MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

As we make our way through the musical season, I am always struck bythe huge diversity in programs the WSO provides for the community.

In this upcoming series of concerts we move through Strauss’ gloriousFour Last Songs with soprano Joni Henson, to the full symphonicsplendour of Bruckner’s Symphony No.4 in E-flat major (Romantic). This isa concert to satisfy the hearts of the most dedicated lovers of symphonicmusic, or for those that have an interest in the ultimate symphonicexperience where the full orchestra is put through the most demandingof technical and expressive repertoire. As audience members, we can

immerse ourselves in the rich glory of the music.You cannot help but be deeply moved byexperiencing this music live.

Then we move to a wonderful exploration of great music developed by the Chicago SymphonyOrchestra’s Beyond the Score® series. This year’s presentation features Edward Elgar’s much lovedEnigma Variations. The work is based on musical sketches of fourteen people in the composer’s life,and the wonderful material and research provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra providesexceptional clarity and insight that adds immensely to the experience of the music.

We continue our partnership with the Philharmonic Choir in a performance of Mendelssohn’sLobgesang, and then we explore the musical genius of Rufus Wainwright. This is a marvellousopportunity to experience the great musical talent and extraordinary song writing that RufusWainwright brings to our stage. We move then to a world premiere of Larysa Kuzmenko’s GoldenHarvest, an oratorio honouring the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. We welcomeAndriana Chuchman, Manitoba’s globe-trotting opera star, back to her home orchestra, and alsofeature the ever popular Carmina Burana.

We end this portion of the season with a delightful concert for children. It is indeed a journey ofmusical discovery to move through the year with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

During this year’s New Music Festival, I read a comment somewhere (I cannot remember the locationor source) that “art decorates space, and music decorates time.”While I don’t think that “decorate” isquite the right word, I love the idea that through music, we are able to add colour, dimension, passion,and joy to the seconds, minutes, and hours of our lives. The WSO is pleased to provide theseexceptional musical moments to add beauty to your life.

Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director

German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid,richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly),“fearless” approach and “first-ratetechnique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinarycommand over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion,profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” inBruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011).

Following on from his tenure as assistant conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, whichhe completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was associate conductor of the Los AngelesPhilharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his tenth seasonas music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developedthe orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programminginitiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen toperform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creativeand innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the only Canadianensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival andIndigenous Festival, Alexander led the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to theNational Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting masterclasses, the NewMusic Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of theCentennial Concert Hall.

Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor

Julian Pellicano’s voracious musical appetite makes him a formidable interpreterof the symphonic repertoire. He is currently resident conductor of the WinnipegSymphony Orchestra, Artist-in-Residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music festival,and music director of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. Pellicanohas built his career by following an unconventional path. The creation, with Dr. Paul Lehrman, of a new performance edition of George Antheil's Ballet Mecaniquefirst brought Pellicano to the public’s attention. From 2009 to 2013 he served as

music director of the Longy School of Music Conservatory Orchestra where he established a rigorousand distinctive new orchestral program. Pellicano has conducted the Orquestra Sinfonica de PortoAlegre (Brazil), Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony,The Kallisti Ensemble, Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble and Milwaukee's Present Music. He hasworked in masterclasses with Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Zsolt Nagy, Martyn Brabbins, and Carl St. Clair.As a young musician he played drums, percussion, organ, and accordion in rock, blues and jazzgroups. An autodidact, he was accepted to the Peabody Conservatory as a percussionist without anyformal training. He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music(Stockholm), and the Yale School of Music where he was awarded the 2008 Presser Music Award andthe Philip F. Nelson Award. He premiered Martin Bresnick’s critically acclaimed opera My Friend's Storyat the International Festival of Arts and Ideas and conducted at Carnegie Hall with the YalePhilharmonia Orchestra.

