Prayers have been answered for Harry and Delores Green. The First Presbyterian Church minister and his wife have been named Mr. and Mrs. Warren County.

“We were high school sweet-hearts,” said Delores. “We’ll be mar-ried 50 years on Sept. 23.”

Harry was ordained in 1974 and has been preaching for over 40 years. Delores taught school for 30 years, including at William Biles and Hickory Creek.

It’s a prevailing thought that being a preacher is tough, being a preach-er’s wife is tougher. But Delores says it hasn’t been especially difficult.

“I feel like there are so many more pluses to being a preacher’s wife than negatives,” said Delores. “One of the main pluses is people will like you, if for no other reason than you’re the preacher’s wife.”

Delores is in her second year of retirement and says the classroom still holds a special place in her heart.

“People ask me if I miss it, and yes I do miss teaching,” said Delores.

She may be best known during her tenure at Hickory Creek as the teach-er who brought her dog to school.

“It started with me taking him one day as a reward for the kids and it grew from there,” said Delores. “It made the classroom more like a home environment. The kids loved

him. He was like having a teddy bear who would show a little affection back.”

Harry began his career in the church when he did seminary work in Memphis from 1970 to 1974. This was during Elvis mania.

“We did get to go to one of his

concerts,” said Harry.Added Delores, “Back then, we

had no money and we weren’t going to go, but we had friends who pretty much forced us to go so we did. Now I’m sure glad they forced us to go see Elvis.”

Harry has been the minister at First Presbyterian since November 2011. At one point in his career, he was the preacher of two churches at the same time, Cumberland Presbyterian in Sewanee and Cowan Presbyterian.

“I took the same notes, but I never preached the same sermon,” said Harry. “I’d preach in Sewanee first. Coming down the mountain, I’d always think of how I could change something to make it sound better.”

Being a minister can lead to a hectic schedule. Harry says on one Saturday he did two funerals and a wedding, but that’s been the only time he’s had a funeral and wedding on the same day.

“Funerals are not always sad,” said Harry. “For some, it’s a relief for the family that their loved one is done

with the pain and suffering. For those who have faith, it’s not a terrible time.”

Harry said the church is not only a place to worship, but also a place to develop an extended family of sup-port.

“I feel sad for so many kids in our community who live in families who don’t go to church,” said Harry. “They don’t have that extended com-munity of people who care about them, who support them, and want to see them do well.”

Harry and Delores are the parents of three grown children, who are all married. They are Troy and Margie Green, Bryan and Andrea Green, and Ginger and Mark Moore. They have four grandchildren, McKenzie and Harrison Green, and Connor and Austen Moore.

Finishing second for Mrs. Warren County is Helen Martin. Third is Johnnie Davis.

Finishing second for Mr. Warren County is Jimmy Zavogiannis. Third is Gary Prater.

bank teller

Lisa GarrisonWhen it comes to Lisa Garrison, you

can bank on her dependability. That’s one of the reasons she’s been

named best bank teller by the Southern Standard.

Garrison has a 37-year banking career that began in 1979 with City Bank.

“I started work here the week after I graduated from high school,” said Lisa. “I see a lot of people and that’s the part of the job I like the best. I have a bunch of cus-tomers who mean a lot to me.”

The bank has changed hands over the years from City Bank to Union Planters to its present ownership of Regions Bank. Lisa has handled other duties before becoming a teller.

She started in data processing, a job

that entailed processing and balanc-ing transactions. “It all has to balance at the end of the day,” said Lisa.

Lisa is an active member of Central Church of Christ. She also volunteers with Main Street McMinnville. She supports her husband, Randy, in all of his civic duties, which includes the Breakfast Rotary Club.

“I do give a lot of help to Breakfast Rotary,” said Lisa. “They joke and say I should be grandfathered into the club.”

Lisa and Randy are parents to two boys, Ross and Reed. Ross lives in Cookeville with his wife, Lacy, and Reed just graduated from WCHS in May. His plans are to attend Motlow.

