1. Print out the necessary pages from the PDF of the appliquè pattern(s).2. Mark the right side of the pattern pieces so you’ll know which direction to lay the pattern on the fabric.3. Lightly spray the wrong side of the pattern pieces with temporary adhesive spray and allow it to set for a few minutes. 4. Place the pattern pieces on the right side of the fabric and carefuly cut them out. PHOTO 15. Sew the placement stitch on your hooped fabric. PHOTO 26. With the paper still stuck to the right side of the appliqué fabric, spray the wrong side of the fabric with temporary spray adhesive.7. Place the fabric inside the sewing placement stitch so that it matches the stitching line then remove the paper pattern. PHOTO 38. Sew the tackdown. PHOTO 49. Sew the remainder of the design and repeat for any remaining pieces. PHOTO 5

NOTE: The patterns are sized for the designs as they were made. If you resize the design, you will need to resize the pattern the same amount. You can print out the pattern at the normal size then copy it on a copy machine at the changed size, i.e. resize the designs to 80%, resize the printed pattern to 80%.

TIP: When Printing the patterns, make sure that the “Fit to page” option is UNCHECKED in the Print Dialog Box. If this option is checked the printed patterns will not be actual size.

red button on top & white star button under ruffles.

•Special notes for this design: Create ruffles by cutting two strips of tulle measuring 4" x 12" each. Fold each strip in half to create strips measuring 2" x 12". Stitch along the fold of each strip using a long stitch (3.5 - 4.0 mm), leaving long thread tails at each end. Tie the thread tails at one end and ruffle the strip by gently pulling on the bobbin thread of the untied end. When ruffle looks as you want it to, tie the remaining thread tails. Hand stitch the ruffles to the cupcake and cut off excess length if necessary.

small silk roses, ⅛" ribbon tied into a bow, a pink star button, and an assortment of beads including silver seed beads, clear seed beads, iridescent cylinder beads, & iridescent short tube beads.

•Special notes for this design: To add a layer of shiny fabric over the top of the icing, cut the icing appliqué out of fabric and cut the icing overlay out of a transparent, shiny fabric. Lightly spray the wrong side of the shiny fabric with temporary spray adhesive and place it on top of icing appliqué. Place the two pieces into the embroidery design as if it were only one piece. The bottom “scalloped” edge of the icing overlay will not be tacked down; it will simply be a raw edge.



12397-07 Winter Cupcake•Additional embellishments used: Large

clear flower button, an assortment of light blue & white buttons, & silver, clear, & blue beads attached by hand.

•Special notes for this design: To create the puffy look of the icing:

o Stitch color number 3, which will be a placement stitch. If you have precut your icing appliqué fabric, use this line to place your appliqué. If you wish to cut-in-place, simply lay your appliqué fabric over this line covering it completely.

o Stitch color number 4, which will tack the appliqué fabric down. If you did not precut, you will now need to cut away the excess fabric by cutting right up to the tack down stitch.

o Stitch color number 5, which will be another placement stitch. Take a piece of see-through fabric such as organdy or organza with a winter print such as snowflakes as we used in our sample and lay it loosely over the placement stitch, covering it completely. Add a couple of small folds to the fabric and pin the edges well outside of the placement to hold it in place. This piece cannot be precut if you want the wrinkled effect in the finished piece.

o Stitch color number 6, which will tack the loose fabric down. Note that it may be helpful to raise the height of your stitching foot to keep the loose fabric from getting caught by your needle. After stitching color 6, cut away the excess fabric & continue stitching the remainder of the design.



12397-08 Stitch ‘n’ Turn Cupcake•Additional embellishments used:

Cluster Stuff polyester filling.•Special notes for this design: To create

the stitch ‘n’ turn cupcake:o Spray one layer of medium weight

tear-away stabilizer with temporary spray adhesive and adhere it to a hoopable sized piece of fabric. This fabric will become the bottom of your cupcake.

o Hoop these two layers as one.o Precut the top of the cupcake using

the appliqué pattern and place it on your hoop after stitching color #3.

o Continue stitching the design. Before stitching the final color, lay another piece of fabric right side down on top of your embroidered cupcake.

o Stitch the final color. The final color is the seam that stitches the front & back together. Sew this color using thread to match your fabric.

o Remove the hoop from the machine and the design from the hoop. Trim, leaving about ⅛" edge away from the stitching except at the opening. A “tab” has been stitched where the opening is. Use this as your cutting line for this area.

o Turn cupcake right-side out via the opening.o Stuff as desired.o Fold tab inside the cupcake and hand-stitch closed or use a thin strip of Stitch

Witchery to fuse the opening closed.

to be made using felt for appliqué with raw edges. Use the precut appliqué method for best results.

