With a small vanity or writing desk at the end of your bed, you'll be able to use and enjoy your bedroom during the day. Read your mail, study for a class, make your shopping list or a phone call in the comfort of your bedroom.

A large bench or ottoman can catch your bedspread at night, hold a tray of good-ies, or serve as a great place to sit. Choose a fabric cover that enhances your decor or let it stand out and choose something bold and bright.

TIP: For a seasonal change, add a soft, cuddly throw in the winter or light, sheer slipcover for summer

If you love to read or have extra company in your room, you could place two small chairs or side chairs at the end of your bed. Be com-fortable in your bed and allow your guest to have somewhere to relax as well. Or, with an ottoman and small reading lamp, you'll have a comfortable, private reading nook.

So you’ve finally moved into your first apartment/condo/townhouse. You’ve set up all your major bedroom furniture, but something is missing. If you are so fortunate to have a bedroom large enough to place excess furniture at the end of your bed, use our list to find the perfect piece for you. 1

So you aren’t really the “tidy” type. Your living space tends to get really cluttered really fast. Now you’re tired of walking

over mountains of clothes on your floor and searching endlessly through your room for those misplaced keys, but

you don’t know how to clean up and keep it that way.

Follow these proven 5 steps to cleaning house by to de-clut-ter your living quarters.

Sit down in your cluttered room and have a notebook and a pen handy. Look around the room and write down what you do and don’t like about what is there. Organize your

thoughts.

Next, make a shopping list. Things like: buy storage containers or closet orga-nizers to help you clear out 40% of everything in this room or space. Donate/sell

things you no longer use.

Work in only one section or room at a time. Get a basket for items that belong elsewhere. When you are finished with de-cluttering the entire area, then

you can leave the room to put these items away.

Create places for everything you keep and put things away after using them. Be re-alistic about where you place

things

Train yourself, and your roommate, to clean. Don’t cut corners or say that you will go back to something later. Al-ways clean up immediately.

Trade Up!When transitioning from a dormitory lifestyle to a apartment, condo, or townhouse of your own, its

time to purge outdated and childish items. Cliché posters and tacky furniture

will no longer do. It is time to trade in and trade up!

Lava lamps are for ten year old little boys! Don’t let your new home ap-pear to be imature and tacky!

Instead, opt for a lamp with

a bright color or intracate

pattern to add a little funky-

ness to the room’s decor.

By now, the plasic din-nerare you’ve been using since freshman year is old, mis-shapen, and has old food stuck to it. Yuck!

Upgrade to a real ceramic plate set! Affordable and classy, your guest will

appreciate the change

Shag rugs and carpets belong back in the 70s. They get caught on nearly everything and after a few months of good use, begins to fall apart!

A simple flece rug will do the tick. a colorforl intracate design or aplain one with bold color

will bring the room to gether perfectly! 7

Tired of the boring eggshell color painted on your apartment walls? Is the obnoxious green that you painted that accent wall starting to give

you a headache? Do you just want to give your living room some flair with out the hassle of painting?

“Our apartment has a really modern feel to it. We used bold furniture and set the décor off with just a touch of color!”

My Design!Real People . Real Design.

Ashley & Kadeem of Hampton, VA!

It just feels so much better to wake up my own space rather than sharing half my room with somebody else. Moving off campus has been the greatest!

I wanted to feel like the

room was really mine,

so I have a lot of photos

of myself. [chuckles]

I’m a bit of a narcissist.

Kadeem

“My room is like my haven. Perfectly comfortable and spacious.”

11

I like

h a v e a lot of

earth tones like green,

brown and beige. It brightens up per-

fectly when I open the blinds and let the light

in. My favorite part of my room has to be my giraffe. It’s

a great conversation piece and always gets people talking.

“I would describe my room as the clean outdoors.”

Ashley

“You could call it simplistic comfort. The right mixture of color, design and comfort.”-Jordan, Hampton,VA

“Its just my man cave.”-Sean, Los Angeles, CA
