Midweek Advent Worship This Advent season, we invite you to leave the “hustle and bustle” of the preparations behind for a brief time each Wednesday evening, and join us for a midweek Advent worship service. This brief service (only about 35 minutes) is a candlelight service and uses the beautiful sung liturgy, “Holden Evening Prayer”. The theme for Advent worship is People, Look East. The midweek Advent worship services will be held on Wednesdays, December 5th, 12th and 19th at 7:00 p.m.

In the midst of the busyness of the holiday season, take time to worship with us in the midst of the week and center yourself in the reason for the season – Jesus Christ.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Advent! December 2 marks

the beginning of a new year of the church calendar with

the season of Advent. Advent is a time of expectant

waiting and spiritual preparation for the Nativity of Our

Lord at Christmas. The word advent comes from the Latin

word adventus, which means “coming” or “visit.”

During Advent we are especially mindful that we need a Savior. We recall both

“advents” of Christ: We look forward to the Savior’s second coming at the same

time we prepare to celebrate Christ’s first coming at Christmas. Advent is a time

we live in the tension of expectant waiting. We reflect on scriptures and sing hymns

rich with themes of mystery and wonder.

Do wonder, waiting and preparation sound and feel familiar? As I begin serving in

my call as your Pastor, I am reminded that God has prepared us for this very

moment. How might we live into the mystery of Advent together? How might we

celebrate and cultivate a sense of wonder? Certainly there is much to wonder

about as we embark on our journey together: What is God up to at Bethel? What is

God up to in Green Bay? Our Synod? Our world?

God faithfully and relentlessly calls us to wonder, even when we wander. God calls

us into community time and time again. These are exciting times at Bethel. With

great hope and anticipation we journey together, led by the Spirit into a bright

future. How wonder-full is that?!

Annual Reports are Due!

All Bethel committee and organization chair-persons are asked to turn in their annual reports to the church office by December 20th so that the 2018 Annual Report can be printed and made available to the congregation prior to the congregation’s annual meeting. Thank you in advance for getting your reports to us by that date!

Bethel’s Budget

Bethel’s proposed budget for 2019 is available for review! You may pick up a copy of the budget packet at the church. The congregational meeting for voting on the budget will be held on Sunday,

December 2nd between the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Please bring your copy of the budget packet with you to the meeting as a limited number of packets will be available then.

All confirmed members of the congregation are strongly encouraged to attend and take part in this discussion and decision as we look ahead to the new year of ministry here at Bethel!

2018 Offerings

In order for your offerings to be counted for the year 2018 they must be submitted no later than Sunday, December 30th. Any offerings turned in after that date will be counted for 2019. Thank you.

Offering Envelopes

Offering envelopes for 2019 will be available to pick up during December. If you worship with us regularly and would like to receive offering envelopes, please contact the church office.

At the front of your box of envelopes is a special envelope

marked “Initial Offering”. This offering of $2 helps offset the envelope printing costs. If you are able to make this initial offering, it would be greatly appreciated. Those who participate in Simply Giving, you still need an envelope number of recording your giving. Please pick up your box for special Lent, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas giving.

Please note that your offering envelope number may have changed so throw out any unused 2018 offering envelopes when the new year begins in order to make certain your offering is credited to you. Thank you.

Aebleskiver Basket Sign Ups It's time to get started on Aebleskiver! The sign ups for baskets are available in the hallway!

Select your basket, collect your items, and drop off in the Mission Room! The Basket Making Team will do the rest...we will inventory, wrap up, and present the baskets. You can team up with multiple people to create a BIG basket! You can also donate

money to The Basket Making Team and we can pick up items for baskets! It's the perfect time to shop for your basket! Pick a theme or create your own themed basket!

Bethel Revitalization

A new opportunity to look at the physical structure of Bethel Church is underway. For several years we have been addressing structural and worship design concerns within our sanctuary in a somewhat fragmented fashion. Committees such as Memorial and Special Gifts and the Core Teams of Bethel, along with the Church Council, have discussed and identified needed updates.

Together we learned over a year ago, through the Saturday, October 21st event with Pastor Jean DeVoll-Donaldson entitled “Walking with God in a Changing World”, that parts of our

church building are somewhat dated and need care. Electrical redesign for lighting and technology are among the areas of need. Addressing these structural concerns will help us in our journey to continue to be a relevant church in a changing world.

With that, I am asking individuals of the congregation to join with the Leadership Core Team to form a study committee for church sanctuary renovation. It will be important to maintain the traditions of Bethel, yet be innovative enough to move us forward in living out our mission and vision.

Through the efforts, over the past several years, of Sue Keckhaver, our Administrative Assistant, we have found a Wisconsin Design Company that would be able to help us fulfill our needs in an organized and thoughtful fashion. Now we need some of you to reflect on and define those needs.

If you are willing to volunteer to be part of this Sanctuary Revitalization Committee please contact Sue in the Church Office by Monday, December 10th. Thank you for sharing your gifts!

Special Music Opportunities

Whether it’s adding an instrumental or vocal descant to a hymn or being part of a larger group, special music is a valuable addition to our upcoming festive Christmas worship services. If you play a brass, woodwind or string instrument, please consider sharing your talents with us. Vocal opportunities exist for solos, duets, or small ensembles as well as singing with the Bethel Choir. If you would like more information, please contact Diane Meinel, Music Director.

NEW Shelter Meal on Sunday, December 9th

The collaborative team of Bethel, Trinity and Resurrection will be serving the lunch meal at the NEW Shelter on Sunday, December 9th.

Needed - 2 volunteers to help serve the meal and several people to provide bars and cookies.

Please see the sign-up sheet in the hallway if you are able to support this ministry. Servers need to arrive around 11:00 for the meal, which begins at 11:30. Bars and cookies can be left on the pew outside the church office and the servers will take them to the shelter.

