If so, here are a couple of dates this fall that you will want to note in your calendar: Membership Matters – Sunday, October 16, 12–1:30 p.m. in the Christian Life Center Come and meet Bethel’s staff and learn more about Bethel while enjoying a delicious pizza lunch. On Sunday, October 16, from noon to 1:30 pm, we will have Membership Matters, a time of information and discussion for people who are considering joining the Bethel community. You are invited to join the Bethel staff for pizza and an informative gathering about Bethel congregation, its mission and ministries, and our hopes and dreams for the future. You do not have to

attend to join Bethel, but participation will help you decide if Bethel is the right congregation for you. Childcare will be available. For more information, please contact Pam Santerre, our Pastoral Minister, at 786-8951. New Member Sunday, November 6, at 10:45 Worship and Lunch from 12 – 1:30 p.m. Twice each year, we will recognize all who have joined the congregation with a public reception during worship, followed by a fellowship meal. New members and sponsors will receive an invitation before the event.

Did You Know? Part I Bethel's Sunday worship services are broadcast on NTV on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. At Northfield Hospital you can view the worship services on channel 14 on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m., Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 10 a.m.

Did you know? Part II Bethel is available 24/7 on the web at bethelnorthfield.org — and on Facebook at facebook.com/bethellutheran. There’s also a separate site for Bethel youth — search on Facebook for “Bethel Lutheran Youth”!

Can you offer a ride on Sunday mornings? We have three separate families (one couple, one

family of four, and one gentleman whose wife often works on Sunday mornings) in need of rides to worship on a weekly basis. All three want to attend our late service; and the family with children would need to be here in time for Sunday School. Perhaps you could consider one or two Sundays each month, or perhaps weekly? Let’s take away one simple obstacle (transportation) to regular worship among us. If you can help permanently or once in while or if you just want more information, please contact Sandy in the church office.

As you may have noticed, Madeline and Bronwyn are (thank goodness) not particularly shy. How I admire them! In campgrounds, they head out on their scooters as soon as we're done

setting up, scouting campsites for kids to play with. Every vehicle that pulls in to the campground holds a potential adventure. Every kid bike leaning against a tree indicates a likely new friend. At a

campground somewhere in northern Montana, a multi-axle RV pulled into the loop during the late afternoon and one of the girls said, "Oh, goodie! More friends!" before anyone had even emerged from the camper. Most of the time they don't know the names of the kids they play with and vice-versa, although this year we came home with a few phone numbers and yes, even email addresses for kids who live in Montana, British Columbia, and New Hope, Minnesota. The girls' favorite campground was a noisy stopover spot in Sandpoint, Idaho, with gas pumps that were in use 24-7 by some of the loudest vehicles Lisa and I have ever heard. Why? Because they had a new buddy, Kaitlin, who was as delighted to discover them as they were to discover her. They would have happily stayed in this dusty glorified field for the whole vacation, not even venturing to gorgeous Lake Pend Oreille a few miles away, just to play fort with their new friend. (Yes, we "made" them swim in the lake anyway.) By the time we moved on, Kaitlin was an old friend, dear and already missed. We replayed this scene in Wasa Lake, BC, Fort Peck, MT, East Grand Forks, MN, and several other spots. Ask them what they liked best about our trip and you won't hear about exploring Moraine Lake, which left me

October 2011 Page 3

As many of you know, our family goes camping every summer. We prefer to head toward the mountains, taking as many two-laners as possible while avoiding big cities and interstates. Every year, we try to explore areas we haven't visited before. Instead of planting our camper in one spot for long stretches of time, we tend to wander, stopping when we see something we like or when we're tired, exploring the sights as we wish, moving on as the breeze blows us. There have been a couple of times when this lack of planning has backfired - two or three less-than-desirable campgrounds, one or two mini-marts that had to serve as grocery stores, but most of the time we discover hidden treasures. I am regularly awed by the majesty and variety of God's creation, and the generosity and downright goodness of God's people. This year in Banff National Park, Lisa and I agreed that we were actually getting tired of saying "Wow!" all the time and were both looking forward to getting back to what we termed "normal beautiful." One of the aspects of camping that I most appreciate is the quiet. Getting away from the electrical hum of civilization has a soothing effect on my psyche and soul. Letting go of the "to do" list of everyday living is relaxing. I sincerely hope that each of you had a chance to rejuvenate as we did, whether you spent your summer at the Northfield pool, the Rocky Mountains, the lake, or in your own backyard. While our annual vacation is a chance for me to have fun with my family, relax, drink in the beauty of the earth, and let go of my daily routine, for the girls it is simply a chance to make friends all around the continent.

