We need your help.” Dr. Frances Gipson, the District’s Chief Academic Officer, welcomed the students with a message about the importance of planning and collaboraFng to find effecFve soluFons. “Today you will be tasked with drawing inspiraFon from others and following the trails they have laid out to move forward finding soluFons to problems that nobody has yet imagined,” she told the students. Thekick-offgotunderwayasMs.GuinyardintroducedthefivecommunityleaderswhooutlinedthekindsofcomplexproblemsaffecFngcommuniFesacrossSouthernCalifornia:BethSFcklerfromMoveL.A.CornelHunter,anexpertonmortgagebankingfromWellsFargo,Dr.JudyChiassonandHollyPriebe-SotelofromLAUSD’sOfficeofHumanRelaFons,DiversityandEquity,Dr.LoriVollandt,administratorofLAUSD’sHealthEducaFonprogram,andFranLepidesandMarshaSchwartsfromtheLeagueofWomenvoters

Throughouttheday,studentsweregivenFmetodiscusswhattheyhadheardandtoformulatequesFonsforthechallengers.Allfive-topicareasgeneratedheavyinterestfromthestudentswhoaskedalotofquesFonstothepresenters.RoundingouttheeventweresessionsoneffecFvecollaboraFoninresolvingchallengesandprovidingengagingandmeaningfulpresentaFonsoftheirown.

KathyGonnella,BeyondtheBellBranchEnrichmentProgramsAdministrator,congratulatedthestudentsontheircommitmenttosolvingproblemsintheircommuniFes.“BecauseyouarewillingtogiveupyourFmeandenergyinaddiFontoeverythingyouhavegoingoninschoolandyourlives,youaretrulyremarkablestudents,”shesaid.“Welookforwardtowhatyouwillaccomplishinthenextsevenweeks.”

Eachteamconsistsofeightstudentsandateachercoachfromtheirhighschool.Thisyear’sparFcipantsare:ArletaHS,CrenshawHS,OrthopedicMedicalMagnetHS,ResedaHS,HarborTeacherPreparatoryAcademy,FultonCollegePreparatorySchool,RanchoDominguezPreparatorySchool,CesarEChavezTeacherPrepAcademyandTaeCharterHS.ThestudentswillcomebacktogetheronMarch12topresenttheirsoluFonstothechallenges.

Awinningteamwillbeselectedbyapanelofjudges,andwillhavetheopportunitytorepresenttheDistrictinleadershipacFviFesaroundSouthernCalifornia.

TheLosAngelesUnifiedSchoolDistrict“AllDistrictHonorMarchingBand”hadanothergreatseason.ThestudentsandstaffofthebandconFnuetoleavecrowdsinaweoftheirbigsoundandhighsteppingenergy.

TheoriginalconceptofthebandwastobringtogethertalentedstudentsfromallhighschoolsintheLAUSDandtogivethemtheopportunitytomarchintheoldestandgrandestparadeinthecountry-theRoseParade.Thebandwasdesignedtoincludeonlybrassandpercussioninstrumentstocreateaunique,powerfulandcelebratorysoundunlikeotherbandsintheparade.Thismodelhasproventobeverysuccessfulforothereventsinwinteraswell.

TheAllDistrictBandisclassifiedbytheTournamentofRosesAssociaFonasan“Honor”bandbecauseitisoneoffourbandsthatmarchesintheRoseParadeeveryyear.Theother3bandsare:theU.S.MarineCorps,theSalvaFonArmy,andPasadenaCityCollege.

TheAllDistrictBandhasalsoperformedforthefiehconsecuFveyearintheannualMarFnLutherKingJr.DayParade.ThisyeartheywerejoinedbyLAUSDSuperintendentMichelleKing;BeyondtheBell,ExecuFveDirectorAlvaroCortes;LosAngelesMayor,EricGarceiandotherdignitaries.

TheAllDistrictBandpridesitselfinitsrepresentaFonoftheDistrictandforplayingmusicforthediversecrowdthatwatchestheparadefromthestreetandathomeontelevision.

SomeoftheselecFonsplayedbythebandincluded:“Ain’tNoMountainHighEnough”byMarvinGayeandTammyTerrell;“ComeOutandDancewithMe”and“DragMeDown”byOneDirecFonwerethehighlightsaswellasitsuniquearrangementof“PatrioFcMedleys”and“SpanishSkies.”

ThebandisunderthedirecFonofMusicandEntertainmenteducaFoncoordinator,TonyWhite,alongwithassociatedirectors:ArtDuardo,DarnellaDavidson,RamonMendez,VickyLopez,VeronicaGonzalez,WilberIbarra,DeiryBeasandArielLegaspi.AssistantdirectorsincludeErickQuintanilla,BladimirCastro,supportedbyassistantsCindyFrias,ScokMarFn,JenniferEscoto,ErnieSandovalJavierArroyo,KevinCisnerosMarvinLemusandRobertMuz.

