Nobody knows a town better than the people who live there. And this year more than 15,000 people shared their wisdom about our city — from the standout actor of the year to the go-to day care centers and the best wine list. The fact that a record number of voters participated

DRUNKEN DESSERTrum caKe at spice island grill10 N. Sierra Madre St., 473-8280, spiceislandgrill.com

You can clear your sinuses taking in the rum aroma of this dense, chocolaty cake, which should practically be served as a cocktail. The designated eater might want to bring a designated driver.

ENTREE SALADmediterranean coBB at la Baguette french Bistro4440 N. Chestnut St., 599-0686, labaguettefrenchbistro.com

This always-fresh salad features layered fans of thinly sliced ingredients: herb-roasted chicken, roasted red peppers, Kalamata olives, feta, avocado and egg. Served with a huge crusty roll, it’s a fantastic and filling lunch.

ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT VALUEsushi raKKYo9205 N. Union Blvd., Suite 2-100, 645-8754, sushirakkyo.com

As plate after plate of elegantly prepared sushi is delivered to your table, the price of the quality fish you consume easily surpasses the cost of your $14.95 lunch or $24.95 dinner. Sushi Rakkyo also offers many fully cooked options for diners not fond of raw.

DARE FOOD crave Burgers7465 N. Academy Blvd., 264-7919, craverealburgers.com

Some might say you can’t put three kinds of pork on one burger, but Crave ran with that challenge to create the 3 Little Pigs, which includes pulled pork, bacon and ham. Real daredevils must try the famous Luther, which uses donuts in the place of buns.

BLIND DATE LOCATIONrico’s cafÉ and wine Bar322 1/2 N. Tejon St., 630-7723, poorrichardsdowntown.com

Both public and romantic, Rico’s has a way of making first meetings comfortable. Keep it casual with coffee, perhaps move on to dinner and wine, and if all goes well, stay late for live music.

EXPERT PICKSTHEME PARK EXPERIENCEmY Big fat greeK restaurant7605 N. Academy Blvd., 260-7300, eatmoregreek.com

Diners with heart conditions should be advised: This restaurant stages startling stunts of plate breaking and fire breathing. About once an hour, the servers also take to the aisles to dance, often bringing in patrons to participate. It’s all-out fun.

KNOW-IT-ALL BARTENDERnathan windhamThe Blue Star, 1645 S. Tejon St., 632-1086, thebluestar.net

Few bartenders in Colorado have the knowledge of obscure batch spirits and mixology skills that Windham has. Blue Star stole Windham from the upstairs bar at the Red Martini. Ask him for a Harry’s Pick-Me-Up, a pre-Prohibition cocktail that’s not on the menu.

GUTSY MOVEeXpansion of the currY leaf321 N. Tejon St., 447-0608, curryleafrestaurant.com

Sisters Lara Linander and Lana Hillstrom have moved from a quiet little shop on Wahsatch Avenue to a huge space across the street from Poor Richard’s. We hope their dynamic, healthful Sri Lankan cuisine will fill the tables.

BURGERJucY lucYConscious Table, 26 E. Kiowa St., 636-3276, conscioustable.net

This was a tough choice. Summit’s $27 Wagyu burger tastes almost like a different animal. But Aaron Retka’s buffalo burger ($12), which is stuffed with cream cheese and aged cheddar, proves more dynamic and certainly a better value.

Food Editor For thE gazEttE & coloradosprings.comCHEF TO KEEP AN EYE ONdaVid tErrEllCrowne Plaza, 2886 S. Circle Drive, 576-5900, cpcoloradosprings.com

The executive chef at the Crowne Plaza hotel for 14 years, Terrell has taken first place at the Glass Slipper Ball two consecutive years. This is not to be taken lightly, since the top chefs in town compete for the honor. His passion for culinary art has been fostered since he started baking at age 2. He has been cooking professionally since he was 16 years old. He received associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in culinary art from Johnson and Wales University in Miami and Providence, R.I.

CUBAN SANDWICHcaFé corto115 Kiowa St., 577-4347, cafecorto.com

Ben Gallegos-Pardo, along with his mother and wife, has created a cozy coffee shop that features a small menu highlighting Hispanic dishes. The Cuban sandwich is a standout, with a mound of slow-cooked shredded pork piled on slices of ham inside a sturdy bun. Dill pickle slices are scattered over the pork, which is topped with a slice of Swiss cheese. A press in the sandwich grill melts the cheese and crisps the outside of the bread. Be sure to grab extra napkins to catch the juices from this tasty treat.

DESSERT CLUBdiVadomfacebook.com/DivaDOMClub

Katie Stedman wanted to find new girlfriends after she relocated to Colorado Springs from Austin, Texas. So she created this club. She finds a place where like-minded women (read: girls who love sweets) can meet the first Tuesday of each month. It’s been wildly popular. Events are announced on Facebook, where reservations and payments are taken.

CHOCOLATE CLUBthE piKEs pEaK chocolatE tastErs clUB481 Colorado 105, Monument, 313-9484

The club focuses on all things chocolate. Monthly meetings cover chocolate education, introduction to artisans and brands from across the U.S. and Europe, chocolate swap meets and, of course, tasting and exploration of exciting new chocolates. Private, members-only events are held several times per year.

