On behalf of the President’s Council of the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling, I welcome you to The Omni Homestead

Resort and our 50th annual conference. For 50 years now we have gathered in venues such as this (well, not always nearly as luxurious as this) to discuss the college admission issues of the day while meeting new colleagues and fostering friendships. Over time, the hot topics have changed while also eerily staying the same. This year, PCACAC President-Elect, Mike Oligmueller, has curated a wonderful and varied set of panels and sessions for you to learn and reflect. As in college, you will do just as much learning here outside the “classroom” as in, and our Conference Planning Committee (CPC), expertly chaired by Heather Jeter, has worked hard to make sure your entire conference experience is a memorable one. Please thank our CPC volunteers and our incomparable executive assistant, Rhonda Douthit, when you see them. I know you will leave Hot Springs renewed and better equipped to serve because of their efforts. PCACAC was founded to support college admission counseling as a burgeoning profession and to ensure its ethical practice. As has always been true, we remain committed to supporting college admission professionals in the work we hold dear. We know the

strength of our association today is due to the dedication of so many volunteer leaders of the past – many of whom we’ll be fortunate to have with us and to celebrate at this gathering. At the same time, we look to the future as we anticipate new challenges and opportunities. Whether it is your first time here, your 50th, or somewhere in between, I wish you a wonderful conference filled with thought-provoking conversations and new friends. Thank you for being here. It is an honor to serve you all.

Thank you for joining us for the 50th PCACAC conference. The Conference Planning Committee has worked enthusiastically to bring you three days

of events that will ensure we fully celebrate this important anniversary for PCACAC and renew our commitment to guiding students to and through their college experiences. Whether this Conference is your first, tenth, thirtieth, or more, there is something here to cause you to think about your work and possible ways to reimagine it. If this is your first PCACAC event, I appreciate you joining us for this very special conference, and I invite you to introduce yourself. Our association relies on the talents and energies of its members to do what we do, and I would welcome discussing ways in which you could get involved with our work. This year marks the start of my fourth decade in this profession, with PCACAC as a source of expertise and friendship for the last thirteen years, and I encourage you to avail yourself of all that this dedicated community of admission professionals has to offer to your career growth. This Conference is a momentous event in PCACAC’s history, and it is made even more distinctive by this extraordinary location. I’m thrilled you’re here to celebrate and learn with us!

Welcome to PCACAC’s 50th Annual Conference! Since September, I have had the pleasure of working with an incredible team of dedicated people on the

Conference Planning Committee. We have worked to consider every detail and to make this year’s conference a spectacular occasion for each attendee. Please take a moment during the conference to give a big “thank you” to our Executive Assistant, Rhonda Douthit. Rhonda’s tireless efforts (when does this lady sleep?!) give our association and all of its events a unique sparkle. Thank you, Rhonda, for all you do.It is entirely appropriate for us to celebrate our 50th conference— a historic moment for our association—at such an historic locale. Since 1766, there has been a hotel named “The Homestead” on this site (the name honored the “homesteaders” who cleared the land for the original, 18-room, wooden structure). For 249 years, patrons have been drawn to the property’s hot springs and beautiful, remote setting. Although PCACAC cannot yet boast such longevity, we are proud to celebrate the five decades of college admission work our members have performed in service to students and their families. Amidst this spectacular setting, I hope you are able to unwind and rejuvenate your spirit. Enjoy these days and have a wonderful conference!

Greetings!

Bellarmine College PreparatorySan Jose, CAImmediate Past President, NACAC

Greetings! What an honor to represent NACAC at the Potomac and Chesapeake

ACAC’s 50th anniversary conference! I am excited about meeting, talking and listening to you as you gather together to celebrate many distinctive accomplishments over these past 50 years, honor amazing colleagues, and learn from each other. I am especially delighted to be in the affiliate that gave the gift of Jim Jump and Evelyn Boyd White, among others, to share their talents at the national level. One of my favorite things about my time as a leader in NACAC has been attending affiliate conferences. I have met some amazing people and learned about issues facing our members in their day-to-day work. The Executive Board of NACAC takes action each year on issues we learn about at the affiliate conferences, whether big or small, and I hope to learn a great deal from you all while I am here.

