Multiply the length of the roof 19.000 by the width 8.000 and then multiply by the roof pitch factor to increase plan area.e.g. for 25 degrees factor = 1.10319.000 by 8.000 = 152 m2

152 x 1.103 = 169.56 m2

HIP ROOF – DOMESTIC DWELLING

WORK INSTRUCTIONS

Check plan for Roof type, Pitch etc. The easiest way of calculating a Hip Roof without wastage of material is as per instructions below.

To determine the quantity of roof sheets required for a sample Roof cover of 22000mm.

– Divide by sheet cover width (in this case Corodek) 22000mm ÷ 762mm = 28.8 sheets (29) multiply x 2 to

cover both sides of roof = 58 sheets.

– The sheeting required for this project would be 58 sheets @ 4570mm.

– On an equal Hip Roof as shown above, by ordering the roof

sheets at one length wastage would be eliminated.

– As shown in the diagram below when sheets are cut along

hip line the surplus sheeting will be installed on reverse corner of roof.

WORK INSTRUCTIONS

Roof calculations of an irregular size with minimum wastage are simply achieved by using the following work instructions. For this sample we will use the roof profile of Metlok 500.

To determine the quantity of roof sheets required divide the roof cover by sheet cover width. 6000mm ÷ 500mm = 12 sheets. As per the drawing this roof taperes from 6530mm, away to nothing. For this Roof you will need to add the Gutter overhang plus fascia thickness into the sheet length, 6530mm + 70mm = 6600mm. To work out the step in the sheet, divide the sheet length by the quantity of sheets.

Sheet length = 6600mmQuantity = 12 sheetsSheet Step = 550mm

Now with the Step in the sheets determined, each sheet from 6600mm will be 550mm shorter than the prior sheet.

EG:- 1st Sheet 6600mm 2nd Sheet 6050mm 3rd Sheet 5500mm 4th Sheet 4950mm

and so on . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

METAL GUIDE CHART

Corrosive Path

MagnesiumZincZincalumeAluminiumCadmiumSteelLeadTinNickelBrassCopper

This metal guide chart lists commonly used metals in a “corrosive path”. If any of these two metals are in damp contact or a run-off situation, the metal higher on the table will sacrifice itself, ie. corrode to protect the metal lower on the scale. When it comes to the flow of water from one metal to another, the simple rule is to remember that you can run water downhill but not up. For example, zinc to copper is OK but copper to zinc spells trouble!

Not sure it if’s Zincalume or galvanized steel? If in doubt, submit the surface to the acid test:

1. Clean the surface area of the coated steel

2. Apply a single drop of spirits of salts (muriatic or hydrochloric acid) at about 1/3rd strength.

3. If the surface stays clean, the material is galvanized - black indicates Zincalume.

NEVER USE BLACK LEAD PENCILS

Black lead pencil marks can be a problem, for a good reason. Not because they have lead in them because there isn’t any lead in a lead pencil. Lead pencils are made from graphite and clay and graphite is a form of carbon. When placed in contact with most metals, this creates an electric cell when wet. The cell acts like a battery and chews at the metal surface, leaving an indelible mark. The trick is to use any other coloured pencil except black.

CleaningColorbond roofs should be washed regularly and more frequently in coastal areas where marine salt spray is prevalent, also areas with high levels of industrial fall-out. Use warm water and pure soap with a sponge or soft cloth.

PURLIN SPAN CHARTSQUICK SELECTION CHARTS

The following tables are based on design wind velocity 44 metres per second for a 50 year return period. Select purlins and girts based on this information to be used with steel roof and wall claddings. This table is a guide only and all sizes should be fully calculated. Spacing equals the maximum purlin or girt internal spacing. This figure corresponds to the maximum internal span of appropriate Metroll roof or wall cladding.
