OKLAHOMA FLOWER POWER!
Our Medicare Improvements for Patients and Physicians Act (MIPPA) staff conducts
Public and Media (PAM) events to share MIPPA information and identify possible
Low Income Subsidy (LIS) or Medical Savings Plan (MSP) eligible clients. These
events may be in-person interactive presentations to the public or a booth/exhibit
at a fair, conference, or other public event.
At each event, we take a vase of fresh flowers. To participate in the drawing for the
flowers, each participant must sign up with name and telephone number. One
participant goes home with beautiful fresh flowers.
Each participant is then called within two weeks. By that time she may:
*want to sign up for MIPPA because she did not want to divulge her eligibility at
the event;
*know of someone else (a neighbor, a church friend or a relative) that may need
the MIPPA services; or
*identify a potential PAM group that could use the MIPPA presentation.
Using the Fresh Flowers method, we have successfully identified at least two or
three additional (LIS and MSP) clients per PAM event. We also have some
wonderful stories about the participants and their flowers. For example:
One gentleman has a wife who has a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. He won the
bouquet of roses and took them home to his wife. He was called a few days
later and he reported that the roses were so pretty and his wife was still
enjoying them.
At a senior housing event, the presenter took a bouquet of seven tulips. Only
2 attended so they decided to split them. As the presenter collected her
materials and was leaving, she noticed that one of the tulips was left by the
participants on the desk of the Senior Manager.
The fresh flowers make such a hit and help the participants enjoy their day.