speechless, or hiking in Glacier National Park, or Fort Peck Dam, the third largest earthen dam in the world. No - you'll hear about the kids they met and the fun they made together. As September began at Bethel, I marveled at the new faces in the narthex. Who are these new folks, including all the children and teens, and how will I ever learn their names? I will take the girls' approach. Every new person is a potential friend. Every new family is a welcome addition to church. Every old friend is cherished. All have gifts to offer for the glory of God. I wonder if perhaps the girls understand instinctively what we heard in Pastor Charlie's sermon on Matthew 20:1-16: every laborer in God's vineyard is valued and valuable, welcome and needed. Welcome and welcome back to Bethel. I'm glad that you're here.

From the Senior Pastor...

Welcome to Our Newest Members Alyce Nelson Bron and Geniene Scherer and their children, Katharine, Ivan, and Sam Mike and Karleen Sherman and their daughter, Junia Julie Anderson and her twin 13-year-old daughters, Ruby and Sophie Shirley Ann Larsen

schedule that will increase your sense of peace and well being. Here are just a few ideas:

Meal Time – Sit down at a table with chairs. No standing around the kitchen counter. Wait until everyone is seated to begin. Take a big breath – literally. Count to three and have everyone inhale and exhale slowly for five breaths. Pray. Thank God for the food before you and the time together. Include prayers for anyone and anything else that is on the minds of those in your family. Share your highs and lows for the day. Bed Time – Create a routine that begins well before it is actually time to

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven… Ecclesiastes 3:1 Fall is here and we are back in the season of schedules and routines. There can be great comfort and peace in the rhythm of our school year lives. And yet, when we find our schedules too full and our days too filled with activities, our routine can feel like a race each day from beginning to end. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me all who are weary and I will give you rest.” Spend some time this month with your family looking at your daily and weekly schedules and discuss how everyone is feeling about how their days and weeks are playing out. Is there time for rest? Relaxation? Time with each other that doesn’t involve running from one place to the next? If not, spend some time brainstorming whether or not there are things that can be removed from your schedule to free up some time or whether or not there are things that can be added to your

go to sleep that includes: Getting clothes, homework, backpacks, lunches, etc. ready for the next day. A small healthy snack. Clean up – toys, games, rooms, and bodies – teeth, face, etc. Reading – bedtime stories, Bible stories, a chapter a night book. Even as children become old enough to read themselves, it is a great tradition to read a book together. Morning – Set the alarm early enough that everyone has time and no one feels rushed out the door. Eat together. Discuss the plans for the day. Have everyone share one thing that they are looking forward to that day. As everyone leaves for the day, offer a blessing to each other. Make the sign of the cross on each other’s foreheads and use a different blessing every day or every week or use the same one day after day. It can be as simple as “May God keep you safe throughout the day.” or “Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven.” The seasons come and go – faster and faster, it seems, each year. All the more reason to be sure that no matter the season, we always make time for each other and for rituals that will strengthen our time together and our faith in a God who offers rest and peace in every season.

Sunday School in the Nursery???? Yes! You read that right! The Nursery is

now offering a "Sunday School-like experience" for our older toddlers during the Sunday School hour. We kicked this off on Rally day, and our nursery friends have really enjoyed reading a Bible story, singing songs, and making a craft alongside their other friends. What a great way to give these Little Lambs a Sunday School

experience in a relaxed environment that is perfect for their age group. Mark your calendars! Parents Night Out is back! The next PNO will be on November 5, 3:30-7:30 p.m. Sign up information coming soon! Please check the weekly Banner and the Nursery bulletin board for more info. Artist of the Month!

