LETTER FROM CEO

Bethesda is a ministry providing promising futures for children, youth and families.

Dear Friends of Bethesda: This year has been a remarkable one for Bethesda Lutheran Services.  July began with the revealing of our new name and our new logo. Changing our name from Bethesda Children’s Home to Bethesda Lutheran Services was not an easy choice, but we ultimately felt that, because of the growth we have experienced as an agency, Bethesda Children’s Home was no longer an adequate description of all that we do.  Our new name, Bethesda Lutheran Services, better encompasses the broad spectrum of services we provide while also allowing us to still pay homage to our Lutheran beginnings.  Our new logo is a visual representation of what we do at Bethesda Lutheran Services.  In the middle of our logo is a house which is a nod to our founding as a home for those children who had nowhere else to go.  In the middle of the house is a window; the window pane is a cross which denotes our Lutheran heritage.  The yellow in the window signifies a light that is always on because we are always here for the children, youth and families we serve.  Behind the house are mountains with peaks and valleys, and just like those mountains, our youth rise and fall but they never stop.  This is because of our staff that are right alongside our kids; our staff are always encouraging, supporting and believing in our kids when they may feel as though they cannot do it themselves.  Below the logo is our tagline: “Promising Futures!” That is what we strive to do; we strive to provide promising futures to each and every child, youth and family we work with. The work done at Bethesda Lutheran Services is truly a team effort and it is a team that I am proud to be a part of.  In August of 2017, we received the Winslow Award. This award is presented by the Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County. The Winslow Award was named for Dr. Harry C. Winslow, a noted surgeon and Meadville business leader and is presented every year to a person, business or organization that is making a significant contribution to economic growth of Crawford County.  I was thrilled to accept this award on behalf of everyone at Bethesda Lutheran Services and so proud of my team for the hard work and dedication they put forth in order for us to receive this honor. The start of 2017-2018 school year set in motion new programming at Bethesda Lutheran Services; our Acute Partial Hospitalization Program opened at our Meadville campus.  This program mirrors our existing Partial Hospitalization Program, except that this program allows us to serve youth with more acute mental health needs while also allowing them to remain in a classroom setting to ensure that they receive the mental health care that they need in order to return safely to their homes, schools and communities. In Erie, our Truancy Program is growing.  For several years, we have provided a Truancy Officer for the Union City School District.  In 2018, we contracted with the Erie City School District to provide two truancy officers beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.  That school year will also see the expansion of our Alternative Education Program in Erie when we begin that service for five Erie County School Districts.            I want to thank all of our donors and supporters—individuals we consider to be some of our closest friends here at Bethesda Lutheran Services—for helping us provide the promising futures our children and families deserve.  We have a lot of things that we want to accomplish this year, and I know that with each and every one of you as a part of our team, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. God Bless,    George R. TraunerChief Executive Officer