The bombing ofDresden and the lossof many friendsweighed heavily onRichard Strauss duringthe war, even though

he was shielded from its ravages athis villa in the Bavarian Alps where hehad been living since 1935. Fearingthe Denazification hearings thatbegan in October 1945, Strauss andhis wife Pauline decided to move toSwitzerland where they remained forthe next four years. Officiallyexonerated in June 1948, theincreasingly frail composer stayed inSwitzerland for medical treatmentand returned to Bavaria in May 1949.His Four Last Songs date from thisperiod that also included his OboeConcerto and Duet Concertino forclarinet, bassoon and strings.

The aging Strauss occupied his timein Switzerland reading Goethe,studying his score of Wagner’sTristan und Isolde and reflecting onhis long life as a guardian of GermanRomantic musical tradition andnever apologized that he always hadone foot in the previous century as aconsistent traditionalist opposed tomodernism, though with enoughdecorous irony to underscore hisown time.

Strauss had read Eichendorff’s poemIm Abendrot in 1946, in which anaging couple reflects on the lifetimethey’ve spent together, viewing thesetting sun and asking “Could this

perchance be death?”Soon after, Straussread a collection of poems by HermannHesse and decided to make a five-songsetting for soprano and orchestraconcluding with the Eichendorff poemwhich he had set in May 1948.Completing the entire set by Septemberless one Hesse song that was neverfinished, Four Last Songs became Strauss’final work.

The Four Last Songs metaphorically reflecton death, looking back and ahead,worldly and wise rather than angry orfearful. As Wagner famously did, theorchestra is integral to the narratives, thehorn in particular (Strauss’ father Franzhad been a professional horn player) andthe beauty of the soprano voice wasclearly uppermost in Strauss’ thoughts.With universal rather than autobiographicalmessages and without any suggestion ofreligious consolation, Strauss offers aglowing valedictory in a musicallandscape he had loved throughout hisentire composing life.

The music of AntonBruckner is unique,and inexorablybonded to both itscreator and his own

Creator. Descended from generations ofCatholic peasants, Bruckner lived in aseemingly religious ecstasy, sparinghimself as he could from the necessitiesof everyday life with a guileless humilityand in constant fear that God mightcondemn him for not using his time andtalent to his fullest capacity.Wagneradored the simplicity of thisextraordinary man, and Brucknerreturned the favour with Wagnerbecoming his musical mentor.

It took Bruckner 14 years to create theFourth Symphony. Endless revisions,trials, tribulations and insecurities

blanketed additions, deletions,orchestrations and responses beforethe work was premiered. BeganJanuary 2, 1874, just two days afterfinishing his Third Symphony, theVienna Philharmonic read throughthe score a year later and deemedonly the first movement fit forpublic performance, the rest“idiotic.”Deeply hurt yet busyenough with his teaching and organperforming commitments, Brucknerwaited until 1878 to persevere withthe Fourth, completing it over atwo-year period to largely the formthat it is today.

When conductor Hans Richteraccepted the Fourth forperformance, Bruckner at 57 years ofage still hadn’t had a major successas a composer, so he followed therehearsals for the premiere withnervousness and hope for atriumph. At the end of the rehearsalthe sheepish composer pressed acoin into Richter’s hand and toldhim to buy a beer “to my health.”

The premiere on February 20, 1881was an immediate success. Brucknerwas called to the stage after everymovement and the Scherzo had tobe encored. For the first time in 25years in Vienna, Bruckner wasreceiving his due. Richter wore thecoin on his watch chain for the restof his life as a memento of therehearsal – “of a day when I wept,”he said.

The Fourth Symphony is amongBruckner’s most fervently arguedworks, in both spirit andconstruction. As always in his music,one senses the “cathedral in sound”as popularly ascribed.Time, space,the long controlled climaxes,repetitions and occasional yetendearing stammering produce amatchless bonding of grandeur ofexpression to simplicity of outline.Those who take Bruckner on hisown terms receive a special hour ofa purity of discourse achieved byfew others in the history of music.

