Let Manly Warringah Choir captivate you with a variety of choral works by great 20 th century composers. The universal desires
for love, peace and rhythm are expressed in many cultures through forms ranging from popular to sacred and through
moods from playful to deeply personal.
We celebrate the centenary of the birth of American composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein, by singing a Choral Medley from his most famous composition, West Side Story. A 20 th
century version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, it is a story set against gang conflicts. Love and peace are at odds.
Words from Shakespeare’s plays form the basis for a set of songs by George Shearing. The music features close, dense harmonies and lively rhythms, almost jazz like, reflecting the
ironies in the original works. Love has many faces!
Shearing was one of the inspirations behind Bob Chilcott’s delightful A Little Jazz Mass, a work which is light hearted yet
reverential. At the close, peace is found through the love of God.
An exquisitely tender sense of peace infuses the Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre. There is an ethereal quality to the
music set to words by his then fiancée, now wife. The music embodies sublime intimacy: it is like waves from a pebble
dropped into a perfectly still pool. Love and peace are at one.
After the performance, join the performers for drinks and light refreshments on the terrace. What better way to spend a winter
Sunday afternoon?
