AOIFE HENCHY, Sr.#7 ForwardCAPTAIN
My lungs felt like they were about to burst as I finished my last lap
around the soccer field. Heat waves rose off the synthetic turf;
the sun beat down on my flushed face. The French toast I ate for breakfast
clumped in my throat. “Ten more push-ups, then jump-roping,” my coach said.
“I want my captain to be the fittest player come September.” But physical fitness wouldn’t prepare me for the kind of captain I would have to be.
Three days later, my glutes, abs and biceps still ached. My coach and I agreed I would train throughout the summer, first by boxing with his trainer, Rodney the Assassin. After 90 minutes with Rodney, I could barely move. Sweat darkened and weighed down my t-shirt. It seeped out of pores I didn’t even realize were capable of producing perspiration.
Three weeks later, I continued to sweat while running 2.5 miles through hilly, Umbrian terrain. At the beginning, I couldn’t run the whole distance: my calves burned and I lost my breath. But by my last week in Italy, I ran without stopping. From there, I traveled to England to attend Manchester United Soccer Schools, where I played hard for two weeks. When I joined my teammates at preseason camp, my coach said, “You’re definitely more built up, Aoif ’.” I felt ready to lead my team to the State Championships.
But a week later, my eyes swelled, my sinuses ached, and I felt fatigued. My temperature reached 102 degrees. Because the idea of food repulsed me, I lost weight. Increasingly concerned, my mother took me to the hospital. When I first found out that I had mononucleosis and couldn’t start school, I wanted to scream out in rage. “I need to break the assist record and become the second highest goalscorer in Brooklyn Friends’ history!”
The first game was that Friday and my doctor let me attend it. That morning, I felt a strange numbness on the right side of my lips. At the game, the novacaine-like sensation traveled up my face and my eyelid twitched. I couldn’t smile and my speech was slurred. Panicking, my mom, afraid I was having a stroke, drove me to the hospital. My doctor told us that I had Bell’s Palsy, an immune reaction to the mono. There was a 90 percent chance that the paralysis it caused would be temporary…
From the hospital we went to pick up steroids that would arrest the Bell’s Palsy and strengthen my face. The pharmacist looked like Omar Shariff: his eyes were shockingly green and his hair shone black in the fluorescent light. Noting our distress, he filled the prescription within minutes.
For ten nights, the steroids kept me awake. My heart beat in my head, throat, and fingertips, making me feel like running, but I couldn’t exercise or move my face normally.
Watching my team play was difficult. I didn’t participate in half-time talks or pre-game speeches until my coach sat me down at Starbucks. “You can go two ways, Aoife,” he said. “You can give in and let this sickness defeat you or you can take this opportunity to lead the team in a different way.”
That’s when I realized that I had to get into a new kind of shape and “be more present,” as my coach put it, not just for myself but for my teammates. When I was a freshmen and upperclassmen cheered for me, they boosted my confidence. Now I could give my team similar support.
Captaining from the sidelines, I have a wider view of the field and can shout “man on!” when an opponent approaches, to alert my teammates to scoring opportunities. As I recover from mono, I continue to work side-by-side with my coach and cheer my team on. It turns out that being fit to captain requires more than sprints, push-ups and jump-roping.