With all of the coloring, painting and drawing that happens in the Nursery, we thought it would be fun to share

From Amy Narveson... As a mother of three young children I often tend to worry about a variety of things such as my children’s health and well-being, their education, or, as a parent, making the right choices for my family - to name just a few. I often find that many of the things I worry about are out of my control. It’s at those times I think of Proverbs 3:5-6:

Martin Luther believed that Scripture is the bedrock of our Christian faith; indeed without God’s Word we cannot

claim faith in God! Last month, I asked you, Bethel Banner reader, to share a verse or Bible story that sustains you in your walk with God or has sustained you at a particular time in the past. Thanks to our first responders, Amy and Bryce Narveson, who each share a verse that gives them hope and encouragement! From Bryce Narveson… My favorite psalm, Psalm 103, is full of God’s promises to us. One promise in particular I have been thinking about recently is in verse 12: “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Amazing! When we are forgiven, we are made brand new! I am not allowed to dwell on my past sins as if they are still a part of me. Instead, I am to respond to God’s gift of forgiveness by thanking Him for His compassion toward me, and then by setting my sights back onto God and not looking back!

these talents with the rest of the congregation! Each month we will be featuring an "Artist of the Month" on our bulletin board across from the Fireside Room. We will be displaying the artwork and photo of our featured artist, with a new artist each month. Be sure to check it out!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” These verses are a reminder that I need to commit my heart and mind to God in all circumstances. God’s presence is constant. When situations in my life are out of my realm of control, then I need to release it to God. What a freeing feeling! I don’t have to make sense of it or try to control the outcome. God will clear my path and bring me to where I need to be, in his own time.

So what Bible verses are/have been precious to you on your faith journey? Please email me([email protected]) your verse plus a short reflection of how this verse has sustained you, or drop it off at the church office, and do so by October 18. I look forward to learning more about how the Bible keeps and sustains you in your living faith.

A name is a very unique thing. When we were named by our parents, they put much thought into that name. Most parents can tell their child how and why their name was chosen. Some of us were named for people who are important in our lives. Our last name tells others something about our history, our clan. Our name is an identifier. It makes a difference in who we are and how we live.

So, as we think about this verse, two questions that are good to contemplate are these – What does it mean to be

But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

Isaiah 43:1

This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. It reminds us of our relationship to God – God has called each of us by name; we are God’s – through our baptism. We are beloved and precious. We are approaching your Affirmation of Baptism, a reminder of that calling and claiming.

named by God? And what difference does it make in my life? These are questions I pose to you, our new confirmands, but they are also questions for each of us to consider. And as we ponder our answers, we need to remember how very beloved and precious we are in God’s eyes. We were formed by God. We were called by name. We are God’s children. The response to that love is surely joy and thanksgiving.

From the Scrip Table...

Now is the time to get into the 'Scrip habit' and grow your account for

next summer's trip. To get started, simply stop at the Scrip table any Sunday morning and buy a gift card for a purchase you are going to make anyway. Need gas? Buy a Kwik Trip (10%) or Holiday (3%) card (other gas stations are available--just ask at the table) and earn money toward your trip. Need groceries? Cub pays 4% toward your trip. Need to buy specific color pens or a binder for back-to-school? Target cards pay 2% while KMart pays 4%. Then don't forget Subway (3%) or Domino's (8%) for that meal on the go. Also, by planning ahead and ordering Scrip cards for birthday and Christmas gifts or special occasion meals, your account will grow even faster! With so many retailers to choose from, there are only positive reasons to 'think Scrip'!

Faith Stepping Stones retreats focused on looking back, assessing the present, and looking forward as families begin this busy transitional year. Creation Care Tip: There is a free residential electronics recycling collection on October 1, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rice

County Highway Shop in Lonsdale (110 5th Ave. NW in Lonsdale) for Rice County residents only. Items accepted include televisions; computer monitors, towers and printers; fax machines; video games and devices; and rechargeable devices such as cell phones, MP3 players, and iPods. No appliances such as fans, toasters, hair dryers, electric frying pans, and blenders, or major appliances, garbage, or household hazardous waste will be accepted.

