In the energy efficiency field most suppliers are able

to offer the basics for your plant performance,

but the ABCs are not enough.

That is why we are proud to present

the EFG’s of IndustrialPerformance.

Going beyond the ABC’s of

energy efficiency

To achieve significant savings...

...you need EFG

Evaluate Formulate Get results

The rising cost of energy and the increasing competition of low cost alternatives makeidentifying a cost-effective solution to reduce energy consumption one of the majorchallenges that industries must face.

These factors, combined with increasingly more restrictive energy regulations at the local, national and international level, are causing industries to turn to energy managementsystems and solutions to improve overall efficiency.

Identifying a reliable partner who can help you identify the right balance between long-term vision and short-term results, is not always easy. Determining the proper technologicalsolution for your needs can be a challenge. The latest and most expensive technology is notalways the right technology in terms of best-fit. Identifying the best technology requires acareful understanding of what is needed taking into account what is in place and looking atlife cycle development to achieve better results.

Thanks to more than a century of experience, Nidec ASI is able to work closely with itscustomers to find the ideal solution drawing on a profound knowledge of industrial plantsto tackle energy consumption issues.

In energy intensive industries such as Metals, Oil Refining, Cementand Power - energy represents 25% to 40% of the manufacturingcost to produce a good.

Evaluate current plant conditions From substation to Factory Automation, our team of experts will perform a full energy auditmeasuring current loads, inspecting plant auxiliary systems (such as your HVAC, Water andwastewater treatment plant pumps and fans) and verify the general conditions of all plantequipment for performance in order to identify areas of improvement

Formulate an improvement plan Our experts will then sit down with you to define a concrete improvement plan, workingwith you to define a program that will have minimum impact on your plant’s productivity interms of the down time needed to carry out improvements. We pride ourselves on ourflexibility in programming interventions around our customer’s production schedules. Moreover, the improvement plan will identify clear objectives in terms of energy savings andefficiency.

Get results Getting results is all about meeting objectives. Our professional project management teamworks hard to guarantee that improvement plans are implemented according to cost andon-shedule. All you have to do is reap the benefits from improved efficiency and lowerenergy costs.

The EFG’s of energy efficiency are all about... ...achieving tangible results

that guarantee a return on your investment

through three simple steps:

The first step of our EFG program is a thorough evaluation, or Energy Audit, of your plantfrom the substation to the factory automation system to determine current energyconsumption and efficiency levels.

Through an Energy Audit we are able to provide a complete consumption analysis aimedat defining an action plan to achieve a clearly defined energy savings objective.

The Energy Audit will provide you with the necessary information to identify the costs andbenefits of improvement interventions such as installing an energy management system, replacing older motors with high efficiency electric motors or retrofitting a VFD to existingmachines in order to increase production flexibility and achieve energy savings.

Nidec ASI is one of Europe’s leading suppliers for renewable energy solutions and can evenassist in the evaluation of integrating renewable energy sources into your existing energyplatform – whether it’s rooftop solar, mini-hydro, wind or biomass.

We understand the relevance of achieving a return on yourinvestment so we evaluate not only the technical feasibility butalso the economic impact of the proposed actions.

STEP 1 - Evaluate current plant conditions

Nidec ASI works with a team of accredited partners to evaluate your plant auxiliaries and can make recommendations concerningthe installation of energy recovery systemsor other additional solutions to improve efficiency.

The figures provided below indicate the typical energylosses in a medium sized industrial plant.

When analyzed individually they may not seem importantbut summed together, they can represent a significanteconomic drain.

30%The energy you may be losing

due to inefficiencies in your plant

PLANT AUXILIARIES:

- 17%Only 75% of the fossil fuel you buy getstransformed into the electricity and steam youneed for your manufacturing faciilty.25 % is lost in the transformation process so theactual losses in this phase are significantly higher.

FANS AND BLOWERS:

- 3%Most manufacturing plants use fans and blowersfor ventilation and for industrial processes thatneed an air flow. Fans often do not operate attheir best efficiency point (BEP). By using avariable speed drive energy consumptiondecreases by 50%.

STEP 2 - Formulate an improvement plan

Once the Energy Audit is completed our experts will sit down with you to define animprovement plan to reduce energy consumption and increase productivity. During thisphase we will discuss the potential savings and identify the investment requirements of theproposed interventions.

As a reliable partner in your energy savings project we are able to supply you with a fullrange of answers for your efficiency goals, from the single component - implementation ofvariable speed drive systems, replacement of electric motors – to complete energy solutionsincluding Smart Energy, the substitution and upgrading of ventilationsystems and the integration of renewable energy sources into your plant's energy supply.

We can also provide assistance in identifying alternative financing solutions and make surethe project complies with all local, national and international norms concerning Health,Occupational Safety and Environment.

STEP 3 - Get Results

After the formulation and approval of a plan, it is time to get results.

In this phase we manage the implementation of improvements and verify the results.

Thanks to a well formulated plan and a strong project management team, we guaranteeshort-term, tangible results.

The combination of a highly skilled project management team, highly qualified partners andsuppliers along with our know-how and experience allow us to guarantee that projects arecompleted within their designated time frame.

Completing a project on time may seem obvious but in today’s uncertain world we think it’simportant to bear in mind. We also pride ourselves on our flexibility and the ability tominimize downtime by taking advantage of your plant’s scheduled shutdowns wheneverpossible.

Condensate pump

For a 1,100 kW pump, yearly savings of 3,700,000 kWh can be calculated.

Setting the average price of energy at 0.065 Euros/kWh, this amounts to a savings of240,500 Euros per year per pump.

Payback period: less than 6 months

Combustion air fans

For a 320 MW internal combustionpower plant using two 2MWcombustion air fans consuming16000 MWh/year (average runningtime 8000 hours/year) annual savingsof 3175 MWh per fan for a total of6351 MWhs per plant yields a savingsof 413,000 Euro per year (based onan average energy price of 65Euro/MWh).

energy consumption

by up to 30%

Compressors, pumps and fans regulated by valves together with other

equipment represent an important potential for energy savings.

In these processes the use of a variable speed drive allows significant

additional benefits; for example, by eliminating inrush currents and overload

torques, the use of VFDs can prolong the life cycle of your equipment.

The figures indicated below were extrapolated from an energy audit

conducted on a cement plant in Western Europe.

The potential savings through the use of VFDs is evident.

Are you ready to move beyond the ABC’sand reap the benefits of our EFG program?

Evaluate Formulate Get results

To answer that question, ask yourself when was the last timeyou changed a lightbulb?

Today, energy efficiency is one of the key factors to improve the competitive position of

your industrial plant.

However efficiency improvements can only be maintained through internal professionalenergy management practices which include concrete actions in daily managementprocesses and increasing employee awareness.

To remain at the forefront on the market you need to start your efficiency program withsimple actions like substituting traditional light bulbs with energy saving ones.

This is an example of Domotics, which represents the individual step that moves you fromthe ABCs of a general program to our EFG efficiency goal plan. So, if you’ve alreadycontemplated D then you are ready for EFG.
