when required. Well done Jasmine!

A BIG THANK YOU for all the help that you gave for numerous catering events since you were in Year 8. You truly are a great role model for the school motto, ‘Not for Ourselves Alone’.

Year 12 Textiles and Design

Ariel Hou Wool4School 2019 2nd Place Winner

Report by Ariel Hou, Year 12 Textiles & Design student

Wool4school is a national design competition held by the Woolmark company. The competition is aimed at high school design students and every year, students are challenged to not only learn more about wool but to design an innovative outfit using the provided stimulus. Because the competition

also focuses on wool innovation and education, 80% of the design must be composed of wool. Depending on the year students are in, prizes range from cash prizes, sewing machines, to having their garments made by an Australian designer such as Dion Lee and featured in an editorial, to a full scholarship to the prestigious Whitehouse Institute of Design.

This year, the competition focused on integrating technology into fashion design. For my submission, I designed a three-piece outfit that was targeted at the modern working women with an active lifestyle. My design included a sleeveless merino wool and lycra bodysuit, suitable for both work and swimming, with an invisible BPM heart rate monitor at the chest. A high-waisted pant that integrated wireless chargers into the pockets, and a princess line coat with solar panels at back to generate electricity for the pants in order to charge connected devices. The overarching end goal to designing these wearable tech garments was to add subtle functionality, incorporating extra storage and technology without compromising on fashion or style.

On Monday 12 August I found out I was a top ten finalist out of hundreds of entries from all over Australia, and shortly thereafter was awarded with the second place position for the Year 12 category! I am so grateful and excited to receive a summer fashion design course at Whitehouse, and a year-long subscription to Frankie Magazine. Overall, the experience was so educational, I would like to thank Ms Papas for introducing me to the competition and for her continued mentorship throughout the process. I recommend all students to get involved regardless of what year they are in, this competition is an amazing opportunity for budding designers to not only learn about all things wool, but to allow their creative minds to be seen through their fashion designs.

Our students studying Japanese in Years 10 and 11 once again welcomed a group of visiting students from Japan – this time from a large senior high school in Tokyo. Fifty-six students and 12 adults visited us on the day and they were welcomed in the Hall by Mr Kent and Ms O’Brien, with the translation assistance of our Japanese language assistant, Yuya.

The visitors enjoyed a whirlwind tour of the school, observing some classes and taking special note of all the student art works, ceramics, and displays of work that we have, which is very uncommon in Japan.

Morning tea, provided by our more than capable Hospitality team, was well received with a piece of fruit, a drink and some chocolate cake for all to enjoy.

During periods 2 and 3, we had very special Australian-themed activities for the students to take part in. They enjoyed Bush Dancing with Jan Gianotti, Contemporary Art with Mat Baldwin and Xanthe Warren, AFL with Erin Dib and some special guests from the Sydney Swans, while Rita Zammit presented some Australiana content including an introduction to Aussie culture and slang.

Lunch was by far the showstopper – a beautifully prepared and presented variety of gourmet sandwiches which was relished by our visitors and their buddies alike.

Finally, we had the farewell ceremony and we were privileged to have a presentation of Radio Exercise by Tokyo Kasei, who then got everyone involved in the very Japanese exercise tradition to work off their lunch. It was a teary farewell at the gate as the girls from Tokyo Kasei were waved off in the coaches.

CAREERS ADVISOR

A total of 18 Burwood GHS students offered university places already.

Year 12 students have already secured unconditional offers (prior to their HSC examination) in competitive university places at Macquarie (16 offers) and the Notre Dame (2 offers) universities. This is a result of successful applications in early offer schemes. These offers included Actuarial and Combined Law places. Selection was based on academic reports, as well as school and community involvement.

There will be a further round for the Macquarie University Scheme in the very near future.

Opportunities for further unconditional offers are available to Year 12 students if they apply for UAC's School Recommendation Scheme (SRS) by 30 September. Such offers are for universities such as Macquarie, Western Sydney, Newcastle as well as others. Conditional offers are also available for the University of Sydney and UTS if students can claim financial disadvantage. UNSW does not participate in SRS. Offers in the SRS scheme are based on academic results and application in Year 11. So there is additional incentive to study hard in Year 11.

Last year between 40 and 50 students received unconditional early offers for university places. If interested and needing assistance for such schemes please see the Careers Adviser promptly, as deadlines are approaching.

BEP NEWS

As Term 3 comes to a close we would like to say a huge thank you and congratulations to everyone involved in the Burwood Ensemble Program. It has been a busy and very successful term, featuring our annual Big Night Out fundraiser. This

fundraiser was a huge triumph, where we witnessed performances from our ensembles, and professional tutors came to life in a night of musical magic.