Finishing second is Donna Gross. Third goes to Rita Ramsey.

Dreaming of sticking your toes in the sand on a tropical Caribbean island while sipping a cool umbrella drink? Vania Jackson of Sunny Paradise Travel can make that happen. That’s why she has been voted Best of the Best travel agent by the readers of the Southern Standard.

“I really appreciate it,” Vania said upon learning of the honor.

Vania said she got into being a travel agent because she loves traveling so much. A native of Bulgaria who came to America by way of Germany, she has visited 45 countries and looks forward to traveling.

“I enjoyed it so much myself that I thought I should start doing it profession-ally,” Vania said of becoming a travel agent. She has recently achieved the sta-tus of Accredited Cruise Councilor.

As for using an agent rather than book-ing a vacation by yourself, Vania said

there are advantages to going through a professional.

“Even booking a cruise is not so easy,” Vania said. “You should really leave it to

a professional so all you have to do on vacation is relax and have fun. I can even get better deals on cruises since I know when the cruise lines offer the best deals.”

Vania operates her business out of her home in Morrison. She can be reached at 1-615-785-0484.

Along with booking any trip imaginable, she will be offering

package deals on three trips this year. The first is Sept. 16-18 and is a bus trip to Helen, Ga., for Octoberfest. The other two are Oct. 1 and Oct. 15 respectively and will be western Caribbean cruises which will include a chartered bus and the five-day cruise all for one low price. She hopes to have a bus full again this year for their trips.

KP’s McMinnville Lanes collected a turkey as they call it in bowling terms, winning three cat-egories in the Southern Standard’s Best of the Best contest.

KP’s rolled a strike, taking first place in best hamburger, best location to have a birthday party and best waitress, awarded to Christy Perry.

“We offer a family atmosphere, a really great arcade, pool tables, air hockey, darts and rooms for birthday parties or whatever occasion,” Betty Perry of KP’s said.

The bowling alley has been under the leader-ship of new owner and life-long bowler Kent Perry since early this year. His wife, Betty, who is also an accomplished bowler, rolled a 299 recently (missing a perfect 300 on the last frame).

She has upgraded the concessions area of the facility which is located just off the bypass off Mullican Street. The bowling alley now offers items like large macho nachos which are chips loaded with lettuce, seasoned ground beef, nacho cheese, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos and is served in a pizza box. KP’s also offers cold beer and a large array of eating options includ-ing the Best of the Best burger.

Their summer hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Tuesday, 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, 3 to 10 p.m. Thursday, 3 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday and closed Mondays.

Finishing second and third were: Hot Wheels and Jungle Jym for birthday parties; Tammy’s Market and Prater’s for hamburgers; and Brittany Womack from Mud Bums and Hannah Johnson from J’s for waitress.

Gail Melton, hairdresser at Head to Toe Salon, received the Best of the Best nod, and was delightfully enlightened. During the interview, she realized this was her golden anniversary with 2016 marking her 50th year in her chosen vocation.

She started at Evelyn Stubblefield’s beauty school when she was 16, and was licensed at 17.

“I said it’s about time. If I waited much longer, I’d be dead,” said Melton of getting Best of the Best.

She says she loves her job, and enjoys interacting with people. The highlight of her day is she makes her clients feel better, with her sense of humor evi-dent.

One client said, “If you want to have a laugh, stop by and see Gail.”

Melton has no plans to retire because she would miss her clients too much.

“I started with some clients when they were in their 20s and they have become like family,” said Melton.

Head to Toe Salon is located at Plaza Shopping Center, and Melton does haircuts, colors, high-lights and just about anything relating to hair. She can be found at the shop Wednesday thru Saturday, and has set appointments, but will be happy to try to work in a cli-ent.

Melton enjoys working with flowers and plants, reading

and enjoying her grandchildren. She is a member of Mt. Leo Church of Christ.

“I thank everyone for coming to me and supporting me all these years, and it feels great to receive this honor,” said Melton. “Everyone needs that encouragement some time in their life.”