Embellished Borders & CornersLace Instructions

Freestanding Lace with Cutwork InstructionsDesigns 12398-35 and 12398-36 contain a combination of cutwork and freestanding lace. Though it looks complicated it is actually quite simple.

• Hoop two layers of water soluble mesh stabilizer.• Stitch only the first color change, this will stitch a placement stitch. If sewing the border (12398-35) this will be a straight

line. If sewing the corner (12398-36) this will be a right angle corner.• Remove the hoop from the machine but do not remove the stabilizer from the hoop.• Lightly spray the hooped stabilizer with temporary spray adhesive.• Line up either the straight edge or corner of your fabric with this line. Apply pressure to adhere the fabric to the adhesive

sprayed stabilizer.• Return the hoop to the machine and stitch color two which will stitch the majority of the design.• Stitch color three which will stitch the cut line for the cutwork areas.• Remove the hoop from the machine but do not remove the stabilizer from the hoop.• With small sharp scissors, carefully remove the fabric within the stitched cut line. Refer to cutwork guides for which areas

are meant to be cut.• Return the hoop to the machine and stitch the final color change which will nicely cover your cut edges.• Remove excess water soluble stabilizer following manufacturer’s instructions.

SUPPLIES:Embroidery Thread:• Use the same embroidery thread in the bobbin

as the needle.Needles:• Use an Organ 80/12 Titanium needle for

extended needle life.Stablilizer:• Use water-soluable stabilizer or film water-

soluble stabilizer.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS1. Hoop two layers of water-soluble stabilizer.2. Attach the hoop to the machine and select the

design of your choice.3. Stitch the design.4. Remove the hoop from the machine and the

design from the hoop. Trim excess stabilizer from the design.

5. Rinse away remaining stabilizer and allow it to dry.

HANDY HINTS:For Stiffer Lace:• DO NOT RINSE away all of the stabilizer for a

“stiffer” lace. However, do note that the thread may appear a shade darker if stabilizer is not removed completely.

• If you happen to wash too much out, easily re-stiffen by diluting some stabilizer scraps in water and dipping the item in the solution.

For Very Soft Lace:• Cut away excess stabilizer. Remove remaining

stabilizer by rinsing under warm running water until all traces of the stabilizer are gone.

• Note: If lace should become too limp to work with, dissolve stabilizer scraps in warm water and apply to the lace.

Drying Lace:• Lay lace piece with right side down to dry. This

will minimize the tendancy for the lace to curl.

Retro Christmas Patchwork Pillow



Step One: Embroider the fabric.A. Hoop the 12" by 15" white fabric with two layers of

tear-away stabilizer. Embroider your design. Remove the fabric from the hoop, then remove the excess stabilizer.

B. Press your embroidered fabric, then trim to 10" by 7", centering the embroidery design. As you trim, cut 4 2½" squares of white fabric from the excess.

Step Two: Create the borders.The borders are created with paper piecing. Paper piecing is a simple technique that allows you to create intricate piecing without pre-cutting your pieces. You will actually stitch through the paper, then remove it when you are done. With paper piecing, you start with a piece of fabric that is larger than your desired piece. You will trim the seam allowance to ¼" AFTER you stitch each seam. When you finish a border, you will trim it to size. The following instructions walk you through this process step by step.

A. Print two copies of the paper piecing templates.

B. Cut out each template from paper, leaving approximately ¼" around the outside of the rectangle. See Photo 1.

C. Determine the order you want your fabrics to go across your border. Each border is a series of trapezoids. Each fabric piece will need to be larger than the trapezoid pattern piece by at least ½" all the way around.

D. Place the first piece of fabric under the first trapezoid. Make sure it is bigger than the trapezoid on all sides. The fabric should be right side down, with your pattern right-side up on top of it. Pin the fabric to the pattern. See Photo 2.

E. Now take your next scrap of fabric and place it right sides together with the first piece. Make sure that the edge of the fabric is well past the seam line on your pattern. After you stitch along the pattern line, you will flip the fabric out to form the trapezoid, so make sure that the fabric piece is large enough so that it will cover the next trapezoid when it is flipped out. See Photo 3.

F. Sew through the paper and two pieces of fabric along the seam line. Use the guide on the center of your sewing machine foot to sew exactly straight along the printed line. If you have an edgestitch foot for your machine, it is helpful in keeping your stitching straight along the printed line. See Photo 4.