CREATIVE TRUFFLESstEVE WEBErWalter’s Bistro, 146 E. Cheyenne Mountain Blvd., 630-0201, waltersbistro.com

As executive chef, Weber has elevated the cuisine at this award-winning restaurant to new levels. He especially shines in the pastry area, where he handmakes exceptional chocolate truffles. He won first place in the dessert category at the Glass Slipper Ball for his stunning truffle slippers.

PIEthE cornEr caFé7 E. Vermijo Ave., 520-1843, cornercafecs.com

Virginia Smoot, who with husband Bob owns the little eatery, has a special way with pies. One of the best parts of dropping by for a slice of pie is that you never know what flavor will be in the case. It doesn’t matter, since they are all excellent, especially the coconut cream.

COOPERATIVE KITCHENgotta loVE it! KitchEn2521 W. Colorado Ave., 322-7143

Debbie Downing has created a place for small food manufacturers to get their products made in a commercial kitchen. She rents kitchen space for people to make homemade goodies like wedding cakes, garlic butter, salsa and soup mixes. There’s also a small retail space where you can buy the products.

COFFEE CLASSr&r coFFEE caFé11425 Black Forest Road, No. 6, 494-8300, rnrcoffeecafe.com

It’s an understatement to say that Ryan Wanner, the owner and coffee roaster at R&R, is obsessed with all things coffee. Get him started on the topic of coffee bean-roasting times, and you could be looking at a couple of hours of conversation. That’s why he loves his cupping classes, where he educates on how to become a java connoisseur.

Maybe it’s chairing a committee to raise funds for the soup kitchen or a capital campaign. He is Colorado Springs’ historian, and his new buildings are reproductions of the past seen through an artist’s eyes.

With its stately, inviting presence in downtown Colorado Springs, this historical building dazzles inside and out — thanks, in part, to several restoration projects over the years. But there was a lot of raw mate-rial to work with in this 1903 Italianate building, which was designed by A.J. Smith and originally served as the El paso County Court-house: elaborate stone carvings and columns, a majestic clock tower, intricate ironwork, faux-marble columns and a charming birdcage elevator that still works.

MOST SLINGS AND ARROWS IN THE NAME OF ARTthe olYmpic mUralKim Polomka had no idea what he was in for when he accepted the commission, in mid-2011, to paint an image to tout the city as home to the U.S. Olympic Committee. Not everyone supported the project, and the celebrated muralist took considerable heat. All for art.

MUSICAL MEMORIALJ-am celeBration: a mUsical gathering for John-aleX masonJohn-Alex Mason’s sudden death in October sent a profound ripple of grief through the music community and beyond. In January, friends, fans, and local and national musicians came together to pay tribute to the blues singer and guitarist, who was just 35 at his death. Music bound them, soothed them and reminded them of the joy Mason devoted his life to create.

STAR ON THE RISEJosep caBallÉ-domenechMusic director, Colorado Springs Philharmonic

It’s tough to start a new job, especially when your predecessor retired beloved. Still, Colorado Springs Philharmonic music director Caballé-Domenech handled it with aplomb when, in May, he took the baton from longtime director Lawrence Leighton Smith. His driving conducting style, out-of-the-box ideas and soft-spoken but charismatic manner promise great things as he settles into his new city.

best big-ticket blockbuster: “dralion”

NEW THEATER EXPERIENCE “the storY proJect”Marmalade at Smokebrush, 219 W. Colorado Ave., Suite 210, 444-1012, smokebrush.org

It’s a tough assignment: Create theater that’s brand-new to the area. Co-founders Sharon Friedman and Warren Epstein did it with this homage to NPR’s popular program “The Moth.” The personal stories — all true, by the way — are riveting.

BIG-TICKET BLOCKBUSTER “dralion”World Arena, 3185 Venetucci Blvd., worldarena.com

You can’t get much bigger than Cirque du Soleil, which consumed World Arena with acrobats, a 20-foot-tall set piece and music worthy of a night at the opera. And the community excitement of seeing it here was palpable.

ARTIST ON THE RISElorelei BecKstromModbo/S.P.Q.R. galleries, 17B and 17C E. Bijou St., 640-5282

A veteran of the legendary outsider gallery Rubbish, this painter has been on the scene for a while. But in the past year, I’ve seen Beckstrom’s storytelling, visual language and basic technique ripen into something considerably more moving, curious and resonant than something simply destined to hang over the couch.

PLAY“Joe tUrner’s come and gone”TheatreWorks, Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Director Clinton Turner Davis and a cast of remarkable actors created one of the strongest performances I’ve seen this year. It was at times powerful, at times sweet. The August Wilson classic was paced beautifully and rendered with deeply human colors, good and bad. Riveting.

ACTORchristopher lowellThere was a lot of competition for this category this year, but it was hard to top the work of Lowell, who yearned, connived, condemned and finally collapsed under the weight of his deeds as Shylock in TheatreWorks’ production of “The Merchant of Venice.” The veteran actor, who many know best for his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin, was fearless, fiercely making the role his own.

ACTRESSalYsaBeth clements mosleYIf you go to local theater, you likely know this actor/director’s work. But you remember it because she consistently brings authenticity and nuance — even a gritty elegance, when required — to her roles, which this year included Springs Ensemble Theatre’s “Coronado,” Star Bar Players’ “Bug” and recently, “Empty Plate at the Cafe du Grand Beouf.” She does troubled ladies well, but my favorite this year had to be her brief but memorable appearance in “Empty Plate.” Her Louise shimmered with tenderness and fragility. Amazing.
