History of Best Friends Animal Society

Started in the late 1980s

Best Friends reachesacross the nation and around the world, helping localcommunities to rescue animals in distress and to set up, spay/neuter, shelter, foster, and adoption programs in cities across the nation.

They find homes for dogs and cats that are considered unadoptable.

They go to shelters and homes and pick out dogs or cats that have mental or physical problems and place them in a loving home.

Accomplishments They reduced the death rate of animals in shelters

from 17 million a year to about 5 million per year.

They helped during Hurricane Katrina and with natural disasters in saving the lives of animals and placing them into foster homes.

Even though this entirely nonprofit organization, Best Friends Network has built animal sanctuaries all across the U.S.

Best Friends Animal Society is the largest no-kill sanctuary in the US providing international support to the animal welfare movement.
