Indoor environmental ergonomics: the human factors in thermal comfort and indoor air quality
LOCATION: WISTERIA PRESENTED BY: ROBERT BEAN, INDOOR CLIMATE CONSULTANTS INC. CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU/HSWS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS, NATE 1.25 CEHS
One would think an entire industry based on providing comfortable, healthy and safe environments should be able to easily describe how humans actually develop perceptions about indoor spaces. But as strange as it sounds course curriculum and building codes only address “the hardware” and completely ignore “the software,” that being the human factors. This program is all about the software and the missing link connecting bodies to buildings.

Foam free high performance building enclosures
LOCATION: TAMBOTI/ALOESWOOD PRESENTED BY: FLORIS KEVERLING BUISMAN, 475 HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING SUPPLY CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU/HSWS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, 1 CEU TOWARDS UDC-CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS
This presentation is a careful look at how to achieve the highest levels of resilient and sustainable building enclosures while eliminating foam. The growing performance demands of air control, vapor control, thermal control, health and sustainability are examined. Foam insulation, dominant in today’s high performance marketplace, is increasingly recognized as hindering many of these building performance goals. Practitioners are therefore wanting and finding new solutions that virtually eliminate foam and provide greater performance.

Join a builder/remodeler, building performance consultant and Wisconsin code expert to discuss the evolution of Wisconsin’s residential construction practices. Throughout the United States energy codes are moving towards higher standards, should Wisconsin follow? With or without code, most agree that high performance homes reduce the operation and maintenance costs for homeowners and is good for business. Yet, the question remains, how do we build more of them? Now’s your chance to hear differences in opinion and share yours. From your perspective: What is the role of energy codes? How do we lower the cost of homeownership while improving minimum standards? How do we get more residential contractors to build better? Join us at this session to weigh in.

He wanted a new kitchen. She wanted new baths. They both wanted to cut space heating bills in half with no risk of rot or mold. So two innovative groups teamed up to adapt cutting-edge superinsulation techniques to a 1912 story-and-a-half home, adding R-24 foam and a rainscreen siding assembly to the original 2x4 wall to yield an R-40 wall assembly that is air-tight and utterly immune to cavity condensation. Jeff and Don will walk you through the process from beginning to end—from concept documents to detail drawings to field detail photos. Construction was completed in summer 2015.

You’re smart. You’re certified. And you’ve got that modeling software that spits out charts, tables and graphs. Now, how do you use these tools and more to help customers understand what their home needs? Many contractors are doing good assessments and making good recommendations, but not helping enough customers move forward to complete the work. One of the key elements in converting more audits to home improvement projects is to help customers understand your findings and their next steps. This session will highlight some of the common audit report pitfalls and discuss ways to make those reports be useful customer education and sales presentation aids. We do things to help make a home better but those same things can have negative outcomes in another area. Most contractors use the the best guess approach to estimating, then fail to verify how the actual bills came in compared to the estimate. Estimating is a game of exact guessing that must be mastered in order to have business that runs smoothly and then that estimate must be compared to the actual bills line by line. The true goal of estimating is to predict each bill that you will receive for each job. Accurate scope of work for each trade translates into a lower price to the customer and more money for the company.

Achieving net zero energy performance is less about equipment specs than you might think, but that doesn’t mean we get to ignore the mechanical systems. We’ll cover the importance of choosing the right consultants and subs and then how to collaborate with them to optimize the performance of the HVAC, water heating and renewable energy systems they’re designing and installing. And with buildings that have loads as low as net zero buildings, the integration of these small loads into a single or a reduced-number of separate mechanical devices and systems is key and will be explored.

Increasing use of distributed resources (energy efficiency, solar PV, batteries, home generators) is causing revenue losses for utilities and they are proposing new pricing systems in response. But the initial designs, which shift cost recovery between volumetric and fixed charges, are only the beginning. The ultimate trend is toward more complex pricing, which itself can create both problems and opportunities for customers and utilities. The history of wood heating, comparisons and contrasts with the European experience and a summary of options available to residential and commercial contractors and end-users will be addressed. Participants will be better prepared to evaluate options, overcome hurdles and assess the feasibility of wood-fueled heating systems.

Connected products for new residential construction: the benefits of building smart
LOCATION: PORTIA PRESENTED BY: EMILY KEMPER, CLEARESULT CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU/HSWS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, 1 CEU TOWARDS UDC-CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS
Installing connected devices in a home while it is being constructed can greatly reduce installation first costs and eliminate technical barriers that homeowners may experience with self-installation. Working with a HEMS or connected product vendor before the house is built may also give builders the chance to incorporate state-of-the-art appliances that are both energy efficient and connected via a command center model, potentially even streamlining bulk purchasing of equipment. In addition, providing a HEMS in a brand new home could give homeowners more insight into and control over how they use energy.

Build your business by building better homes
LOCATION: MANGROVE PRESENTED BY: STEVE ROMME, EFREE ADVISORS, LLC CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LUS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS
New home construction is all about price, buyers don’t care about quality, comfort, indoor air quality, or energy efficiency. Wrong! They do care, but you need to show them the value. This session shows builders how to use optimization and smart building techniques to market and build new homes that are more comfortable, more durable, healthier, more energy efficient and provide the homeowner more value from the first day they move in. Build your business by building better homes.