Senior Concert Band

On Sunday 8 September, program director Andy Del Riccio along with bugler Lauren Pearson and prayer reader and wreath layer Emily Vukobrat attended the unveiling of a new war memorial at Leichhardt Bus Depot.

A reminder that Senior Concert Band will be performing at the Year 12 Graduation ceremony on Wednesday 25 September. This is a very special event so please ensure everyone is here to pay tribute to those students who have been with us since the beginning. A special mention to our Year 12 students leaving us: Josephine Press, Claire Lin, Ruby McVicar and Rose Bakker – thank you for your ongoing dedication to the ensemble program, commitment and leadership. We will miss you!

Our Junior Band, Concert Band and String Orchestra will be touring the Shoalhaven area next term (Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 October). They will be visiting local schools, aged care facilities as well as performing at local venues. This is a great opportunity for the girls to come together in a fun environment and showcase their talent, we might also have time to see a whale or two when we go whale watching. We can’t wait!!!

Looking forward to a very busy and fruitful Term 4. Andy Del Riccio and Mary Bonaddio

YEAR 11 ‘LIFE READY’ PROGRAM BSTREETSMART

Report by Melissa Caltabiano, HT PDHPE and Dance

On Tuesday 10 September, Year 11 students travelled to Qudos Bank Arena to participate in the Bstreetsmart driver education and road safety excursion. Bstreetsmart is the inspiring initiative of the Trauma Service at Westmead Hospital. The purpose of Bstreetsmart is to reduce the fatality and injury rates of young people by promoting safe behaviour as drivers, riders and passengers. The program consisted of a crash scene investigation involving trauma doctors, Police, Ambulance and the Fire Brigade.

Students then had the opportunity to visit a large range of interactive displays from a range of stakeholders such as the Centre for Road Safety, Transport NSW, L Trent Driving School, Brain Injury and Wheelchair Sports. The day concluded with a variety of personal stories shared by people who have survived serious car crashes and a stopping distance demonstration. Year 11 found this excursion

extremely moving and informative. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and promised to stay safe on the roads.

FUTURES LEARNING

It has been a busy year for the Futures Learning classes - so exciting to see the students flourish in a variety of different projects.

In Term 1, the Year 10 students identified hot classrooms as an issue, and wanted to do something about it! They were an integral part of our school’s application for the governments Cooler Classrooms grants. We are still awaiting an outcome of the application, but hoping all their research, data collection and time spent collating the supporting documentation has a positive outcome!

In Term 2, both classes started working towards creating short films for the national competition established by High Resolves, ‘Videos for Change’. The students chose various social issues they were passionate about and set to creating their films. Whilst working on these, the Year 10 class reached out to Dignity, a not for profit organisation that helps to support those at risk of, or experiencing homelessness. Dignity were kind enough to come out to the school to educate the class about the issue of homelessness, as well as donating a copy of their book, “Hands of Homelessness” to the school. After this visit, the girls were inspired to go one step further and organise a Day for Dignity to raise funds, awareness and resources for Dignity. Stay tuned for details and visit https://dignity.org.au to find out more about this wonderful organisation.

Alongside this, the students made connections with teachers from Croydon Public School at one of the Learning Advisory Board events they attended. From this connection, the students were invited to organise and facilitate a “Futures Learning Workshop” for the Year 6 students at Croydon PS.

So on Friday 9 August, we walked down to Croydon PS to introduce them to what the subject is and facilitate some fun activities that we have done in our classes. From this, our Futures Learning students also agreed they would like to keep refining the workshop and run it in other local primary schools around the area too.

The feedback from the Year 6 students at Croydon PS was overwhelmingly positive, and we are looking to further grow our connections with them through a peer mentoring program next term.

Engaging the CPS students in Futures Learning activities

Finally, speaking of mentoring, this term the Year 9 class has been lucky enough to participate in the MIRVAC’s Giant Goals – Women in Leadership mentoring program. This experience is providing the students with a unique learning environment, as students undertake 6 Sessions exploring the leadership, goal setting and career options relating to STEM.

The Program aims to: Enhance positive self-esteem and resilience in students Provide a variety of life experiences and encourage goal

setting behaviours Equip students with key career strategies Expose students to healthy and career focused female

role models Hands on social, personal and vocational skills to help

students stay engaged in STEM subjects and career paths Personal and career growth opportunities

So far the students have met with mentors from the GWS Giants and MIRVAC who are supporting them with their work on a property based project. And in true BGHS fashion, one of the MIRVAC employees is even a BGHS alumni from the class of 2005. This program culminates in the students presenting at a symposium at MIRVAC head office on October 16, so we look forward to seeing how they go!

