AN OCEAN OF DATA

A data deluge

o 5000 satellites, 4.6 million fishingvessels

o Sensors everywhere; in vessels, gears, animals, in space, in water

o Cyborgs: sensors will be a part of uso Citizens & mobile apps

o Intelligent reporting apps and sensors: real time data, automatic data descriptions and linking with relateddata, credits

o Edge Computing; e.g. vessel devices process data and communicate

175 zetabytes in 2025

Easier and less costly data acquisition

GLOBAL GOOD ACROSS BORDERS

No more silos

o Data managed according to FAIR Principles o Findableo Accessibleo Interoperableo Reusable

o Open Science inclusive access to science process; open data, methods, software, and publications

o Reproducibility, Repeatability, and Transparency

o Open participation in the research process

Example of Open Science:

Global Record of Stocks and Fisheries

Projection of the invasion risk of Alien Species

Example of a public commodity:

Fisheries data/information: a public commodity

AN ECOSYSTEM OF WEB ACCESSIBLE SOFTWARE SERVICES

Building on software services operated by

third-parties

o Computing, data hosting, data management, data analysis operated by different organizations

o The new internet connectivity technologyespecially mobile connectivity, e.g. 5G, 6G, will make «service hosting location» irrelevant

www.d4science.euiMarine infrastructure: an example of software service provider

o Define best practices and guidelines for development and exploitation of fisheriesinformation system related services, e.g. • Trusted service providers• Transparency and clear provision and usage

policies

Reduced investment & skills: many more scientists can perform their analysis and predictions

Artificial Intelligence innovation poses risks thatrequire an appropriate governance:

o Machine Learning models are as smart & biased as the data given in training. Who controls the data? Who ensure fairness, accountability, transparency and trustworthiness?

o Machine learning trained models are assets with a high economical and social value. How can we guaranatee equitable access and benefit sharing?

THE VISION FOR THE FUTURE

o The new generation of information systems will support more efficient, participatory and inclusive data-driven scientific approaches in addressing challenges like food security, adaptation and resilience to climate changes and ecosystem management.

o To make it happen the global scientific community addressing Fishery Sustainability willhave not only to adopt the new technologies but also to identify appropriate sharedregulations, guidelines and best practices for Information Systems.