Stylist Jenifer Evans received second place. Kristi Cantrell is third.

Elaine’s Hair Design has been com-pared to Truvy’s beauty shop from the movie “Steel Magnolias.” Owner Elaine Rains takes that as a compli-ment as the ladies in the movie had a lot of fun interacting with each other, often addressing serious issues.

The shop received two Best of the Best nods this year, best beauty salon, and place to hear local gossip.

Rains has been a hairdresser for 46 years, and her associate Audra Campbell has been with her 10 years.

The shop is located at 85 Bratten Street and is a haven for clients of all ages.

“Many of my clients have been com-ing to me for many years, and we have gotten to be like family,” said Rains. “Of course we are always wel-coming new folks in also.”

She and Campbell take appoint-ments for perms, colors, waxing, hair-cuts, and also have a tanning bed for clients. They are open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Rains is not so sure about the local gossip honor, but she finds humor in

the recognition.“I tell people if you need to learn

something, just drop by,” said Rains. “We are a gathering of women distrib-uting vital information. Yeah that’s what we are.”

“We appreciate all of our customers, and we are very thrilled with the hon-ors, especially after all these years,” said Rains.

She is joined with Kings Den, sec-ond place; and Triple M, third place.

Local gossip honors go to Youngbloods, second; and Depot Bottom Country Store, third.

Most people love their pets and want the best for them. According to our Best of the Best poll, Elite Kennels provides the best grooming service for dogs. Mike and Phyllis Turner opened their doors for business in 1997 at their 1389 Starlight Road location.

“We accidentally got into the business,” said Phyllis. “I was showing dogs, and we had runs for our dogs at our house, and people start-ed asking me if I would keep their dogs for them while they were on vacation. Of course I did, and the busi-ness grew from that.”

The Turners employ two full-time, experienced groomers who provide excellent service to their cus-tomers. They also have a thriving board-ing business with 32 dog runs available. The kennels are cooled, and each run has an outside space for the animals.

“I tell folks they don’t have to get a full

cut. They can bring them by for a trim, or even get their nails clipped,” said Phyllis.

They provide services to all types and sizes of dogs. Mike is in charge of the boarders, and he takes care of their dietary needs, and takes them on daily walks if requested.

“We do get attached to the dogs, and we learn to love them all,” said Phyllis. “They are just like people. They each have their own personality.”

On being named Best of the Best dog groomer, they are both very appreciative of the accolade.

“We appreciate it so much, and are very appre-ciative of our customers,” said Phyllis. “We have the

best customers, who take care of their dogs. We enjoy what we do, and it is such a blessing to us.”

Second-place honors go to Happy Tails. Third place is Furry Tails.

When Patty Boyd retired from her job at Ben Lomand Connect in 2013, she didn’t retire from working. She just changed her career path. She opened Stitches Crafts and Embroidery inside Korner Market, the fami-ly business she operates with husband Terry.

Because of her creativi-ty and hard work, she has earned the Best of the Best embroidery title. Boyd previously did her creating at home, but decided to move to the current location.

“I really enjoy working with people. It’s conve-nient here and I can set my own hours,” said Boyd. “I am enjoying working in this environment.”

She can monogram just about anything, and she does a lot of baby items, such as blankets, burp clothes, onesies and cloth-ing items. Lots of adults are enjoying monograms, and she does shirts and

sweatshirts in all sizes. Boyd is happy to look at an item to see if her machine will accommodate it, and has some items ready

to go in the store. Just recently she has

added heat transfer vinyl designs that she can also apply to a variety of items. She has stock designs, and can create custom work for custom-ers.

“I pride myself on the fast turnaround time, which is hardly ever more than two or three days,” said Boyd. “I pro-vide quality workman-ship, fast.”

When asked her feel-ings on the honor, she said, “I was surprised

and very honored I have so many caring customers, and I have to say I feel very blessed.”

Second-place honors go to Et Cetera, with third place going to Kathy’s of McMinnville.