OnJanuary6that6:00a.m.,onadark,cold,andwindymorning,BeyondtheBell(BTB)staffbeganpreparingfortherelocaFonofhundredsofstudentsfromPorterRanchCommunitySchoolandCastlebayLaneCharter.RespondingtodirecFongivenbytheLosAngelesUnifiedSchoolBoardofEducaFon,BTBtookacFontoplanandsupportthetemporarymoveofthetwoschoolsbecauseofanaturalgasleakdiscoveredinnearbyAlisoCanyoninlateOctober2015.

The770studentsingradesK-5atCastlebayLaneESwererelocatedtoSunnyBraeAvenueElementaryinWinnetkawhilethe1,100K-8studentsatPorterRanchCommunitySchoolwererelocatedtoNorthridgeMiddleSchool.BeyondtheBellassumedtheresponsibilityofprovidingawelcomingenvironmentatthehostschools

andinsFtuFngasafeandstructuredplanfortransporFngstudentsdailybybusfromthetwoPorterRanchschoolcampusestothenew,temporarysites.TherelocaFon,whichwillbeineffectfortherestofthe2015-2016schoolyear,hasbeensupportedbyBTB’sstrongpreparaFonandorganizaFon.Beginningwiththemorningpick-upateachhomeschoolsite,BTBemployeesprovideavaletservicetoassiststudentsastheirparentsdropthemoff.

BeyondtheBellstaffsupervisethestudentsandescortthemtowaiFngschoolbuseswherestudentakendanceistakenbeforethebussesleave.AkendanceistakenagainaeerschoolattherelocaFonsitesbyaBeyondtheBellstaffmemberwhorideswithstudentsastheyreturnonthebustotheirhomeschoolcampuses.

InaddiFon,BeyondtheBellprovidesfreeaeerschoolsupervisionunFl6:00p.m.whichincludeshomeworksupport,supper,andindoorrecreaFonalacFviFes.

AlvaroCortés,ExecuFveDirector,stated,“BeyondtheBellisproudtobeapartoftheoutstandingworktheDistricthasdonetoaddressthiscatastrophe.Thenewsiteswerecreatedduringthewinterbreakandtheylookgreat.TransportaFon,foodservices,andmanyotherdepartmentsallsteppeduptohelp.BeyondtheBellworkedcloselywithDistrictstafffromotherunitsandLocalDistrictNorthwestandwithparentstomakesurethatthelocalcommunityknewitcouldcountonustokeeptheirkidssafeduringthistransiFon.”

Atarecentin-servicefortheBeyondtheBellElementarySchool(ES)Unit,supervisorspresenteduniquetopicssuchassocialawareness,parentandcommunityinvolvement,andanF-bullying.ThesepresentaFonsweremeanttoinspirestafffromtheaeerschoolprogramstogetstudentsinterestedinsocialchange.SupervisorswantedparFcipantstogetinvolvednotonlyatthecommunity,butalsoonalargerscaleorgloballevel.ManyofthestafftookthepresentaFonveryseriously,butoneinparFcularembracedtheconceptandshowedthestudentshowtheirschoolcommunitycouldmakeahugeimpactthroughouttheworld.

CoachZairaMarroquinfromMichelteronaESworkedonaspecialprojectwithherstudentsandschoolcommunitytogivebacktoaspecialorganizaFon.TheorganizaFonisknownastheSoleHope.ThisorganizaFoncontributesmuchneededsuppliestothechildrenofUganda,Africa.Theseresourcesincludewater,food,clothes,andmedicaltreatment.TheSoleHopeprojectinvolvesvolunteersandsupporterswhocutFnyshoepiecesfromdenimjeanstomakeclosed-toeshoesforthechildrenofAfricawhoarebaklingwithaninfestaFonofjiggers-smallsandfleasthatenterbarefeetandburrowintotheskin.IfthisinfestaFonisnottreated,itcancauseseriousproblems,suchas,infecFons,paralysisandinsomecases,amputaFon.

TheSoleHopeorganizaFoncreatedpakernstobeusedatshoecuingparFesallovertheworld.CoachZairadecidedtohostsuchapartyatherschooltohelptheAfricanchildren.Zairaorchestratedadenimweekandcollectedjeansfromstudents,parents,andcommunitysupporters.ThestudentsparFcipaFngintheaeerschoolprogramcontributedtotheprojectbycuingshoeshapesforthecause.Thisinvolvementprovedtobeaveryrewardingexperienceforthestudents.TheylearnedsomethingaboutthechildreninAfrica,anduFlizedtheirempathicskillstocreateaposiFveresultforchildrenlivingonanotherconFnent.