Winter Warrior

A month ago, 42 Year 9 and 10 PASS students were fortunate enough to go on a 3day camp to Lake Keepit to compete in this year’s Winter Warrior. The event consisted of a 5km run, 2km log carry and an 8km obstacle course which each member of the team needed to complete. All of our seven teams successfully made it across the finish line and even though they were all covered in mud, they each showed tremendous persistence, teamwork and resilience throughout the race.

They represented Burwood GHS very well and I could not have been prouder of all their achievements. We also had a group of students who helped out behind the scenes, making sure there was enough water at the water stations and encouraging teammates along the way. The girls were lucky

enough to bring home first place in the female division, won by one of the Year 10 teams! The Teletubbies team also won best costume.

“It was a really fun experience getting too race with your friends and dressing up for the event. We also got to meet other students from the different schools involved.” – Eden Sheridan

Ms Gianotti and I were very impressed with the level of effort, the excellent behaviour and the positive attitude that was demonstrated over the three days. It was a fantastic camp and we are looking forward to next year.

DANCE NEWS

What a busy few months in Dance! Since the last Event our dancers have been busy. At the

end of June, Dance Company and Dance Ensemble both represented the school at In the Spotlight Dance Festival at the Seymour Centre. This is a huge event with high standards, spanning over two weeks and 200 items from across Sydney, so we were very lucky to be included in this program.

Also representing Burwood GHS at this festival in external groups were Greta Anfuso (9) and Alexandra Lusty (9) in the State Dance Ensemble.

Lucinda Nube (11), Olivia Chew (11) and Nandni Narwania (9) also showed such care and compassion for the Shining Stars Dance Ensemble that they worked with during rehearsals and supported on stage at the festival. I was lucky enough to be the choreographer for this ensemble, and these students were invaluable in providing such a positive experience for this group of students with a disability.

The Jazz, Musical Theatre and Hip Hop Ensembles rocked iLumin8 on July 2 with their outdoor performances. The audience enjoyed these upbeat dances and it was great to get a sneak peak of these performances before seeing them on stage at the Dance Showcase on September 4!

Also, a huge congratulations to the Year 12 Dance class (Erin Sotiriou, Mia Marie-Spano, Shannon Lai, Alexandra Giakoumatos) for completing the practical component of their HSC Dance Examinations on Monday 12 August. Thank you to their Core Composition dancers Emi Davies-Barnier, Greta Anfuso and Rachael Adair Connolly for all your hard work and performances too, they could not have done it without you! You all did a fabulous job and should be very proud of your efforts.

HSC Dance Class of 2019

On September 4, our annual Dance Showcase was a huge success. Our matinee show had an audience of over 500 students including our Year 7 & 8 students, as well as guests from Ashfield PS, Burwood PS, Lucas Gardens and Chalmers Road Schools. This year we trialled round table seating, for families and staff, in addition to the usual seating. These dinner tables were a hit, so stay tuned for next year’s ideas! The audience seemed to love the variety of talent and styles on display, and each and every performer should be so pleased with their efforts. We also said farewell to our Year 12 dance students, as well as Joyce Li and Cleo Bur who performed in their final Dance Showcase at Burwood GHS. Congratulations girls, you’ll be missed!

Next term we look forward to seeing what our Burwood GHS dancers perform in the Schools Spectacular combined dance ensemble, and we wish Greta Anfuso and Rachael Adair Connolly the best of luck with their roles in the featured Hip Hop and Ballet Ensembles respectively.

Opens Grade Football

The Burwood Girls Opens Grade Football team played the Grand final against Hunter Hills School on Tuesday 10 September. It was a very close and challenging game. The first half remained at a 0-0 score. Unfortunately in the second half Hunters Hill managed to combine their passes and lay off to some key players who successfully scored 2 goals in the last 5 minutes. We are very proud of the efforts of all players in the team. A big congratulations for reaching the finals and although we were unable to secure a win, the season has bought some life lessons, team work and memorable experiences. A fantastic effort by all team members.

Opens Grade Volleyball

Last Tuesday, the Opens Volleyball side competed in the Grand Final against Ryde Secondary College. After a very strong semi-final win, the team went into the Grand Final with some confidence. Despite the fact that our opponents had not lost a match and made it to the last 16 of the Combined High Schools competition, we thought we had a chance.

We were beaten 2 games to nil, however, the team put in a spirited effort and can be proud of their achievements this year. Well done girls!!