Supplies• Fabrics:o Assorted scrap fabrics, four to five colors

coordinating with your embroidery designo White fabric, cut 12" by 15" (will be trimmed to

10" by 7" after embroidery)o 4 2½" squares of white fabric (If you cut carefully,

you should be able to get these from the trimmings of your embroidered fabric)

o Fabric for pillow back:Pre-quilted fabric – 2 pieces cut 13" by 10"

Or to Quilt Your Own:4 pieces of fabric cut 13" by 10" plus two

pieces of batting cut 13" by 10"o 2 pieces of batting or muslin 12" by 15"

• Notions:o Zipper at least 14" longo 1 ½ yards pipingo 1 piece of quilt batting 12" by 15"o Polyester stuffingo Ribbon and trim scraps – ¼" to ½" wide

G. Flip the project over so you are looking at the backside of the paper. Flip the second piece of fabric back so its right side is showing. Press well. See Photo 5.

H. Flip the fabric back so the two pieces of fabric are right sides together again. Fold the paper pattern back along the stitched line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼". See Photo 6.

I. Fold the paper and fabric back as you had pressed it.

J. Repeat this process for each trapezoid of the border.a. Place the fabrics right sides togetherb. Stitch along the printed linec. Pressd. Trim seam allowance to ¼"e. Fold back in place.

K. When you have stitched all the seams, trim the border to the size of the printed rectangle. See Photo 7.

L. Gently tear away the paper. See Photo 8.

M. Repeat steps C-L for each of the four borders. You will have 2 2½" by 7" strips and 2 2½" by 10" strips.

Step Three: Embellish the borders.A. Place scraps of trim or ribbon as desired onto your

borders. B. Place a piece of tear away

under the fabric strip, and stitch down the middle of each piece of trim to hold in place. Use a couching or piping foot (a foot with a groove in the bottom to make room for your trim) if needed. See Photo 9.

C. Tear away the stabilizer from the back of your borders.D. Trim any excess ribbon so the edges of the ribbon are

flush with the edges of your border.Step Four: Piece the pillow top together and quilt.

A. Sew one of the 2½" squares to the ends of each of the 10" borders using a ¼" seam allowance. See Photo 10.

B. Sew the two 7" borders to the sides of the embroidered fabric using a ¼" seam allowance. See Photo 11.

C. Press back the side borders so your project lies flat, and then sew the top and bottom borders, aligning the seams at the corners. Press sides back.

D. Layer a piece of quilt batting under your finished pillow top. See Photo 12.

E. Quilt (stitch through both the pillow top and the batting) as desired. You can do an allover pattern, or follow the lines of your piecing.

F. Pin the piping or trim in place all the way around the pillow top, overlapping at the ends. See Photo 13.

Step Five: Create the pillow back.A. Cut two pieces of pre-

quilted fabric to 13" by 10" each. Or, quilt your own fabric together and cut two quilted pieces 13" by 10". See Photo 14.

B. Place a zipper right side down along one 13" edge of one piece of your

quilted fabric. The zipper stops should extend beyond the fabric on both ends. Stitch in place with a zipper foot. See Photo 15.

C. Press the quilted fabric back to expose the zipper. See Photo 16.

D. Place the second piece of quilted fabric right-sides together with the first, aligning its 13" edge with the zipper. Stitch in place with a zipper foot. See Photo 17.

E. Press the second piece of quilted fabric back to expose the zipper. Unzip the zipper partway, then pin the open end of the zipper together. See Photo 18.

Step Six: Stitch the pillow front and back together.A. Place the pillow top with trim right sides together with your

pillow back. See Photo 19.B. Pin in place.C. Carefully sew all the layers together, using a piping foot

or zipper foot to make sure you stitch close to your piping. Trim away any excess fabric, trim, and zipper to give a consistent seam allowance. See Photo 20.

D. Turn the pillow right side out through the zipper. See Photo 21.

Step Seven: Create a pillow form.A. Place your two pieces of 12" by 15" batting or muslin

together.B. Stitch around three sides of the rectangle.C. Fill with Polyester batting. See Photo 22.D. Stitch the fourth side of the rectangle shut. See Photo 23.E. Stuff the pillow form into the pillow through the zipper.

EMBROIDER• Refer to Diagram A and embroider the seven chosen

embroidery designs using medium weight tear-away stabilizer. Make sure that your fabric is larger than the listed cut size for each square as the embroideries will later be cut down to this size.

• After embroidery is complete, trim any loose threads or jump stitches.

• Lay a plush towel over your pressing board.• Press each embroidered piece face down with the right

side of the embroidery facing the towel.

CUT• Refer to Diagram A and cut each square

(including the two rectangles and two sides that do not contain embroidery) to the correct size, keeping the embroidery centered.

• One method to cutting these to size and keeping them centered is to make a template by cutting the correct size square out of standard notebook paper.

