ASS ISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

YOU CAN DO IT! SCHOOL AWARDS Congratulations to the following students who received awards over the last week.

PREP TRANSITION 2011 This week we had the pleasure of meeting our 2011 Prep students when they visited the school for the first of their transition sessions. The children took part in a tour of the school with their parents and prep staff. It was great to see so many happy students proudly wearing their ‘I’m enrolled at Berwick Lodge’ t-shirts. Our specialist teams are looking forward to meeting our 2011 Preps over the next two weeks.

CITY OF CASEY CHILDREN’S SERVICES Last week we indicated that we were including in the newsletter a flyer from the City of Casey outlining programs currently being offered to families. Unfortunately this flyer was omitted so we will include this information in today’s newsletter.

END OF YEAR REPORTS Our teachers are currently working busily on the students’ Semester Two reports. These reports will provide a comprehensive overview of the students’ progress. These reports will be sent home with your children on Friday 10th December. If parents have any queries relating to their child’s report they are welcome to contact the class teacher to further discuss the report.

STUDENTS IN THE GROUNDS OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS We have noticed that several students are arriving at school very early each morning and playing in the playground without adult or guardian supervision. We remind parents that our staff are on duty from 8:45AM to 9:00AM in the morning and 3:30PM to 3:45PM in the afternoon. Dom Marie, our OHSC Coordinator can be contacted directly on 9769 825I if parents would like further information about the excellent before and after school care programs.

We have also observed a number of students who appear to return to school after hours, some as late as 6:00 to 7:00PM in the evening. We are concerned that these students are placing themselves at risk as there is no supervision at this time and there are many areas of the school yard that are isolated. On occasions children have been seen trespassing on the roof of the school and the potential dangers of this practice should be evident. Students have been reminded of the risks involved with being in the grounds outside of the supervision times and we appreciate parent support in this matter.

LIBRARY BOOKS All library books are now due back at the school library. Notices are being sent home for outstanding books and we request that you have a hunt around the house for any Berwick Lodge library or home reading books that you may still have. Invoices will be issued for books that have not been returned. Thank you to all families for your cooperation.

Other suggestions for eliminating a young person’s tendency to down him/herself when something bad happens Try to see the young person in a positive way. Show interest and excitement about

non-curricular areas of his/her skills, interests and personal strengths.

Expose the young person to a variety of extra curricular activities where he/she is likely to be successful.

Keep a record with the young person of all of his/her positive characteristics.

Acknowledge the young person when he/she does not appear to be getting overly down when something adverse happens.

Model for the young person by thinking out loud how you do not put yourself down and are self-accepting when something bad happens (eg: “I wasn’t elected to be on the committee. While this is disappointing, I will not put myself down by thinking ‘I’m hopeless.’ After all, I’m still me—a capable and likable person.”)
