Berry Full of DNA:Exploring Properties of Strawberry DNA
Honors Coordinated Science IIWheatley-Heckman
Background
• Every living thing contains cells, and these cells contain DNA.
• Using the right procedures, we can extract DNA from the cells of almost any living thing.
• Examples: The Human Genome Project, Genetic Testing, Crime Scene Investigations…
• http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/labs/extraction/
Why Strawberries?
• While human cells contain 2 sets of DNA…strawberry cells contain 8!! That is A LOT of DNA, and it is easy to see when extracted.
• Strawberries are easy to mash, and ripe strawberries produce enzymes that contribute to the breakdown of cell walls.
Procedure Overview
• First, you will break the cells apart by physically crushing the strawberries in a bag.
Procedure Overview• You will use an
extraction buffer (detergent solution) to dissolve the membranes of the cell.
• Then, you will filter the dissolved cells using a funnel and cheesecloth to remove unwanted particles.
• Ethanol is used to observe the DNA.
Important Notes
• Before beginning the lab, answer all the pre-lab questions.
• Read the procedure carefully before starting the lab.
• Wear safety goggles!• Each table should work as 2 groups.• When finished with the lab, answer
all the analysis questions.
What did we see?
