B E V I N N E W S www.ernestbevin.london Issue 153 Friday 15th November 2019 REMEMBRANCE SERVICE The college’s annual acts of Remembrance to pay respect to those service men and women who have lost their lives and been injured in conflicts around the world were led by the English Department and the Combined Cadet Force. The Cadets marched from college to St Mary Magdalene church, Wandsworth Common and were joined by other students on Friday 8th November. Thanks to the Reverend Philippa Boardman who led the service which included war poems and leers home from soldiers read by the students. The service was also aended by church members and local residents, some of whom had brought war memorabilia including medals, photos and even a World War II morse code machine. Mehmood and Juan 9LP, who are both cadets, said they were proud of being able to take part in the service in their uniforms and pay tribute to those who had lost their lives. They said they have been learning about World War I in history so to hear the poems being read out and to see the memorial in church to those people who had died in the World Wars, had made it a very poignant aſternoon. Reverend Boardman said, “On behalf of all of us at St Mary Magdalene, Wandsworth Common may I say what an absolute pleasure it was to welcome students, Cadets and staff from Ernest Bevin College to the Remembrance event.” YEAR 7 LEARNING SHOWCASE Well done to the Purple Ties who took part in the Year 7 Learning Showcase just before the half term break. Parents were able to see work they have completed in their first few weeks at secondary school and talk to teachers from every subject. The boys also put on various displays including a demonstraon of judo, a street dance performance, the winning song from the Year 7 singing compeon and a display of Roman military marching formaons from their History lessons. BLACK HISTORY MONTH The College hosted a number of acvies for Black History Month this October. There was an assembly for each year group by Performing Arts which included a dance presentaon and students acng out Black Brish stories. There were also famous quotes from influenal black people from around the world which was shown on the plasma screens around the school every day. Students were also able to watch a number of short documentaries around black history month with their tutors. The history department showed the films Black Panther and Hidden Figures every lunch me during the week 14th-18th October. The College also took part in a fundraising iniave 'Show racism the red card' which took place on Friday 18th October, students wore red in exchange for a donaon of £1 to raise money for this educaonal charity. A grand total of £167.60 was raised! A fantasc achievement! Ms Thomas

The college’s annual acts of Remembrance to pay respect to those service men and women who have lost their lives and been injured in conflicts around the world were led by the English Department and the Combined Cadet Force. BEST AWARDSThe College hosted the annual BEST (Business and Education Succeeding Together) Awards to celebrate the experience gained by students on Work Experience placements around the borough. BEST is the council’s education and business partnership and works with about 700 employers to give Wandsworth’s young people access to around a thousand work experience placements a year.

This year’s event was attended by students from Ernest Bevin College, Graveney Academy, Burntwood Academy, Chestnut Grove Academy, and Nightingale Community Academy. Sixth former Hassan Ahmed, from Ernest Bevin talked about his work experience at Fleetline Coachworks and the value and support he received, giving special thanks to his boss at Fleetline, Steve Harris.Hassan and Thomas, who both left Ernest Bevin this summer received a work experience award from Cllr Mary Cooper, Mayor of Wandsworth. Thomas worked at Cundall Engineering and they both were completed a one day-a-week work experience placement from November 2018 until February 2019 as part of the 12VOC programme.

FUN DAY CHEQUE PRESENTATIONThank you to everyone who helped at and came along to the Community Fun Day held in Broadwater Road in July. The event raised £3750 which was donated to the St George’s Hospital Charity at a ceremony at Gatton Primary School on 7th November. Staff and students from the College ran sporting activities at the event including table tennis and basketball. Akilesh 9STL and Tenzi 8YC helped encourage visitors to try table tennis at the Fun Day and represented the college at the cheque presentation.

Vivien Gunn, Head of Grants at the St George’s Hospital Charity said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to BATCA, St Augustine’s Church, and the Al Risalah Education Trust for all the incredible hard work they put into organising and holding the Community Fun Day. The day itself is a fantastic celebration of Tooting’s people and truly brings together the entire community.”

SCIENCE STARSA group of 18 Green Ties are taking part in Science Stars, run by St George’s University as part of its widening participation programme. The students will receive customised tutoring over a twenty-week period, delivered in small groups by trained St George’s university students. The programme was piloted last year with a group of purple ties and aims to boost their GCSE Double Science grades and encourage a love of science.

Marlene Copeland, Widening Participation Manager, said “After meeting all of the young people and their parents/ carers, it is clear how enthusiastic and committed they all are to the programme and I am confident that we will see fantastic results again this year."

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCERed Ties have also had a taste of the work place, having spent the week before half term on their placements. The boys all seem to have gained a lot from their experience and many employers have sent back some very positive feedback.Makari 10 HS spent his week at Waitrose and his supervisor said: “His communication with all was faultless and he even created spreadsheets we’ll be using for their next financial year for holiday allowances.”Yusuf S 10JSJ has feedback from Sellincourt Primary School that said: “His enthusiasm was infectious, he was patient and understanding and the children adored having him help them build musical instruments for DT Week.”

OSTERLEY INVITATIONAL JUDO COMPETITION

Four students made their debut when they represented the college at the Osterley Invitational Judo Competition held in October. This beginners’ level competition attracted competitors from London clubs and the surrounding areas. Well done to all our boys who came back with a medal:

BRITISH SCHOOLS’ JUDO QUALIFIERSThe British Schools’ Judo qualifiers were held on Saturday 9 November and the College and University championships were held on the Sunday 10 November at the University of East London. Two boys from the college entered, Shai 8 YC and Farid 12SH.

Great work from the Table Tennis teams who have all qualified for the London Schools finals that will take place in the New Year.The Under 19 boys team won the competition beating Westminster Academy 6-1 in the final.The Under 16s came second losing 3-5 to UCS in the final and the Under 13s boys team won their final 5-3 against UCS. WALES INTERNATIONAL JUDO COMPETITIONAt the beginning of November judoka went to the Wales Internationals which is a ranking event ahead of the British Nationals that will be held in December.

Well done to Youcef 10HS who won a Bronze medal at this, his first tournament in his new age category and weight division. He has worked hard over the 6 years he has practicing judo and he applied his judo skills and tactics against his opponents. He is the only athlete to win a medal in this transition from Pre-Cadet to Cadet level. Sensei Mike

Shai came 5th after fighting a boy in the year above him. He is making good progress and learning from every competition he enters.Farid took a gold medal in the older age group competition in spite of the fact he only took up judo in Year 11. Farid won his contest by ippon and beat a student who is at university, so older than him. His rapid progress shows his commitment to the sport and it is great to see his hard work pay off.