Slavery is as much a moral issue today as in the past. The ELCA has a learning series called "Human Trafficking: Our Call to Care and Action. There is even a National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Christians are called to arm ourselves with awareness and knowledge so we can stand with our brothers and sisters who are enslaved and help them to gain their freedom. So --- we will begin to increase our understanding this month and continue to study this urgent issue during the winter. With God's help we will try to learn what we can do to make a difference.

Many thanks to Jim Holden for serving as

chair of the Mission and Justice Committee since 2004, to Mary Carlsen, Carol Cole, and Dottie Hammer for serving during the transition, and finally to Paula Mathison for taking on the job going forward. God's blessings to you and thank you for all that you give! Do not miss the October Mission and Justice forums on the shockingly timely topic of Human Trafficking/Slavery. It seems surprising enough that this is still such a serious problem -- about 30 million people are in slavery -- but it is even more shocking that it is occurring so close to us. This is a problem in our state! To increase our awareness and understanding of this issue, the Mission and Justice Committee invites you to attend three presentations between worship services on Sundays in October: October 2 — Amy Hartman will speak about her work with Cherish Our Children, an organization which works with congregations to stop the sexual exploitation of children and youth. This organization is an affiliate of the ELCA. You can learn more about this organization at www.cherishchildren.org. October 9 — Deb Lustig, Criminal Justice Intervention Program Coordinator and Legal Advocate of the Hope Center in Faribault, will speak about the work her organization does to directly support victims of violence in Rice County. October 16 — David Townsend, a police officer in South St. Paul, will tell us about victims of trafficking in our area.

From the Mission and Justice Committee Vision Statement: Since we believe that service is both an obligation and a privilege of the Christian life,

we seek to provide opportunities for Bethel members to learn about the needs of others in our world and to put their knowledge into action, heeding Christ's call to "Love your neighbor as yourself."

From Our Mission Interpreter... By Lois Stratmoen

Attention Bethel Bicyclists Be sure to use our handy dandy bike racks on the south side of the admin wing when parking your bikes at Bethel - Thanks!

X Congregation special offerings

X Small groups – women’s groups, Bible studies, Sunday schools, etc.

Together, the SE MN Synod raised $100,000. Thanks to everyone in Bethel who helped make this happen.

Kiomboi will train teachers. Nurses will be trained at Iambi Hospital in Nkungi village. This project will create the Singida University College, which will be affiliated with the other Lutheran institutions in Tanzania through the Tumaini University system. The system also includes: Iringi University College, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College, and Makumira University College. The university will have lasting impact on the Singida region, where the Central Diocese is located and one of the poorest parts of Tanzania, as well as on the whole country. Health care will be improved by an influx of trained

nurses. New teachers will prepare young people for higher education. These efforts will bring new hope to our partners in Christ.

The Details: The $100,000 offering will give a tremendous boost to the development of Singida University. The funds will be used for necessities such as technology improvements, a computer center, a library, staffing needs, and other capital improvements. X It is anticipated that the program at

the College of Education will be a 3–4 year program. We expect there will be 35 students enrolled in each of several classes, beginning in 2012.

X The nurse training program will last 2–4 years. They hope to enroll 50 nursing students in each group that is entering the program. This program may begin in 2011.

Gifts came from: X Individuals X Congregation budgets

Goal: Raising $100,000 in the Southeastern Minnesota Synod, ELCA to build a better future with our brothers and sisters in Tanzania. Total raised as of September 2, 2011: $100,000!!!! The Southeastern Minnesota Synod partners with the Central Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. Through this partnership and the Walking Three by Three campaign in 1998, we have helped enable the training of 77 new pastors, 122 lay evangelists, and 46 parish workers. This work was centered at the Lutheran Institute at Kiomboi. The Occasion: In 2011, the Central Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania celebrates its 100th anniversary. In December 2011, a delegation from the synod will participate in the anniversary celebration and formally present the gift from the Southeastern Minnesota Synod to the Central Diocese. Those interested in traveling to Tanzania December 1-16 for the anniversary celebration are invited to contact Rev. Craig Breimhorst at 507-334-8821, [email protected], or on Facebook (search “Craig Breimhorst”). The Project: The Central Diocese has a goal of training teachers and nurses. A $100,000 gift from this synod will assist the Central Diocese in transforming the Lutheran Institute at Kiomboi into Singida University. In addition to theological education for pastors, a new College of Education at

LPGM Minute for Mission Linda recently wrote to LPGM, “The excitement is mounting as we consider a partnership with San Lucas church and school in Argentina!”