Proud of her prairie roots, Donna receivedher early training in Winnipeg and earned aBachelor of Music in Vocal Performancefrom the University of Manitoba, a diplomain Music Theatre from The Banff Centre forthe Arts, and a Master of Music in VocalPerformance from The University of Toronto.She has performed with the WinnipegSymphony, the Florida Orchestra, theCalgary Philharmonic Orchestra and wasfeatured on the CBC Radio’s SaturdayAfternoon at the Opera. Madeline Hildebrand, pianoMadeline’s passion for pianomusic recently culminated ina Master of Piano Performancefrom UBC under the tutelageof distinguished Canadianpianist, Jane Coop. Previously

she earned a performance degree withJudy Kehler Siebert at University ofManitoba, where she received theMillennium Scholarship. The opportunitiesafforded her have been many andexhilarating, including the prestigious DorisMcLellan first prize for solo performancewith the WSO in 2012. Madeline has beenawarded scholarships to study with suchluminaries as André Laplante, John Perry

James Manishen, narratorJames Manishen is alongstanding figure inManitoba's musiccommunity. He joined theWSO as a clarinetist in 1966and holds a Master of Music

degree from the Manhattan School ofMusic in New York City. He was the classicalmusic columnist for the Winnipeg FreePress and CBC broadcaster; hosting hisown national radio show and appearing onmany other music shows as host, writer,and commentator. As a writer, he has beenpublished in every major Canadian musicjournal plus international journalsGramophone, Stereo Review and others. Asan adjudicator, he has judged the CanadianMusic Competitions, the JUNO awards andmany others.

Rufus Wainwright, singer-songwriterRufus Wainwright, one of

the great male vocalists,

songwriters and

composers of his

generation, has released

seven studio albums,

three DVDs, and three

live albums. He has collaborated with artists

ranging from Elton John, David Byrne, Mark

Ronson, Joni Mitchell to Burt Bacharach.

His acclaimed first opera, Prima Donna,

premiered at the Manchester International

Festival in July 2009 and has since been

presented in London, Toronto and BAM in New

York. In 2010, Wainwright was commissioned

by the San Francisco Symphony to compose

and interpret “Five Shakespeare Sonnets,” a

five-movement song cycle that sets

Shakespeare’s “Sonnets” to orchestra and voice.

Last Fall saw the Deutsche Grammophon release

of a double CD/vinyl recording of Prima Donna

with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Deutsche

Grammophon will also be releasing an album

of Shakespeare Sonnets set to Rufus’ music in

Spring 2016 in celebration of the 400th

Anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

The oratorioGoldenHarvest(“ZolotyZhnyva”/ “Lamoissondorée”)

chronicles the journey of one family,symbolic of all Ukrainian pioneers, whomade the difficult decision to leavebehind all that was familiar and dear tothem in order to build a better life inCanada. Between 1891 and 1914,approximately 200,000 Ukrainians madethe similar decision to flee poverty,military conscription, and cultural andreligious discrimination in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which then occupiedwestern Ukraine.

Following the completion of theCanadian Pacific Railroad, Sir CliffordSifton, the minister responsible forimmigration under the government ofSir Wilfred Laurier, looked to Ukraine forpeasant farmers to open the Prairies.European shipping companies whobrought over Ukrainian immigrantsreceived payment from the Canadiangovernment. As a result, thesecompanies tried to get as manyimmigrants as possible onto Canadian-bound ships.They presented anidealized version of life in Canadathrough leaflets, newspaperadvertisements, and a network ofagents going from village to village,often disguised as peddlers. SinceUkrainian has no word for “homestead,”advertisements for immigrantstranslated this word loosely as “farm,”and many settlers came to Canadathinking that they would have a ready-built home on arrival.

Having spent all of their money on thevoyage, they arrived in shock on thePrairies to find that they had to build ashelter in the wilderness. Efforts to

inform Ukrainians about the trueconditions of life in the Prairies werehampered by the fact that encouragingemigration was prohibited by law in theAustro-Hungarian Empire.