Always in Bloom, located at Plaza Shopping Center, has received Best of the Best flower shop honors. The colorful shop is filled with beautiful decorative items appealing to shoppers of all ages.

They are not just a flow-er shop, although they do custom-made fresh and silk arrangements. Every display tells a different story with numerous décor items. A visit to the shop during the holiday season is a treat in itself, as the shop is completely transformed into a winter wonderland.

Sheila Young is the owner, and she has been at the current location 13 years.

“It’s a wonderful voca-tion, that lets me work with a variety of people both in their happy times and in their sad times,” said Young. Always in Bloom offers a wide range of funeral services, and Young and staff are always ready to share

their expertise. Young is assisted by the very talented

Tammy Rhea Magourik, who has been involved in the floral industry for 25 years.

Part-time employee Pamela Davis provides wonderful customer ser-vice.

Together they provide an assortment of gift items, pre-made floral arrangements, home accessories to go along with their purses and jew-elry selections. They also provide a delivery service to customers.

“I am very humbled with this honor,” said Young. “I certainly appre-ciate every one of my cus-tomers and anyone who took the time to vote for

us. We try to treat people like we would like to be treated.”

Second-place honors go to All-O-K’sions Flowers and Gifts. Third goes to Tiger Lily Boutique.

Morrison Ruritan was organized in July, 1967, and has earned the title of Best of the Best Civic Club. The group places emphasis on community service, goodwill and fellowship, and is part of a national organization with nearly 30,000 members throughout the United States.

The Morrison group works diligently on numerous proj-ects. They sponsor the Little Miss Valentine Pageant, Morrison’s Citizen of the Year award, Teacher of the Year award, Top 8th grade students awards, Patriotism awards (approximately 20 this year), a banquet for Morrison Fire Department, a health fair, high school scholarships, Fourth of July festival, youth softball to approximately 500 chil-dren, a food booth at the fair, and distrib-utes between 60-65 food baskets at Christmas to those in need, just to name a few of the organization’s activities.

Group member Kay Holt says the group’s main focus is giving back to the community so the organization holds

benefit suppers to help sick individuals financially.

“We’ve hosted many, many benefits,” said Holt. “We donate all the items. A lot of people don’t realize that. Ruritan

members donate all the items so that every penny we raise can go to the person we’re doing the benefit for.”

The organization donates to other worthy causes, including Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Ronald McDonald House and St. Jude’s, partners with Morrison Elementary School, and provides delivery drivers to Meals on Wheels throughout

the year. “We appreciate this recognition,” said

Holt. “It’s an honor.”Morrison Ruritan’s president is Todd

Shewmaker. The group is always looking for new members. Contact Shewmaker at 615-561-3676.

Second place goes to McMinnville Lions Club, with third place taken by Midway CIC.

Working hard to keep Warren County beautiful, Cole Taylor ’s Lawn Care and Landscaping has been named Best of the Best lawn care by the Southern Standard.

“I’m tickled to death,” Cole said upon hearing his lawn care service had been given the accolade. “It means a lot to me.”

Taylor has been working lawn care professionally for 10 years and has two employ-ees.

“I mowed my lawn at home back in high school so I figured I may as well get paid for it,” Cole said of the idea to open his own business. “Plus, I love Warren County so if I can do anything to make it nicer, I’ll do it.”

Taylor said there is more to his busi-ness than just mowing lawns. He also offers landscaping to beautify lawns,

seeding and sodding, leaf removal. “Anything you can do to a yard, we offer it.”

Taylor noted that he offers estimates on one-time mowing or he can offer a seasonal maintenance plan.

“It’s really cheaper to let us mow your grass when you figure up what it takes you to maintain your own lawn for a summer,” Cole said. “Plus, we’re the ones doing the sweating then.”

Taylor added that he is fully insured so if a rock accidentally gets thrown through a window, you’re cov-ered.

Anyone interested in having Cole come work for them can call him any-time at 931-607-0728 or 931-939-3484.