We can hear the hope and anticipation through the words of her email. The potential for partnering with Christian brothers and sisters somewhere in the world or down the street from where you live are endless. Please pray for your own congregation, your family, or yourself, that God may provide resources for learning new things about mission. http://lutheranpartners.org/

end of a regular paycheck. Information and resources will focus on tools you can use, and introduce concepts that you may never have heard of that can benefit you, your family, and your community. About the presenter: Bethel member Elizabeth Lundstrom started her career as Director of Economic Development in Bottineau County, ND, and has worked in insurance and financial services since 2004. Elizabeth excels at making complicated financial

and insurance information easy to understand and coaching clients to feel empowered in their

decision making. Elizabeth and her husband, David, have started Acuity, LLC which presents training and education seminars to organizations, nonprofits, and businesses designed to address the need of their members for solid financial information.

“The greatest accomplishment at work is to have people feel more relaxed and confident about their finances so they can focus on other aspects of their lives.” - Elizabeth Lundstrom

There is a cost of $15 for materials. Look for the brochure about these classes and a sign-up sheet on the information table in the narthex.

Do you have questions about financial matters? Do you want to learn what to ask when discussing financial advice? Would you like to hear about a simple four category framework for thinking about money? This two-part seminar is an opportunity to do a financial wellness checkup. You visit your doctor or dentist to check on your physical wellness. We have our church for spiritual wellness activities. But we don’t always know where to start, or the next step, in our financial wellness journey. This series is designed to provide a big picture framework as well as more specific information. The sessions will be interactive and informative and you will leave with 2-3 personalized action steps that will help you meet your financial objectives. (There will even be an exercise to identify and prioritize what your objectives are.) Two seminars are available: The Working Years – for individuals/couples about to enter the workforce, people about to leave it, and everyone in between. The Retirement Years – for individuals/couples who are looking to retire during the next five years and those in retirement. The Retirement Years seminar will focus on a practical approach to shifting away from a regular income, including a simplified way to frame your thinking after the

power of God's love. A new book

The library adds another New York Times Bestseller to the shelves this month, Bonhoeffer, Pastor, Martyr, Prophet,

Spy by Eric Metaxas. Who better to face the greatest evil of the 20th century than a humble man of faith? As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times best-selling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer’s life,

A new movie

The Grace Card This is a must-see movie where you can witness the power of forgiveness. This 5 Star, Dove Award movie was released in

theaters in February and now is available on DVD. Come check it out from the Bethel library. Everything in life can change in an instant and it can take a lifetime to unravel. When Mac McDonald loses his son in an accident, the next 17 years of bitterness and pain erode Macs love for his family and leave him angry with God and everyone else. Mac's rage affects his job and the advancement in his career in the police department and creates a combustible situation when he's partnered with Sam Wright, a rising star on the force who happens to be a part-time pastor and a loving family man. Mac's home life is as frightening as anything he encounters on the streets of Memphis. Money is tight and emotions run high as he constantly argues with his wife and his surviving son Blake, who is hanging with the wrong crowd and in danger of flunking out of school. Sam Wright never expected to be a police officer. He has a calling to be a minister like his Grandfather George. But leading a small, start-up church doesn't always put enough food on the table for a young family, so Sam doubles as a police officer. With his new promotion to Sergeant, Sam starts questioning if his real calling might actually be police work rather than being a pastor. Can Mac and Sam somehow join forces to help one another when it's impossible for either of them to look

