Welcome to this, our silver jubilee Festival! When westarted in 1988 we had no idea that it would prove tobe such an outstanding success and it is appropriate tosay a few words of thanks! To Beverley BoroughCouncil for having the foresight to initiate such anevent – to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council andArts Council for offering the financial stability whichhas allowed the Festival to develop and grow – to theNational Centre for Early Music for taking on theadministration when the ‘going got tough’ – and toyou the audience for your loyalty and enthusiasm.

The 2012 Festival is designed as a celebration of musicfrom the 15th – 18th centuries and includes athoughtful exploration of Beverley’s own musicalhistory presented in the Guildhall – one of the town’sfinest Georgian gems – as well as performances bysome of the UK’s early music stars including StileAntico, the award-winning orchestral ensemble LaSerenissima and the ever entertaining Red Priest. Withassociated workshops for younger musicians, we hopethat there is something for everyone to enjoy in thiscelebration year.

Take a step back to 16th century England - full ofmemorable characters, political intrigue andreligious tumult, the Tudor era never loses its allureand fascination. Alongside their great matters ofState, the Tudors oversaw an extraordinaryflowering in poetry, painting, architecture and -perhaps most of all - in music. Stile Antico'sprogramme spans the entire range of this greatestperiod of English musical achievement. Each of thefive Tudor reigns, from Henry VII to Elizabeth I, isrepresented by a large-scale antiphon - severaldedicated to the Virgin Mary, the 'mystic rose'.Interspersed between these works are themovements of William Byrd's four-part mass: anaffectionate tribute by the last great Tudor masterto his illustrious heritage.“An ensemble of breathtakingfreshness, vitality and balance”New York Times