Our Sympathy

We extend our sympathy to the family of Ernie Hansen who died on Monday, October 22nd. Ernie’s funeral was held here at Bethel on Friday, October 26th.

Feed My Starving Children

Thank You and Update

Thank you to the many people from Bethel who

volunteered at the Feed My Starving Children

mobile pack, filled quarter tubes, and made

donations to purchase rice meals! The goal this

year was to pack 750,000 meals and volunteers

exceeded that goal and packed 785,376 meals!

An additional 35,376 rice meals (manna packs)

for hungry children across the globe! We had

101 finished pallets, 3 semi’s full!!! This feeds an

AMAZING 2,151 children for an ENTIRE YEAR!!

Thank you, thank you!

We are already beginning to make plans to raise

awareness and funds for the 2019 pack. If you

would like to make a contribution to the Feed My

Starving Children mobile pack, that would be

greatly appreciated!

Celebrations and New Adventures for the Mbatia family!!

Dear Bethel,

Two major changes will soon be happening in the lives of our friends George, Rahab and Makena!

1. George will be graduating from Fox Valley Tech on Saturday, December 15. Anyone who wishes to send congratulations can address them to:

2. With love and support from Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Appleton, the family is moving toward independence. George needs some help and networking to find a job or internship. In order for George to remain in America on his VISA he needs a job related to his Tech School degree.

Reverse Advent Calendar What is a reverse advent calendar? Why you should make one this year with your family!

Everyone loves advent calendars to count them down to Christmas Day. Most children adore receiving one at the beginning of December because it gets them excited for Santa coming and every surprise that they open on the way is a promise of what’s to come.

But if you want to try something a little different this year, you can create an advent calendar that you and your children put something into every day instead of taking something out. Reverse advent calendars work by you filling them every day with items of food or clothing that can then be taken to a food bank or charity in order to help those less fortunate that are strug-gling at Christmas time.

After gathering helpful items all month, you can take everything you’ve saved to your local help scheme on Christmas Eve and know that you’ve given a Christmas present to someone that really needed it. Not only is this a fun thing for the whole family to do together, from creating the advent calendar structure itself to picking the goodies to go in it, it more importantly teaches your kids the importance of helping others and seeing the bigger picture at Christmas.

Follow these five simple steps to start this sweet tradition with your children.

Step 1:

Start either 24 or 12 days before Christmas and decide whether you’re going to collect food, clothes or presents.

Step 2:

Pick something to collect your advent calendar gifts in. This can be something really easy like a basket or cardboard box, or alternatively you could make individual pockets for each day using strips of cardboard and even add some paint and glitter to jazz it up.

Step 3:

Every day choose something from your own supplies or from a store with your family to donate to your reverse advent calendar.

Step 4:

A few days before Christmas when you can make some time, take your offerings down to your local food bank or charity and donate them.

Step 5:

Spend some time with your little ones imagining who you might have helped by starting this special tradition and ask everyone to pick a reason why they are lucky this Christmas.

The Red Door Inn by Liz Johnson

series.

Forgiveness by Adam Hamilton

You may recognize the author’s name from the video series “24 Hours that Changed the

World” that Bethel did several years ago. Adam Hamilton is a Methodist pastor in Kansas who

is able to explain questions of faith in a down-to earth manner. He equates our need to forgive

and be forgiven with carrying a backpack filled with rocks. Over time the tiny stones and large

boulders weigh us down and break more than our spirit. Hamilton shows how to receive the

freedom that comes with forgiving, even if it is our self that needs to be forgiven. A challenge to

each of us to practice forgiveness!

The Amazing Adventures of Harry Moon – Halloween Nightmares by Mark Andrew Poe

Halloween visited the town of Sleepy Hollow and never left. Darkness may have found a

home in Sleepy Hollow but if Harry Moon, a young eight grade magician, has anything to say

about it, darkness will not be staying. This is a new addition to our books for the upper grades.

They are currently found on the left shelves as you face the book wall in the children's’ library.

Waves of Mercy by Lynn Austin

Set in Holland, Michigan in the late 1890’s , two women search for answers along the shores of Lake Michigan. Anna Nicholson, a Chicago socialite, seeks to recover from her broken engagement and find answers about her new-found faith. Geesje de Jonge begins to search through her own memories of arriving from Holland almost fifty years ago. Past and present collide as Anna and Geesje seek clarity, but neither expects the revelations that await them.

Call to Order: Michael Zastrow called the meeting to order at 6:39 pm.

Prayer: Michael Zastrow opened the meeting with prayer.

Dwelling in the Word: Michael Zastrow began the meeting dwelling in the word based on Acts 16:6-15, NIV. Read through it and discussed it in groups and then as a team. NEW BUSINESS:

Building Use Request: The Wolf River Area Square Dance Association has requested use of the Fellowship Hall for their quarterly meeting on Monday, January 21, 2019 from 6:45 to 9:15 p.m. Motion to approve this request. Seconded. Carried. Building and Grounds Equipment: Recommendation to purchase a backpack blower for light snow removal of church sidewalks and around the entry areas. Sunday School Concern: It’s been recognized that we need a teacher/guidance for middle school age kids during Sunday School. This will be brought to the Spiritual Growth team. Is there a curriculum through the Synod for this age group? Looking to put together a group of individuals/teachers to teach and work with this age group each Sunday.

OLD BUSINESS:

Journey Together Faithfully Update: Journey Together Faithfully is looking at using a mentor/coach to assist in this process. Crossways Camping Ministries Update: Would like an update on Crossways Camping Capital Campaign. Budget - Finalize: Council completed reviewing and finalized the budget that will be presented to the congregation on Sunday, December 2nd between the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Passed unanimously.
