At Camp Chameleon, children spend their summer playing, having fun and just getting to

be kids.From its location in Markham Park,

Camp Chameleon encourages the enjoy-ment of the outdoors and teaches children an appreciation for nature. Campers will hike, fish and learn about plants and animals during naturalist-guided tours. Physical activity is emphasized with a variety of non-competitive sports and good old-fashioned games like kickball, wiffle ball, boxball and gaga ball. The camp also promotes participation in creative arts and science projects, music, dance and special events such as camp talent shows. And, of course, it’s not summer camp with Color War!

Campers enjoy daily field trips to local pools and aquatic parks, along with other favorite indoor destinations such as bowling, skating, arcades, movies and museums, to name just a few.

Camp Chameleon offers programs for students from kindergarten through 8th grade, as well as Counselor in Training program for students entering 9th and 10th grades. All elementary school age campers received Red Cross in-structional swimming lessons.

Camp Chameleon offers three sessions running June 10th to August 9th. Flexible weekly schedules are also available. Camp hours are from 8:45am to 4pm Monday through Friday, with early care and aftercare available.

Presented by the City of Weston in partnership with the Weston Philharmonic Society, the Weston Symphony Series brings world-class musicians to our community.

In March, the Symphony of the Americas’ Opera to Broadway featured four internationally acclaimed singers joined the full symphony orchestra for a fabulous performance in celebration of the Symphony’s 25th Anniversary Season with Artistic Director James Brooks-Bruzzese. Under his baton, the maestro took the audience on a musical journey featuring opera music by Wagner, Rossini, Bizet and Puccini with Broadway selections by Rogers & Hammerstein, Bernstein, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The Symphony Series concludes with a performance by the legendary Dallas Brass on Saturday, April 20th. One of America’s foremost musical en-sembles, the Dallas Brass features a unique blend of traditional brass instru-ments with a full complement of percussion. Their reper-toire includes classical mas-terpieces, Dixieland, swing, Broadway, Hollywood and patriotic marches. The Dallas Brass will be joined onstage for one piece by select high school musicians through the Weston Philharmonic Society’s Music in the Schools program.

Best Family EventWeston Winter Safety Expo

Thousands of people gathered at Tequesta Trace Park for the Weston Winter Safety Expo. Organized by the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the evening event showcased rescue

and law enforcement vehicles. On display were an array of police and fire vehicles, including motorcycles,

airboats, Hazmat teams, ladder trucks, and rescue units. A BSO helicopter flew in and landed in the middle of the field, next to a rescue chopper from the U.S. Coast Guard. There was also a Secret Service Presidential Limousine, as well as military vehicles.

In addition to the vehicles, there were exhibits from BSO SWAT teams, Marine Units, Bomb Squads, Mobile Command, U.S. Postal Inspectors, the

DEA, Homeland Security and the U.S. Air Force Bike Team.

The Winter Safety Expo also featured a win-ter wonderland photo area, a D.J., children’s activities, entertainment, and snow cones. But the star of the show this year was the SNOW!

This was the first time this event was held in the winter. The Safety Expo is

traditionally scheduled around Halloween, but this year’s program was can-celled because of Tropical Storm Sandy.

Celebrate the Arts recognizes the tremendous talent of Weston’s visual and performing artists. More than 1,000 guests attended the inaugural event, presented by the City of Weston, Arts

Council of Greater Weston, and Weston Town Center.

Children were en-couraged to exhibit their artistic expres-sion at the Young At Art Museum’s open air studio. It featured painting and pot-tery as well as hat and sticker-crafts. Aspiring musicians of all ages could try out violins, drums, trum-pets and other instruments at the “playing patch.” The Weston Art Guild pre-sented an exhibition by its incredibly talented members. These local artists work in a variety of mediums such as oil and acrylic on canvas, watercolor on paper, some acrylic work on wood, photography, stained glass and sculpture. Attendees were give the opportunity to discover their hidden artist at the event. Almost everyone left his or her mark on the giant graffiti wall.

Celebrate the Arts also promotes the performing arts in our community. Drama, band and chorus students from both Cypress Bay High School and The Sagemont School performed throughout the afternoon.

For the past ten years the Weston/West Broward Chapter of JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options) has hosted the Michelle Goldstein Spirit of Life Luncheon. It honors those

women who are making a difference in the lives of JAFCO’s children.

JAFCO is a one-of-a-kind organization providing programs and services for at-risk children and their families including family preservation, foster care, adoption, emergency shelter, group home, independent living, and men-toring special needs programs.

The Spirit of Life Luncheon is named in honor of Michelle Goldstein, a young woman whose life was tragically ended during the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center. It was created to celebrate her life and love of children. Michelle had been actively involved with JAFCO.

The annual luncheon takes place at Weston Hills Country Club. It features a fabulous boutique with unique vendors followed by a delicious lunch. Other highlights include the Godparent Pinning Ceremony, silent auction and raffle. All proceeds benefit JAFCO.

The Churrasco Skirt Steak is a 10 ounce steak, marinated to perfection, with chimi churri sauce and served with Spanish rice and sweet plantains.

Even the side dishes balance both cultures with tostones as an option, along with a baked potato or broccoli, among others.

Thursday night is Latin Night at Sunset Grill with live music and salsa and meringue dancing, along with a paella dinner and carafes of sangria.