Once in Canada, Ukrainian pioneersfaced hardships ranging from diseaseand starvation on their homesteads toxenophobia.This xenophobiaculminated in the internment of over8,000 Ukrainians from 1914 to 1920 inforced labour camps, and theregistration of over 80,000 others (themajority of whom were Ukrainians) as“enemy aliens”who had to carry identitypapers with them and report to thepolice on a regular basis. Despite thisdiscrimination, thousands of Ukrainiansstill volunteered to serve in Canada’sarmed forces during the First World War,including Filip Konowal, who wasawarded the Victoria Cross for hisbravery.

The oratorio chronicles these hardshipsand achievements in three archetypalmoments, which reflect the universalexperience of all immigrants coming toCanada: their journey, their struggle, andfinally their settlement in their new land.The piece culminates in a celebration ofthe “Golden Harvest”Ukrainians broughtto Canada: a harvest of precious wheatand uncountable cultural wealth.

The texts of Orff’s wildlyenergetic and enormouslypopular Carmina Buranacame from the discoveryin 1803 of a 13th-centurycodex among the

holdings of the abbey of Benediktbeuren,in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps.Some 200 secular poems satirizing the

church and its morals in favourof the lustiness of everyday lifewere found.Written by a bandof presumed ecclesiastics, thepoems depicted a vivid if likelyliterary view of medieval life setin an amorphous language withsome primitive notationindicating that some were sung.Under the title of CarminaBurana (“Songs of Beuren”), thepoems were published in 1847by Johann Andreas Schmeller.

When Orff discovered the lyricsin the 1930s he immediatelysaw its theatrical potential,originally figuring on aspectacle for the stage but withcostumes sets and scenerystripped away. Philosophically,Orff wanted to fuse the intellectwith the primal creative spirit ofthe poems, establishing atension in the story to be feltthrough structural simplicity,primitive rhythmic energy andimmediately impactful melody.Orff’s idea was to draw listenersto their instinctual awareness of“oneness with the universe.”Theexperience was to be viscerallyfelt, without any traces ofRomantic symphonic argumentor rich orchestral timbre.

Whether a Medieval play onmorals, a set of risqué songs, aphilosophical statement or ablending of all of these, CarminaBurana is immensely entertaining.As the poems had no knownassociating music, Orff’s settingsof the 24 he chose are alloriginal.

The work has a prologue and anepilogue that flank three largesections.While these sectionsproclaim the libidinous songs oflusty life, the prologue andepilogue (containing the samemusic) warn against indulgentliving, the chorus standing asthe bond to eternal morality atthe outset and the close. As thewheel of fate turns (“FortunaImperatrix Mundi”), so too can itgrind sensual pleasure to dust.

Larysa Kuzmanko, composerLarysa Kuzmenko is a Toronto-based composer, pianist, andJUNO nominee. Her works havebeen published by Boosey andHawkes, commissioned,performed, broadcast and

recorded by many outstanding musicians allover the world. Some prominent ensemble andsoloists who have performed her worksinclude: the Toronto Symphony Orchestra,directed by Peter Oundjian and Jukka-PekkaSaraste; the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra,directed by Bramwell Tovey; Thunder BaySymphony Orchestra, directed by JeffreyMoule; the Gryphon Trio; the Composer’sOrchestra, directed by Gary Kulesha; pianistsAnton Kuerti and Christina Petrowska-Quilico;cellist Shauna Rolston and the New HampshirePhilharmonic, directed by Mark Latham. Herworks demonstrate a strong affinity towardsthe mainstream of classical music. She imbuesher music with a strong melodic sense, and afirm rooting in traditional, albeit extendedtonal processes. She is currently on staff at theUniversity of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, whereshe teaches piano and composition.