Taking second in the balloting is Alamilla Brothers, and third is McMinnville Lawn.

Dr. Wally Bigbee has been named 2016 Best of the Best community volunteer.

“I am very thankful for and apprecia-tive for those that chose to honor me in this way,” said Bigbee.

Bigbee loves nature and lives by the Boy Scout motto of ser-vice to others. By combining those two passions, he has become an advocate for estab-lishing outdoor activities such as walking trails, greenways and parks as a way to encourage people within the community to be active and stay healthy.

“Are you physically active?” asked Bigbee. “By definition, that’s five exercise sessions that are a mile challenge or 30 minutes a day, plus two sessions of lifting weights or body strengthening exercises. Only 1 out of 10 of the American public fit that crite-ria. It lowers blood pressure, helps pre-vent heart failure and helps prevent depression. People that are closed up in dark places all year long have a much higher rate of depression.”

In McMinnville, as well as across the state, Bigbee has worked tirelessly to encourage the establishment of countless outdoor recreational activities while still preserving nature. He currently serves as

chair of Friends of the Greenway, an organization working with city officials to establish a walk-ing trail to connect Sally’s Alley to Ramsey Park and Rocket Park called River Trail East. Do it for the children, says Bigbee.

“The average American stu-dent is outdoors 50 percent of the time their parents were, and they only travel one-eighth the dis-tance their parents did,” he said.

“We used to think that an overweight child will outgrow it. That rarely happens. Generally, overweight children are over-weight adults. We’ve got 30 percent of our children overweight now and not physi-cally active.”

Taking second place for community volunteer is Larry Judkins. Third goes to Lester Cowell.

Here’s an honor Tietgen’s Super Rama might really try to milk.

Super Rama has been named best grocery store by the Standard.

“We’re open seven days a week, 365 days a year,” said Super Rama manag-er Keith Hollingsworth. “We do have abbreviated hours on some holidays, but we are open just to make sure everybody has what they need. People are very grateful on Christmas Day.”

Super Rama has a full line of meat, produce and dry grocery items. The store is also known for its garden cen-ter.

“People get excited when we start having flowers at the first of the sea-son,” said Hollingsworth. “We sell a lot of bedding plants and ferns in the spring. Mums are the big showpiece in the fall.”

Hollingsworth said customers aren’t difficult to figure out. He said they want good quality at a low price. “And they’ll sacrifice on quality to get the best price,” he said.

He recommends getting store brand merchandise instead of name brand as

a way to save money. The Super Rama store brand is Best Choice.

“A lot of times our store brand is made by a name-brand company and just repackaged,” said Hollingsworth.

Super Rama has 20 employees, including some high school students mixed with longtime veterans.

“We have some high-quality kids who work for us,” said Hollingsworth, who noted WCHS student body presi-dent C.J. Hale was an employee there during his senior year.

Finishing second in the grocery store category is Kroger. Third place goes to Save-A-Lot.

Webb House can enjoy its golden years in comfort knowing it has won best senior living facility.

Webb House is a plush, assisted living center approaching its third year of oper-ation. The 46-room facility opened in October 2013 after more than a $5 mil-lion investment from owners Alan and Lora Webb. Rick Webb is the administra-tor.

“We have some great residents and some great families and that really helps us in providing top-quality care,” said Rick, who added Webb House usually has 35 to 40 residents.

Webb House includes all the basics along with a number of luxuries. There’s an entertainment room filled with 12 theater seats that features an 80-inch TV and popcorn maker. There’s also a pool table in that room. Across the hall, there’s a rec room that has tables for residents to do hobbies such as playing cards and quilting. There’s a beauty shop and spa on the premises with a hair stylist who comes once a week. The personal living quarters are spa-cious with most having separate living

room and bedroom areas. There are kitchenettes of various sizes, some with full-size refrigerators and some with mini refrigerators. The kitchenettes are mainly for snacks since all meals are pro-vided. Laundry and housekeeping ser-vices are provided.

