Indoor environmental ergonomics: the human factors in thermal comfort and indoor air quality

One would think an entire industry based on providing comfortable, healthy and safe environments should be able to easily describe how humans actually develop perceptions about indoor spaces. But as strange as it sounds course curriculum and building codes only address “the hardware” and completely ignore “the software,” that being the human factors. This program is all about the software and the missing link connecting bodies to buildings.

This presentation is a careful look at how to achieve the highest levels of resilient and sustainable building enclosures while eliminating foam. The growing performance demands of air control, vapor control, thermal control, health and sustainability are examined. Foam insulation, dominant in today’s high performance marketplace, is increasingly recognized as hindering many of these building performance goals. Practitioners are therefore wanting and finding new solutions that virtually eliminate foam and provide greater performance.

Most contractors use the the best guess approach to estimating, then fail to verify how the actual bills came in compared to the estimate. Estimating is a game of exact guessing that must be mastered in order to have business that runs smoothly and then that estimate must be compared to the actual bills line by line. The true goal of estimating is to predict each bill that you will receive for each job. Accurate scope of work for each trade translates into a lower price to the customer and more money for the company.

Ductless mini-splits have been sold in the U.S. since the early 1980s. For the majority of the last few decades, this product type was only considered for niche applications. Recent product additions and changes have allowed this type of product to become mainstream. Being so, it is important that contractors, builders and architects become more familiar with this option. Attendees will receive

information on the latest technologies, available product types and how it can be applied to heat and/or cool an entire home. In addition, there will also be focus on economical designs, product aesthetics and efficiency.

ENERGY TRENDS

Residential solar power: a look at today and tomorrow

Interest in solar generated electricity has never been higher. The amount of solar capacity continues to grow despite updates to many utility electric rate schedules which reduce energy costs and increase fixed costs. Will this trend continue if state incentives are reduced and federal tax credits eliminated? A frank look at where we are, how we got here and what the future may hold for residential grid-tied solar energy systems.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

BETTER BUSINESS OPERATIONS

Take your design to the next level

LOCATION: TAMBOTI/ALOESWOOD PRESENTED BY: MICHAEL ANSCHEL, OTOGAWA-ANSCHEL DESIGN BUILD CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LUS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

Tired of boxes? Sick of white kitchens? This session will explore ways to break through convention and create inspirational spaces that are simultaneously creative and functional, unique and digestible. We will bend squares, disguise structure and craft new solutions. A hands on creative discussion with plenty of examples. Bring your notepad to this session and be prepared to explore!

CONSTRUCTION BEST PRACTICES

Radiant slabs: cost effective details for better function and code compliance

LOCATION: BALLROOM A/H PRESENTED BY: JOE NAGAN, HOME BUILDING TECHNOLOGY SERVICES CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LUS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, 1 CEU TOWARDS UDC-CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

Radiant slabs used in new home construction should provide good comfort and efficiency, but are we really integrating all the details needed to make this happen? Do we just simply add hot water? The slab becomes the distribution system in this case and needs to be completely within the 'thermal boundary' of the home. What details are needed and who makes this happen? In this session we will cover cost effective details for radiant slab heating. We will also touch on the mandatory requirements unique to the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code. MASTER SPEAKER

HVAC

Wood heating systems: tips for making good choices

LOCATION: ARALIA/MARULA PRESENTED BY: TIMOTHY BAYE, UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EXTENSION AND TONY MORICE, MARTH COMPANIES CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LUS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

Discuss all aspects of installing, operating and benefiting from wood or biomass thermal systems. We’ll cover specifications, facility characteristics and financial considerations. The history of wood heating, comparisons and contrasts with the European experience and a summary of options available to residential and commercial contractors and end-users will be addressed. Participants will be better prepared to evaluate options, overcome hurdles and assess the feasibility of wood-fueled heating systems.

ENERGY TRENDS

Connected products for new residential construction: the benefits of building smart

LOCATION: PORTIA PRESENTED BY: EMILY KEMPER, CLEARESULT CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU/HSWS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, 1 CEU TOWARDS UDC-CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

Installing connected devices in a home while it is being constructed can greatly reduce installation first costs and eliminate technical barriers that homeowners may experience with self-installation. Working with a HEMS or connected product vendor before the house is built may also give builders the chance to incorporate state-of-the-art appliances that are both energy efficient and connected via a command center model, potentially even streamlining bulk purchasing of equipment. In addition, providing a HEMS in a brand new home could give homeowners more insight into and control over how they use energy.

MARKETING

Build your business by building better homes

LOCATION: MANGROVE PRESENTED BY: STEVE ROMME, EFREE ADVISORS, LLC CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LUS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

New home construction is all about price, buyers don’t care about quality, comfort, indoor air quality, or energy efficiency. Wrong! They do care, but you need to show them the value. This session shows builders how to use optimization and smart building techniques to market and build new homes that are more comfortable, more durable, healthier, more energy efficient and provide the homeowner more value from the first day they move in. Build your business by building better homes.