Positive action and engagement is so important to move our organizations and our colleagues forward in the profession. While I am here, I would be happy to talk with any of you about how I came to be President of NACAC . . . and the value of the work I continue to undertake in my own affiliate. There is a time and a place to give to others, given your family lives, your paying jobs and other responsibilities. But I do ask that you give more than you get; as you learn from others and provide service for others, that you do the same for those coming behind you. There is such value in each and everything we do, whether it is presenting a session, helping plan a conference, advocating with a state legislator, or passing out bags at a college fair.If I have met you before, I look forward to greeting you here! If I have not met you, I look forward to the opportunity to get to know you and learn what you think is important. I know we will all benefit from the hard work of the PCACAC Leadership and Planning Committee while we are here, and in years to come.

LIVING HISTORY PROJECTAs part of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of PCACAC’s Annual Conference, we are presenting an exciting project that will have long-range and historical significance to our association. Dal Holmes, retired member, graciously agreed to chair this venture, which is one of the cornerstones of our 50th Annual Spring Conference. The scope and magnitude of the Living History Project is such that it has taken years to fully develop and display.

The Living History Project records PCACAC history through interviews with some of our longest-serving members. And, it brings the historical record right up to the present with interviews of newer members of PCACAC as well.

We will share with you video clips, audio clips, photographs, slideshows, written interviews, etc. for all to see, learn from, and enjoy. Through this project, we hope to share the rich history of PCACAC and its members with our current membership while preserving our past. Please visit the Living History Project table in the Exhibit Hall.

LOCAL COUNSELOR SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMAfter a highly successful pilot year at the 2013 Conference, PCACAC is continuing this special outreach effort. Knowing that the cost to attend conferences poses a hurdle for many public school counselors, the Local Counselors’ Day Committee contacted the admission offices of many colleges and universities to ask if they would sponsor a number of local, one-day attendees. The response from these colleges and universities was tremendous! Through their support, the deans and directors of these admission offices have shown they are committed to and invested in offering quality professional development and networking opportunities to local counselors. It is our sincere hope that these counselors will discover new resources and support at this year’s Conference.

The following colleges and universities are sponsoring local public school counselors:

Session B1 – Finding the “Right Fit” in High School AdvisingAll levelsStratford

There is a trend encouraged by state legislatures, school boards and the media that pushes high school students to complete college credits prior to high school graduation. This can be confusing for students and parents when choosing a curriculum. College admission professionals will discuss the value of these accelerated courses (dual enrollment, AP and IB), how they are reviewed in the admission process, and how these courses might affect subsequent coursework and even financial aid.Evelyn Boyd White, Thomas Dale High School (VA)Kim Chaffer Schroeder, Transylvania University (KY)Mildred R. Session B2 – Gender and the Admission ProcessAll levelsMt. Vernon

How does gender impact the college search and application processes? Do girls and boys approach the college process differently? Should boys and girls be recruited differently? Should applications be read differently depending on gender? Which parts of the process favor girls? Which favor boys? We will compare and contrast gender in the college process for high school students, offer thoughts about recruiting each gender, and discuss the role gender plays in building a class from the college admission side of the desk.Jim Jump, St. Christopher’s School (VA)Stacy Price, University of Richmond (VA)Ann Marie Strauss, Garrison Forest School (MD)

Successful SSG applicants will propose events directly benefiting students, such as: trips to college campuses; money for student college counseling or financial aid workshops; or college programs to host prospective student groups. New and creative ideas are welcome!

Priority will be given to Student Support Grant applications that meet the following proposal guidelines:

address an unmet need in the community; can lead to the targeted participants’ increased involvement in the college process; give detailed plans for the use of the grant; and reach underserved populations.

PCACAC PAST PRESIDENTS

THE ANN POWELL MEMORIAL MENTORING PROGRAMPCACAC established a special mentoring program to honor the memory of Ann Powell who was Director of College Counseling at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and a respected leader in PCACAC. Ann’s life serves as a model of professional excellence and as an inspiration to all who knew her. Each participant has an assigned mentor who supports them in their role as a college counselor or as a college admission officer. The Ann Powell Memorial Mentoring Program is pleased to recognize the seventh class of participants:

PCACAC is now accepting nominations for the eighth class of the Ann Powell Memorial Mentoring Program. We need volunteers to serve as mentors, too. Help us carry on the vision Ann inspired with your time and commitment to share your expertise. Visit www.pcacac.org/ann-powell-mentoring-program for additional information and to nominate a colleague, or to self-nominate.