In addition to assisted living, Webb House has a separate, secure memory care facility for dementia patients. It fea-tures an outdoor patio area that’s fenced-in so residents cannot wander off.

Finishing in second place is Riverview Terrace and third place goes to McMinnville Boarding Home.

A popular place to watch a ballgame or just go relax for a tasty lunch or dinner, Mud Bums Sports Grill has been voted best of the best for its wings and its sea-food.

“We’re just really glad that the people of Warren County have supported us,” said co-owner Donna Turner who opened the establishment at Northgate just over two years ago along with her husband, Charlie. “It’s hard for a new restaurant to make it but the people here have really helped us and we appreciate them. They come here for good food and good times with a fam-ily-friendly atmosphere.”

As for their wings, Donna said they are a big hit, especially during football season when they move them by the thousands. Mud Bums wings are offered with eight different sauces coating three types of

wings including regular, TKO smoke and homerun battered.

“We also have a big carryout business plus we have 50-cent wing night on

Thursdays,” Donna said.In the area of seafood,

Donna prides their restau-rant for its Cajun catfish. They also have a low coun-try boil on Saturday night which brings in a lot of customers to sample the special.

Mud Bums is open seven days a week and can be

reached at 507-BUMS. Their hours are 3-10 p.m., Monday through Thursday. 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Taking second in the wing category is Prater’s followed in third by Pizza Hut. Taking second in fish and seafood is Captain D’s followed in third by Foutch’s Family Restaurant.

We Are Honored To Be Best of the Best 6 Years In A Row!

Scott & Tera Elkins

McMinnville Jiu-Jitsu Academy brings the highest level of instruction from around the world back home to McMinnville. The acade-my is Southern Standard’s Best of the Best martial arts for 2016.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the world’s most complete, effective, and proven martial art, began in Japan. It was improved upon by the Gracie fami-ly in Brazil. It was introduced to the world via the UFC, and it continues to evolve here in the United States.

Robin Clark, owner and instruc-tor, received his black belt in Brazil after 15 years of training under liv-ing Jiu-Jitsu legend Pedro Sauer and has trained with a Who’s Who list of Jiu-Jitsu masters and MMA fighters.

“McMinnville residents have a real oppor-tunity to train at a school that will give them direct lineage to the Gracie patriarch Helio Gracie, and that is a very rare opportunity,” said Clark. “It’s the equivalent to taking golf lessons from the person who invented golf. MMJJA’S focus is on real self-defense train-ing.”

The academy offers the following classes:Adult Gracie Jiu-Jitsu – Adult classes are for

ages 13-100 years with a focus on defending against violent attacks by an unarmed or armed assailant. Offered is training on a vari-ety of techniques for a variety of different attacks, be it a surprise attack, standing, or

finishing from the ground. Kids Classes – Children’s classes,

ages 5-8 and 9-12, focus on the bul-lying epidemic that is so prevalent today. They will learn how to han-dle a variety of situations dealing with both physical and verbal bul-lying while developing the confi-dence to remove themselves as a target of bullies.

Beginning June 11, the Academy will offer yoga classes every Saturday. Try the first class for free.

Monthly membership is $35.McMinnville Jiu-Jitsu Academy is located at

112 N. Spring Street and can be reached at 931-261-4183 or its Facebook page.

“Our mission is to empower students with techniques that work in real-life situations against a larger, stronger, more athletic man, bully, or predator,” said Clark.

Gary Steele Karate takes second place, fol-lowed by Garrison Martial Arts in third.

Prater’s Bar-B-Que and Catering is the place for steaks, fried chicken and, as the name suggests, barbecue and catering. The business took first place in all four catego-ries in Best of the Best.

Prater’s Bar-B-Que, owned and operated by Gary and Phyllis Prater, can feed thousands at a company picnic or provide a mouth-watering half-rack of ribs, ribeye steak, specialty sandwich, burger, catfish and hand-battered fried chicken for your work-day lunch.

