September 2018
Greetings and Salutations in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
By the time you read this we will be in the month of September and the summer has flown by and we are getting
ready to get back into the full swing of school, work, and the changing of seasons. However, before we get there I
would like to look at our Gospel text from this past week. It comes to us from John 6 “When many of his disciples
heard it, they said, ‘This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?’ But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were
complaining about it, said to them, ‘Does this offend you?’ Because of this many of his disciples turned back and
no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ Simon Peter answered
him, ‘Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you
are the Holy One of God”.
I remember when I was younger and growing up in my home congregation, before the Gospel was read each week
we would sing “Alleluia, Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia”. As I prepared to
preach this week I thought about that song a lot and even more so the call and response from the so called disciples
of Jesus that were not the twelve. These disciples have seen Jesus feed five thousand people and have food left
over, they found out somehow he joined the twelve disciples while they were on the boat, they have seen other
miraculous signs and yet when Jesus sits down to teach them, their response is your teaching is difficult who can
accept it? Like people today, they only want to be around for the good times. They want to see the miracles, accept
the miracles, partake in the miracles, and yet when it is time for them to be the miracle they are no longer around
or don’t want to do the work for the kingdom. They say that the teaching is too hard and they can’t accept it. These
disciples complained and then they went and turned their back on Jesus, they walked away because they found out
that sometimes before you get to the Good News there is going to be a time where the teaching of God becomes
difficult, where it might make you feel bad, where it might pull on your heart strings, and where it might take you
out of your comfort zone. In our tradition they call that the Law.
However, the Good News or in our tradition the Gospel was delivered by Peter where he says to Jesus “Lord to
whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life”. Jesus gives us our entry into our eternal life because he is
the Bread of Life, the Lamb of God, Light of the World and Word of God. He was there in the beginning and will
be there in the end. Jesus never said discipleship was easy. In fact, he said at times it would be hard but he also said
he would always be there with us. So, as September has arrived and we are running around and at times we feel
overwhelmed, lost, stressed and overworked know that you can always go to Jesus, he has the words of eternal
life. Alleluia.
Yours in Christ,
Reverend James Smith
