Deen de Bortoli Vat 8 Shiraz 2009 Thoroughly delicious rich shiraz. The fruit is fully ripe with dense black currant and dark chocolate splashed with a little cedary oak. Great current drinking.Score: 90/100
McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 This has been a consistent wine over the years and often delivers well above its price point. This is one of the better ones from this vintage.Score: 90/100
Houghton Red Classic 2011 Another cracking combination of cabernet shiraz and merlot. An excellent vintage: spicy and soft with a bright vibrancy bouncing of the palate.Score: 91/100
Taylor’s Shiraz 2012 Supple and vibrant with abundant red fruit characters supported with a creamy vanillin oak. The tannins are supple and the oak ample. Score: 92/100
St Hallett Gamekeepers Shiraz Grenache 2010 The wonderful vintage has impacted on these lower price wines and this soft and generous red blend is right on the money. One the best value wines of the tasting.Score: 91/100
Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Great year for cabernet and this is one of the finest examples. So immensely powerful yet with typical Coonawarra finesse and elegance. Deep and rich with lavish texture coming from the ripe fruit and use of predominantly French oak with a little dab of American. Ripe tannins and fine grained oak feature prominently. There is some typical Coonawarra mint on the nose working with the red berry characters. Will handle extended cellaring.
Score: 96/100
West Cape Howe Cabernet Merlot 2011You simply won’t find many better cab merlot blends than this under $20, full stop. Rich and dark fruit presented with a precise and focused elegance and poise. It’s what this style is all about. Has the richness and depth with admirable intensity yet it all happens so effortlessly. A cracking wine.
Score: 94/100
Deep Woods Ebony Cabernet Shiraz 2011Consistently one of the very best wines in this price point and this is absolutely one of the best. Comes from the ever expanding Peter Fogarty wine portfolio. Fine and balanced with a poise and fruit expression you expect from high priced wines. A class act at this price point.