“We make everything from scratch,” said Gary, who has a long back-ground in the culinary arts in general.

With over a decade in the restaurant and catering business, Gary opened his original Morrison restaurant in 1995. The Manchester location opened in August of 2013 and the catering business is still going strong, too.

Since its inception, his business has built a sterling reputation and large customer

and client list. From small gatherings to party receptions to large corporate gather-ings, Prater’s can serve a menu of delicious Southern delights. Gary and the Prater’s

gang travel across the Midsouth for catering jobs, festivals and BBQ competitions. With eight active cookers, Prater’s can serve thousands.

Gary credits his many success-ful years to providing high-quali-ty food to his customers.

“There are no shortcuts taken. It takes time to establish a clientele but once you do, they become

great repeat customers,” said Prater.Rounding out the second and third place

winners respectively were: Mud Bums and Applebee’s for Best of the Best steaks; Chicken Chef and Kroger for Best of the Best fried chicken; Collins River and Mud Bums for Best of the Best barbecue; and High Rollers and Diane Morton for cater-ing.

We would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” for voting for us in the Southern Standard’s Best of the Best Contest.

We thank the Lord, first and foremost for His blessings to allow us to live and work in such a great area. We are always truly humbled by your kind words and for your business. We know you have a choice and with your choice to remain local and supporting family businesses we’re able to keep giving back to our wonderful

Offering a wide selection of sandwich-es to complement its popular menu, J’s Restaurant at Three Star Mall has been named Best of the Best for sandwiches.

“I appreciate being named best of the best for our sandwiches,” said J’s owner Jean-Claude (Junior) Petit upon hearing of the honor.

Junior said his menu features 22 differ-ent sandwiches. “We pretty well offer every sandwich out there.”

Among the most popular is his ham-burgers which include a double burger and the burger basket. J’s is also known for its turkey, bacon and cheese sandwich as well as its tenderloin and BBQ sand-wiches. They have long offered their chuck wagon and Philly cheese steak, both of which are popular choices, as are their buffalo chicken and catfish sand-wiches.

“We’ve added sandwiches here and there over the years just to give more

variety,” Junior said, noting their newest offering, their quesadilla, is very popular with customers. “The quesadillas are sell-ing like wildfire.”

Junior said that combining one of his signature sandwiches along with a side order of Curly Q’s, onion rings or his well-stocked salad bar makes for a very good meal.

Taking second in best sandwiches is Stacked Bistro, and third is Ellie Michellie’s Eatery.

Serving the people of Warren County for nearly a century, High Funeral Home has been voted best of the best funeral home by the readers of the Southern Standard.

High Funeral Home was founded by the late John High in 1925 and has been located in its present spot at 101 College Street since that time. Mr. High moved here from Wilson County in the early 1920s and started his career in funeral ser-vices at Lively Furniture on Main Street. He built the repu-tation of High’s on honesty, integrity and a deep commit-ment to the community – some-thing that still rings true today. High Funeral Home is locally owned and oper-ated.

“We can never make this time in a fam-ily’s life easy, but we do our very best to make it as easy as it possibly can be,” said funeral director Brandon Harris.

A funeral director’s responsibilities are extensive and, according to the National Funeral Directors Association’s website,

comprise “all aspects associated with funeral service.” This can include grief support, arranging and directing ceremo-nies, transporting the deceased, prepar-ing the body, getting pertinent informa-

tion for legal documents, filing the death certificate, and helping prepare death-benefit claims.

“Funerals have changed over the years, incorporating more of a person’s personality into the service and funerals have become more of a celebration of the person’s life,” says Harris. “We want to help them create a perfect memorial for their loved one in any way we can.”

High’s is locally owned and operated by people from right here in Warren County. Mr. High laid a very strong foundation for the present day High’s and it seems the current staff and ownership of High’s is continuing to build on that foundation of excellence for many years to come.

Taking second in funeral homes was McMinnville Funeral Home. Gardens of Memory was third.