• Fold the paper in half and then half again.• Open the paper and there will be a fold in both the vertical

and horizontal center.• Cut a slit along both the vertical and horizontal centers,

intersecting in dead center.• Fold back the corners of two opposite sides to create a

center cross hair. Photo 01• Use the cross hair of the folded center to properly align the

paper over your embroidery.• Tape the four corners of the paper to your fabric. Photo 02• Trim your embroidery around the edge of paper template.

HINT: If using this method to create templates label your paper templates to prevent confusion when matching them up with your embroidered fabric later. There is nothing more frustrating than cutting your embroidery to the wrong size!

ASSEMBLE Use ½" seam allowance during assembly unless otherwise noted.

• Referring to Diagram A you will see that the center of this wall hanging can easily be split into three sections:

o Top Section – A, B and Co Center Section – D and Eo Bottom Section – F, G, H and I

• Create the top section by stitching piece B to piece C. Press seam open.• Stitch piece A to the combined BC piece. Press seam open• Set the top section aside. Photo 04• Create the center section by stitching piece D to E. Press seam open.• Set the center section aside. Photo 05• Create the bottom section by stitching piece F to G. Press seam open.• Stitch piece H to I. Press seam open.• Stitch the combined FG piece to the combined HI piece. Press seam open.• Set the bottom section aside. Photo 06• Combine the three sections by first stitching the top section to the center

section. Press seam open. Photo 07• Stitch the center section to the bottom section. Press seam open. Photo 08• Trim both the left and right sides to straighten if necessary.• Stitch the 4" x 25" sides on either side of the center of the wall hanging. Press

seams open. Photo 09• Trim all four edges to square and straighten if necessary.

FINISH• Cut the backing fabric and batting to be at least

2" larger than the pieced quilt front (cut at least 21" x 28"). Using temporary adhesive spray, spray the batting and adhere it to the wrong side of the backing fabric.

• Spray the batting with temporary adhesive spray and adhere it to the wrong side of the pieced quilt top. This will create a “quilters’ sandwich”.

• Quilt as desired. We simply stitched in the ditch.• Trim away the excess backing and batting being

sure to straighten and square as needed.• Bind the edges using your favorite method.

1. Print out the necessary pages from the PDF of the appliquè pattern(s).2. Mark the right side of the pattern pieces so you’ll know which direction to lay the pattern on the fabric.3. Lightly spray the wrong side of the pattern pieces with temporary adhesive spray and allow it to set for a few minutes. 4. Place the pattern pieces on the right side of the fabric and carefully cut them out. PHOTO 15. Sew the placement stitch on your hooped fabric. PHOTO 26. With the paper still stuck to the right side of the appliqué fabric, spray the wrong side of the fabric with temporary spray adhesive.7. NOTE: The patterns are sized for the designs as they were made. If you resize the design, you will need to resize the pattern the same amount. You can print out the pattern at the normal size then copy it on a copy machine at the changed size. For example, resize the designs to 80%, resize the printed pattern to 80%.

Mark My Words 4Bookmark Instructions

1. Hoop a double layer of the stabilizer of your choice. 2. Stitch the Placement Guide Stitch. Be sure to use a

thread color that stands out from the stabilizer. This stitch will be covered on both sides later. Remove the hoop from the machine. See Photo A

3. Spray a piece of felt lightly with Temporary Spray Adhesive. Place a piece large enough to more than cover the Placement Guide Stitch, right side up. Be sure there is a generous allowance of fabric on all sides. See Photo B

4. Attach the hoop to the machine and embroider the design until the final border stitch. Remove the hoop from the machine. Do not remove the project from the hoop. See Photo C

5. Flip the hoop over to work with the back or underside of the design. Spray another piece of felt lightly with Temporary Spray Adhesive. Place a piece large enough to more than cover the Placement Guide Stitch which will be visible on the back side of the stabilizer. Press the felt firmly into place but be careful not to press too hard on the stabilizer as you do not want to shift it in the hoop. Be sure there is a generous allowance of fabric on all sides. See Photo D

6. Reattach the hoop and stitch the final “seam stitch” through both layers of fabric. Finish any embroidery that may be needed to complete the design.

7. Remove hoop from the machine. Clip all jump threads. Remove the fabric from the hoop.

8. Pull both sides of felt away from the stabilizer and, using embroidery scissor, cut the stabilizer as close to the seam stitch as possible. See Photo E

9. Trim away the excess felt to the desired width. Be sure not to trim the seam stitch. For more fun try using pinking shears or decorative edge scissors. See Photo F

Note: Some designs may not join all sides with seam stitches. Project shown is for instructional purposes only and designs may not be included in this pack. Attach ribbons, eyelash trim, or beaded wire to the top for extra flare.
