Dear Friends,Great libraries need great friends and I’m so thrilled to count you as one!

2012 was a tremendous year for the Friends of the Hennepin County Library (Friends of HCL). Collectively, our Friends contributed more than $1.3 million in total support for cultural and educational programs, public awareness, literacy initiatives, technology and collections – including more than $550,000 in direct cash support to the Library. We have many to thank for this, including 6,000 generous members, scores of corporate and foundation supporters and our wonderful local Friends groups, who all worked together to strengthen the entire Library system.

Few organizations in our community can match the scope and reach we have – 41 libraries, 5.9 million visitors, 18 million materials checked out, 200,000 individuals attending free programs – all just within the last year.

What this all comes down to is people. Through your support the lives of Hennepin County residents are being improved and transformed. When I reflect on your impact, this is what I see: more children reading, those out of work finding jobs, students on a different path because of Homework Hub, elderly patrons still connecting to their community thanks to At Home services, and that’s just the start. It’s clear that libraries make our community a better place to learn, engage, work, read, and graduate.

As we look ahead to 2013 and the years to come, I’m excited to continue to partner with the Library to ensure Friends of HCL is providing the resources needed to maintain our Library as an industry leader and one of the most used, most innovative and best systems in the country. I look forward to your thoughts and contributions on this journey as we envision the Library’s future and vital role in our community.

It’s incredible what we’re doing together. Lives touched. Minds nourished. A community strengthened. Libraries are amazing places – ones that are that way because of the continued support of great Friends like you.

“A library is more than a brick and mortar building filled with delicious books. It is also a community of people who live to invest in our youth, who read for knowledge and fun, and who are ready to include anyone who walks through the door.”