Talia Zajac, librettistTalia Zajac is currentlycompleting her PhD in medievalhistory at the University ofToronto. Her poetry hasappeared in a number ofCanadian magazines, including

Audeamus, Contemporary Verse 2, The TorontoQuarterly, the Hart House Review, MisunderstandingsMagazine, Carousel, and NoD Magazine. In 2010her story Dinner at the Sandstone Hotel wasfeatured in an anthology of works by youngwriters, Writing Without Direction: Ten and a HalfShort Stories by Canadian Authors Under Thirty(Clark-Nova Books). Driven by constantcuriosity and a sense of wonder, writing hasbeen her life-long passion.

Talia Zajac would like to dedicate theseperformances to the memory of hergrandparents: Ludmilla and Evhen Makaryk,and Volodymyr and Melania Zajac.

Andriana Chuchman, sopranoThis season, soprano AndrianaChuchman makes her debutsat the Los Angeles Opera asLauretta in Gianni Schicchi andthe Dallas Opera as Magnoliain Show Boat, and returns to

the Manitoba Opera as Susanna in Le nozze diFigaro. She also sings Handel's Messiah withthe Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Orff'sCarmina Burana and the world premiere ofLarysa Kuzmenko's Golden Harvest with theWinnipeg Symphony, and appears in recitalin Toronto.

In concert, Ms. Chuchman has appeared withthe Detroit Symphony Orchestra inperformances of the Brahms Requiem, theRhode Island Philharmonic in Orff's CarminaBurana, the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestrain Mahler's Symphony No. 4, the RaviniaFestival as a guest on the Prairie HomeCompanion radio show, and with theInternational Music Foundation of Chicago inperformances of Handel’s Messiah.

In her native Canada, Ms. Chuchman recentlymade her debut at the Canadian OperaCompany as Olympia in Les Contesd’Hoffmann. She has also appeared at theEdmonton Opera as Yum-Yum and Marie inLa Fille du Regiment, and at the ManitobaOpera as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. culture and has developed a passion foropera, oratorio and art song during histime at both the Canadian MennoniteUniversity and The University of Manitoba.His performance highlights includesinging as a soloist with the WinnipegSymphony Orchestra last year in their 2014Holiday Express Tour throughout SouthernManitoba, performing Handel’s Messiahand Bach’s St. Matthew Passion withCanzona, and performing in the Universityof Manitoba School Tour of The BrothersGrimm. He is also looking forward to hisfourth year performance recital thiscoming April. Adam is incredibly gratefulfor his experiences thus far, and is excitedto perform with the WSO, again.

Following that auspiciousbeginning, it twice appeared at theInternational Choral Festival in Toronto withthe TSO: in 1989 with Beethoven’s MissaSolemnis (Robert Shaw) and in 1993 withBritten’s War Requiem (Bramwell Tovey).Together with the WSO, the choir hasperformed a great variety of worksincluding those of Mahler, Handel, Bach,Dvorák, Beethoven, Schoenberg, Arvo Pärt,and Valentin Silvestrov.

MFC has sung under the distinguishedleadership of WSO music directors BramwellTovey, Andrey Boreyko and AlexanderMickelthwate, as well as guest conductorssuch as Helmut Rilling, Ivars Taurins andJane Glover.

MFC is a highly select core of choristersfrom Winnipeg and surroundingcommunities, many of whom are regularmembers of other choirs, includingnumerous alumni and present students ofthe Canadian Mennonite University.

The Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg is proud to announce the 2016 semi-finalists in theWMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Coded entry MP3s were adjudicated

online by six professional musicians, and the following 12 semi-finalists (in alphabetical order) were chosen to audition:

The competition is open to advanced Manitoba musicians pursuing performance careers in all disciplines including voice.It offers a unique rehearsal and performance opportunity with the WSO for emerging classical musicians, as well as a

substantial financial award.

Semi-final auditions take place on Saturday March 26, 2016, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, in the Muriel Richardson Auditorium of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Admission: $10 at the door (no admission during an audition).

Final Competition Concert with the WSO and the Award Ceremony will take place Friday, April 22, 2016, 7:30 pm at Jubilee Place Auditorium. The three finalists will appear in performance with the WSO, and will be ranked by another

set of adjudicators. A thrilling finish to a great competition!
