What is communication?

Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place to another.

According to Berlo, the main objective of communication is to make the human an effective agent that allows altering the original relation between the organism and its surrounding environment. Intentionally, the human communicate to influence and affect others.

Since the purpose of all communication is to produce a specific response in the other, it is necessary that the person who communicates using the appropriate message to express that purpose. If you know its purpose well be able to achieve a communication, at the same time efficient and effective. Although this purpose is not always is forgotten, it will be difficult to stop communicating.

C - Channel

Channel - Channel actually refers to the medium how the information flows from the sender to the receiver.

All the five senses are the channels which help human beings to communicate with each other.

Hearing: The use of ears to get the message for e.g. oral messages, interpersonal etc.Seeing: Visual channels for e.g. TV can be seen and the message is delivered.Touching: The sense of touch can be used as a channel to communicate for e.g. we touch and buy food, hugging etc.Smelling: Smell also can be a channel to communicate for e.g. perfumes, food, charred smell communicates something is burning, we can find out about which food is being cooked etc.Tasting : The tongue also can be used to decipher e.g. Food can be tasted and communication can happen.

Decoder : Who receives the message and decodes it is referred to as decoder.

R - Receiver

When the message reaches the receiver, he tries to understand what the listener actually wants to convey and then responds accordingly. This is also called as decoding.

The receiver should be on the same platform as the speaker for smooth flow of information and better understanding of the message. He should possess good communication skills to understand what the speaker is trying to convey. He should have the right attitude to understand the message in a positive way. His knowledge should also be at par with the listener and must know about the subject. He should also be from the same social and cultural background just like the speaker.

There are several gaps in the Berlo’s model of communication. According to the berlo’s model of communication, the speaker and the listener must be on a common ground for smooth conversion which is sometimes not practical in the real scenario.

According to Berlo, the reward is the essential element of effective communication. People do not respond unless they expect that their answers are rewarded.

For communication to occur, it is essential that the receiver is interested in the communication situation. As sources or receivers interest is reduced to meet the needs and accomplish the purposes.

The reward has to be defined in the context of the receptor that is giving an answer. Some rewards are immediate and others not, and what is rewarding for the source may not be for the receiver.

In any situation of communication is selected, and processes the message encoding and channels on the basis of the potential reward for the receptor are selected. Your response will be compensatory if you notice that its consequences are of interest and increase their power to Influence.
