Requirements for signing your child up for this class: • Has participated in one Parent & Child Class • Toilet trained • Able to listen and follow directions for 30 minutes • Child will be okay without parent or guardian in the pool • Able to hold onto wall for 30 minutes Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills (Must be at least 5 years old) Helps students feel comfortable in the water by: • Enter and exit water safely • Submerge mouth, nose and eyes • Exhale underwater through mouth and nose • Swim on front and back using arm and leg action • Float on front and back • Follow basic water safety rules, and use a life jacket • Explore arm and hand movements Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills Give students success with fundamental skills by: • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side • Exit water safely by using ladder or side • Submerge entire head • Float on front and back • Perform front and back glide • Roll over from front to back, back to front • Tread water using arm and leg actions • Swim on front and back using combined strokes, as well as side • Move in the water while using a life jacket Level 3: Stroke Development Builds on the skills from Level 2 through additional guided practice by: • Jump into deep water from the side • Bob with the head fully submerged • Use rotary breathing in horizontal position • Perform front and back glide • Perform survival float • Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back • Perform front and back crawl • Butterfly – kick and body motion Level 4: Stroke Improvement Develops confidence in the skills and improves other aquatic skills. • Swim underwater • Perform open turns on front and back using any stroke • Tread water using sculling arm motions and kick • Perform front and back crawl • Perform breaststroke and butterfly • Perform elementary backstroke • Swim on side using scissors like kick Level 5: Stroke Refinement Provide further coordination and refinement of strokes by: • Tread water with 2 different kicks • Perform front and back flip turn • Perform front and back crawl • Perform butterfly and breaststroke • Perform elementary backstroke and sidestroke Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency Refines strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over great distances. Level 6 is created with “menu” options that focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses including Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training courses. These options include: Personal Water Safety and Lifeguard readiness. Valley View Middle School Pool EntranceAll daytime pool participants must enter through the main door and sign in. Evening and Saturday participants will enter “Door G,” in the back of the building, West side. Valley View Middle School Pool is a comfortable 87 degrees!During Swim Lesson ClassesParent or Guardian--Children need to be accompanied by an adult during lessons and need to be present in the gallery during lessons.

Class MakeupsThere are no makeups for missed classes. There are no refunds or credits given for missed classes.

Aquatic Cancellation PolicyAlthough most classes run, we reserve the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. To receive a full refund, cancellations must be made at least 7 days before the start of your class; after that, a $5 processing fee will be deducted from your refund. Individuals who choose to cancel after the first session of class will receive a prorated refund with a $5 processing fee deducted.

American Red Cross Lifeguard TrainingClass Fee: $200

This comprehensive course is designed to instruct course participants in the skills and knowledge needed to become a lifeguard. Course candidates will learn how to recognize, prevent, and respond quickly to aquatic emergencies. The course also instructs participants in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and First Aid. Participants will receive certifications in the above – mentioned materials upon completion of attending all class sessions, passing all written exams and water skills and tests.

Prerequisites:• Participant must be 15 years of age or older• Ability to pass pretest. Pretest of 300 yard swim using front crawl with rhythmic breathing and breaststroke. (Must swim 300 yards continuously)• Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7 – 10 feet retrieve 10 pound brick, return to surface, swim 20 yards back to starting point with object, exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.• Certifications received upon completion of course objectives and passing score of 80 percent correct of course final written exam.

American Red Cross GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow isdesigned to prepare 11 to 14 year olds to take Red Cross Lifeguarding certification programs and for future work as lifeguards.

The GuardStart program helps participants build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills that they will need to be responsible lifeguards. Lessons are grouped into five main areas: prevention, fitness, response, leadership and professionalism. Textbook included.

Water AerobicsThis one-hour class is a wonderful way to tone and strengthen muscles while developing cardiovascular endurance and increasing flexibility. By having the natural resistance of the water, participants receive a great workout that is gentle on the joints. No swimming skills necessary for this class. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment.

Water Fitness Cards MUST be purchased at the pools. Please bring your WATER FITNESS CARD to each class you attend.