the theologian and the spy, and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil. Metaxas presents the fullest accounting of Bonhoeffer’s heart-wrenching decision to leave the safe haven of America to return to Hitler’s Germany, and sheds a new light on Bonhoeffer’s involvement in the famous Valkyrie plot and in “Operation 7,” the effort to smuggle Jews into neutral Switzerland. Bonhoeffer is the story of a life framed by a passion for truth and a commitment to justice on behalf of those who face relentless evil. The library ministry team would like to ask everyone to take a close look around their homes to see if there may be any overdue materials that need to be returned. We have several items checked out that are long overdue. Please return them so they can be shared with other patrons. For your convenience, there is a library drop box available after church hours in the east entry.

An investment in older Minnesotans will provide a return that will benefit the state

We have a shared responsibility to care for our elders. While each of us should be planning for the future and saving to the best of our ability, there will always be a need for a safety net to help those who cannot adequately support their long-term care needs. The state should establish a new cabinet-level focus on aging, empowered to consolidate and

From Across the Parking Lot... reorganize programs currently housed in separate agencies and administered by separate entities. Minnesota's older adults deserve to have the best quality care available. The implementation of financing and care delivery reforms such as a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), a long-term care "health home," will enable older individuals to live independently in the community and with a high quality of life.

Pastoral Care At Bethel, we teach, preach, and live the truth that every one of us is loved, valued, and belongs. Our pastoral care team and supporting ministries, such as Befrienders, prayer ministry, home communion, etc., provide care that is confidential, Christ-focused, and spiritual. We desire to be connected to you while you are experiencing peaks and valleys in your walk with Christ. Through the good times as well as through the tough ones, whatever your circumstances, Bethel is a loving family that wants to share God’s love for you. Please contact us by phone if you desire pastoral care. If You Are In the Hospital…. Bethel's pastoral staff would like to be there for you when you are admitted to the hospital or other facility for illness or surgery, but due to privacy regulations, we do not get a call from the hospital when you are admitted. If you would like a pastoral care provider to visit you, please be sure that someone — you or a family member or a friend — calls the Bethel office to let us know of your admission. Thank you for the privilege of sharing the presence of Christ with you in your time of need.

comforting about the circles overlapping. God is present in that "sacred space" where life circles intersect. The cross at that junction of the Befriender symbol reminds us of God's love and grace as we are present to each other everyday. These sacred moments happen all the time in the greetings we extend at church or the grocery store, in the delivery of home communion, in the calls, cards, and visits made to those unable to leave home. Possibilities abound for each of us to be blessed by God's presence as our

Is life linear or circular? If one has a palm-reading, the hand's life line is examined. If one tries

to sort through old photos in a shoebox, a time line helps recollect dates and events. A linear perspective can explain the feeling that life is a roller coaster of ups and downs, of joys and sorrows, and perhaps, at times a runaway ride of loose ends. Now, consider the Befriender symbol atop this column. There is something so complete about each circle and so

I am writing to thank everyone who sent me letters and brought me food during my time of recovery. To the Graff and Cloud family for the fabulous food set up through Mary Nystuen and the shawl brought to me in the hospital by Pam Santerre. The visit and phone calls from Pastor Charlie and Pam were very appreciated. Thank you very much for all the prayers and cards. And the beautiful card from Bethel's Befrienders!

What a Room! If you haven't had a chance to see the newly renovated Fireside Room - be sure to drop in! Thanks to the generosity of WELCA and its garage sale proceeds, the Fireside Room has gotten a much-needed update, including improved closet space, new cupboards, appliances, and dishes. Many thanks to Don Pavek, Ted Schmidt, Carroll Johnson, Bill Lindstrom, Dwayne Cowdin, and Wayne Kivell, who volunteered their time and talents to get

the room completed in time for Rally Day. The WELCA board planned the updates and arranged for the purchases. Bethel staff, WELCA women, and the Folding Angels emptied and cleaned the old cupboards, which are now providing much needed storage in the art room in our Sunday School area. [Did you notice the hooks for bridal gowns?! Thanks, Don!] Many thanks to all who so generously shared time, talents, and treasure for the benefit of all. We appreciate you!