TheBeyondtheBellBranchisdelightedtohavetwoteamsamongthe30teamsparFcipaFnginthenaFonalcompeFFonforStellarXplorers,aprogramcreatedanddesignedbyTheAirForceAssociaFon(AFA).StellarXplorersisanexciFng,space-focusedcompeFFonthatprovidesstudentsintheaeerschoolprograms,AWorldFitforKids(WFIT),atSanteeEducaFonComplexandTheBoysandGirlsClubofCarsonatCarsonHighSchool,withasFmulaFnghands-onlearningexperienceallowingstudentstodevelopspacesystemengineeringknowledgeandskillsthatarecommerciallyvaluable.BeyondtheBellhasprovidedthiswonderfulcompeFFonopportunitywhilealsoprovidingcomputersandotherresourcestoensuretheprogram’ssuccess.

BothschoolshavediverseteamscomposedofsixmoFvatedandcleverteenagerswhostrivetoberolemodelsforotherteenagersintheircommuniFes.TheyareeagertobepartofaprogramthatservesasapathwaytochallengingandrewardingcareeropportuniFes.ThroughthisprogramstudentshavealreadylearnedtoappreciatethecriFcalandexpandingrolesthatspacesystemsplayinournaFonaldefenseandalsoinourdailylives.SanteeECandCarsonHSteamshopetobeoneofthefiveteamsthatwillreceivetheall-expense-paidinvitaFontoColorado,forthefinalsandculminaFngeventsduringApril11-14,2016.TheeventwilltakeplaceduringtheSpaceFoundaFon’s32ndannualSpaceSymposium.

TheAirForceAssociaFonhasmatchedtheteamswithexperiencedmentors.AtSantee,WFITispleasedtohaveLieutenantAndrewHiltonfromtheSpaceandMissileSystemsCenter.Lt.Hilton’sleadership,mentoring,experienceandknowledgewillnurturethedevelopmentofvitalskillsthatourstudentswillgainwhilealsointroducingfirsthandthecareeropportuniFesthatexistforyoungstudents.

FranciscoCortesofSanteeECisabright11thgraderwithhopesofonedayakendingMIT,CALTECH,USC,orUCLA.Heisconfidentthatthisprogramwillincreasehischancesofbeingacceptedtohisdreamschool.HedreamsofbuyinghisparentsahouseonedayandhelpinghiscommunityofSouthLosAngeleshavemoreaccesstotechnologyandcareersinScience,Technology,EngineeringandMath(STEM).FranciscobelievesthattechnologyandhighereducaFonareinstrumentalforstudentslikehiminovercomingpovertyandproblemsassociatedwithlow-incomecommuniFes.StellarXplorersisthemoFvatorthatprovidesthelearningstepstoaSTEMfieldcareerthatwillallowFranciscotoachievehisdreams.

AworkshopwasofferedtohighschoolseniorseligiblefortheservicesoftheMigrantEducaFonProgram(MEP)andinterestedinakendingcollegeaeergraduaFoninJune.ItwasheldSaturday,November14,2015from8:30to1:30atRobertLouisStevensonMiddleSchoolandledbyJosePimentel,CounselortoMEPsecondaryschoolstudents.

Agroupoftwenty-five12thgradersarrivedonbusesfromseveralhighschools.TheylistenedtoguestspeakersandsharedtheirhopestobeacceptedintoUniversityofCaliforniaschools,CaliforniaStateUniversitycampusesandevenaschoolinTokyo.TheircareeraspiraFonsrangedfromPerformingArtstoBiologyandBusiness.TheywereeagertogetthebestadviceonthecollegeapplicaFonprocedures.

Mr.PimentelgavestudentscomputerFpsonscholarshipapplicaFonsforDollarsforScholarsandalistofotherscholarshipsontheweb.HethenprovidedaPowerPointpresentaFonenFtled“WriFngEffecFvePersonalStatements.”Itincludedpromptthemes,commonwriFngproblems,andinformaFononhowtheessaysarereviewed.HepointedouttheimportanceofgeingfeedbackonwriFngbeforesubmiing.

IncludedinthepacketweresamplecollegeapplicaFonessays,a“PreparingforCollegeCalendar,”SATtestdates,anda“TipSheetforUndocumentedStudents.”Intheaeernoonsession,CarlosAyon,CSULongBeachOutreachSpecialist,discussedtheadvantagesofakendinghisuniversity.ItwasadayforthestudentstogetanswerstothemanyquesFonstheyhadandtolearnaboutchoicestomake,wheretogoformoreassistanceintheselecFonofacollege,financialconsideraFonsandtheimportanceofanapplicaFonandessaysthatwillgetthemacceptedintotheschooloftheirchoice.

ADMINISTRATION

The Beyond the Bell Civic Center office provides access to LAUSD

school facilities and the appropriate issuance of permits to the community for supervised not-for-profit recreational activities,

meetings and public discussions. In conformance with the California

Education Code and the Board of Education, LAUSD public schools

are open to the community for use as long as all requirements are

met and regular school activities are not disrupted. Supervision is also provided for the purpose of

maintaining safe and secure District campuses.
