Frilly’s Seafood Bayou Kitchen has beendishin’ up southern Cajun food one canonly typically find in the heart of NewOrleans right outside your door.

Some of their more known specialtiesinclude jumbo shrimp brochette- baconwrapped shrimp stuffed with a jalapeñosliver and jack cheese, alongside lemongarlic butter and dirty rice or theBlackened Catfish St. Charles; toppedwith crawfish and crabmeat in an herbbutter cream sauce.

Frilly’s says it’s all in the sauce. Creole sauces are creamy and full-fla-

vored with the rich use of herbs andspices. Cajun cooking is, generally speak-ing, a countrified version of Creole cui-sine, according to their website.

“When put together the right way, thiswonderful food is a melange of artistryand talent, developed and made possibleby the nations and cultures who settled inand around New Orleans,” their site says.

A fixture in Denton for more than 10years and the food is still bringing us thebest combination of spice and soul.

It’s all about the individual at the SoHoSalon and Heather Walker thinks that iswhat distances them from the otherSalons in Denton and earned them thisyear’s nod as the best salon in town.

“We actually focus more on the individ-ual and the unique beauty in everyone,”Walker said. “We’re not so obsessed withtrends. We’re looking at each person andtrying to build a long lasting relationship.”

The salon, one of the oldest in Denton, has been around for over 20 years. Thecurrent owner Cara Nina Lavender hasowned it the last 15.

Walker said it’s a full-service salon witheverything from any kind of hairstylingand coloring that a customer can think ofall the way to massage, manicure andpedicure.

“We have a full-time makeup artist whodoes an amazing job with airbrush make-up and spray-on tans,” Walker said. “It’s

pretty hard to stump us, if you wantsomething we can probably figure it out.”

Walker said everyone at the salon isproud of the honor and worked hard for along time to make sure they do not juststyle hair but are a part of the largerDenton community.

Walker said the salon is an active par-ticipant in the small business communityand the arts. Almost every piece of art inthe salon was created by a Denton artist.

Walker also touted the salon’s supportfor all people regardless of differences.

“We’re supportive of every kind of per-son. We’ve got all kinds of friends in theLGBT community.

Two years running, Reding MartialArts has been voted the best martial artsstudio in Denton, and owner MarkReding appreciates the people who tookthe time to give him the distinction.

“It’s a people’s choice award. Someonehad to go in there and write our nameout.”

Reding said he was told there was atriple digit separation between himselfand second place and a much closer onebetween second and third.

“To have that many people vote for us Iam overwhelmed.”

Reding chalked up the results to hisdown-to-earth attitude and honest can-dor. He said he is not like the typicalschool and when people come in lookingfor a place to study martial arts, even ifthey do not choose him he strives to helpthem find a place to learn.

Reding said he is always bringing innew people to his gym to train with himand his students to expand their knowl-edge and constantly traveling and learn-ing new things from others.

“A lot of people just run a school. I amout there with them, training with them, seeing different instructors who are betterthan me.”

To keep up that high level of teachingand service, Reding said he will focus onmaking his students better and makinghimself better and being open to learning.

“And what happens happens. I don’tlook at it any other way.”

People of Denton have a few options ofwhere they choose to work out, but TylerRatigan, general manager of LA Fitness,is glad for the people that come throughhis door and appreciative of the 2013 Bestof Denton vote.

“One thing we have to always remem-ber is people have a choice out there,” hesaid.

Ratigan said the award meant moredue to the write-in nature of the forms.

“It wasn’t just a drop down, people hadto put our name in it.”

What separates LA Fitness from theothers? Ratigan said it comes down to thefamily atmosphere.

“And we do have some amenities someother clubs may not offer, like the saltwa-ter pool, racquetball, but all age ranges, men and women, feel comfortable, I thinkthat really bodes well for us.”

Denton folks love getting lost in thelabyrinth that is Recycled Books. Thethree-story book, movie and music storewas picked as best entertainment storefor music and videos for the Best ofDenton.

The distinction, manager Chris Garversaid is an honor.

He touted the great selection the storehas as reason for winning Denton’s vote. Each section is curated by staff who havea genuine interest in the area they work.

“We haven’t changed our policies toomuch in the last 30 years, the store kind

of sells itself. You’d have to drive hundredsof miles to find a store that even comesclose,” Garver said of the 17,000-square-foot store. There are best-selling books,old-school favorites, historical content,VHS, DVDs and music.

“We’ve got everything under the sunbut yesterday’s newspaper,” Garver said.“It’s pretty overwhelming once you’re arein here just how many books and sectionsthere are.”

Garver said the store maintains itsappeal even in this digital age for musicand books because people still like physi-cal objects.

“There is a big different between down-loading the latest book and picking it upand putting it in your hand,” Garver said.He noted the resurgence of vinyl over CDsin his store.

“A lot of days our vinyl will outsell ourDVDs. People like stuff and we have (it). Our prices are pretty good, too, so thatdoesn’t hurt,” he added.

That’s why she and her co-owner, ChrisPrice, offer the technique for people of allages to enjoy right here in Denton.

Pottery is always a fun option but if youare looking for something different, theglass fusion is a great way to spark yourcreativity.

“You cut the glass and melt the colors

together and make your art flush,” Harlesssaid.”It’s really fun and even kids areinterested in making plates.”

The studio does everything they can tocut corners and not pass the expense on totheir customers, including pouring theirown molds.

“We still buy some from vendors butnot as much, as we want our customers tocontinue having affordable fun,” she said.

The studio is available for all sorts ofevents; from hosting a bachelorette partyto a child’s birthday.

“I am very excited we were voted best,”Harless said. “Come in and have somefun.”
