Introduction

The church of St Mary, Berkley

A memorial to the Newborough family in the church states that the tablet was erected when the church was rebuilt in 1751. In 1868 there were various press reports of concerts in aid of the Berkley church organ fund and the Frome Times of Wed 14 Oct 1868 p2 reported on the opening of the new organ. From the Bath Weekly Chronicle and Herald of Sat 15 Apr 1939 p26:

Berkley Church, near Frome There is an interesting 18th century church at Berkley, near

Frome, which is said to have been built in 1751 and to have been a copy of St. Stephen’s, Wallbrook, London. It has every appearance of being the work of John Wood, but I have been unable to find any reference to the name of the architect. I should very much like to know who

designed the building. – Member of Bath Branch, Somerset Archaeological Society.

There was an answer to the enquiry in the Bath Weekly Chronicle and Herald of Sat 12 Aug 1939 p22:

There have been three different churches at Berkley. First a Saxon church, replaced at the Conquest by a Norman edifice. The demolition of the Norman church took place about the middle of the 18th century, and the present building was constructed by Italian masons. The registers of the church are in a fine state of preservation and go back to 1547. Some reference to the architect of this interesting building may be discovered in these records.-S. W. Hayward.

The church has a fine octagonal dome with inside the blue surface with white mouldings similar in style to Wedgwood jasperware, although the latter is usually stated as having been developed in the 1770s. The parish is fortunate that, prior to the introduction in 1813 of pre-printed burial registers, many burial entries in the late 1700s include the age. Against entry 440 in the burial register 1813-1942 for a burial on 28 Nov 1859 is ‘the first corpse in the new burial ground (which was consecrated on the 11th inst.)’ Presumably this is an extension of the churchyard. Against entry 647 in the same burial register for a burial on 12 Jul 1903 is ‘first interment in the New Burial Ground’, a reference to the cemetery on the other side of the road (Berkley Street).

The burial register 1546-1770 contains, after the burials, two pages listing benefactors for the poor and for the church. The lists were initially made in 1631 and then added to. This is followed by two memoranda (in Latin) made in 1562 and 1631. The burial register 1546-1770 has a gap for the period 1670-1725 during which a separate volume was used. The first page of this additional volume has ‘Register of those who were Buried in woollen from 1678 to 1723’. The first pages have the entries (in Latin) for 1680 but then gives the burials (in English) from 1678. The rector at time of the start of the volume was Anthony Prowse who has a memorial in the churchyard. The Burial in Wool Acts of 1666-80 required the dead, except plague victims and the destitute, to be buried in pure English woollen shrouds and not “made of or mingled with Flax Hempe, Silke, Haire, Gold or Silver or other then what shall be made of Wooll onely” and failure to supply an affidavit to that effect could incur a hefty penalty of £5 which would be used for the poor of the relevant parish. The purpose of the act was “for the Encouragement of the Woollen Manufactures of this Kingdome and prevention of the Exportation of the Moneyes thereof for the buying and importing of Linnen”. Usually the rich would pay the penalty. The Act may have been in

force until 1814 but at Berkley that annotation of the burial register entries to confirm the provision of an affidavit ceased in 1723. In the meantime, the

Stamp Act of 1723 imposed a duty of threepence on

every register entry of burial, marriage, birth or christening, the officiating minister, who collected the

duty being allowed a commission of 10 per cent. Paupers were exempt and entries in the burial register indicate this either explicitly or by an annotation of ‘p’ that the entry was exempt. Some burial registers, but not that for Berkley, give the annual calculation of the amount of tax to be paid.

There is a peak in 1741 but the register gives no clues as to why this occurred.

On two ocasions in 1821 he was a witness to a marriage at Rodden. In The Farmer’s Magazine of 1842 (vol 6), in a report on Royal Agricultural Show – Bristol Meeting, on p130 has as exhibit No. 68: Mr. Forehead Singer, of Bekley, From Somerset.― A machine for dusting young turnips, to prevent the fly from destroying them; also, attached, a simple but durable turnip drill.―To compete as a new implement, and for trial. Forehead Singer was executor to wills of: in 1838, James Singer, gentleman of Frome (late of Rodden), and in 1839 Jeremiah Singer, of Rodden. In the 1861 census at Tines House, Chapmanslade (Wilts): Forehead Singer, aged 72, unmarried, retired farmer, born at Wicken (Northants), Mayr Singer, aged 70, unmarried, sister, land proprietress, born at Suffiled (Norfolk), and two servants. The death of Forehead Singer, aged 77, was registered 1866/Q1 Warminster. From the burial register: Forchead Singer, aged 77, of Chapmaslade, was buried on 23 Feb 1866.

Abby of Byndon in 1172. From Him in a line of Descent cam John Newburgh of Lulworth Castle in Dorset, Who married Alice, Daughter of William Carwent of Fayroke and Widow of John Wellburie of Berkley, and was possessed of this Manor in 1459

Several of this Family represented the County of Dorset in Parliament IN the Reign of Henry the 8th Christian, Daughter and Heiress to Sr Roger Newburgh of Lulworth, a lineal

Descendant to the aforesaid John, carried off a great Estate to the Lord Marney Whose Daughter and Coheiress married Thomas Howard second Son to the Duke of Norfolk, Who was created Viscount Byndon

Thomas Newborough, Cousin to Sr Roger, and Heir Male to this Family, was the first who settled at Berkley and was buried in this Church in 1513. From Him in a direct Line, descended Roger Newborough the last of this

Name, Who was buried here in 1680: Whose eldest Daughter and Coheiress Anne, married John Prowse of Compton Bishop Esqr She died in 1710, and is buried in that Church.

In Honour to this Family, now extinct, this Inscription was placed here by Abigail, Widow of John Prowse, Son

and Heir to the above named John Prowse and Anne Newborough, in the Year 1751 when this church was rebuilt.

of Berkley House, and dearly love wife of Major Sheppard, 87th Fusiliers

As daughter, sister, wife & mother, loving & beloved She died at Malta, July 24th 1868.

Baptised on 17 Jun 1808 at St John’s, Frome: George Wood Sheppard, son of son of George & Mary Ann Stuart, born 2 Jul 1907. On 7 Feb 1861 at Frome Selwood parish church: Thomas Winter Sheppard, aged 23, bachelor, Captain in the Army, of Emsworth, Hants, son of Henry Winter Sheppard, clerk in holy orders, married Mary Stuart Sheppard, aged 24, spinster, of Froomefield, daughter of George Wood Sheppard, esquire. From the marriage allegation dated 17 Jan 1861, Thomas Winter Sheppard, of Emsworth (Hants) was a Captain in the 25th Regiment of Foot. From a published family tree: Thomas Winter Sheppard was born in 1837, married in 1872 in Scotland Margaret Agnes Nisbet, and died aged 35 on 4 Dec 1872 at Witley Vicarage, Surrey. A notice in the London Gazette of 1848 (vol 1, p130) announced the dissolution of the partnership of George Sheppard, William Hulbert Sheppard, Thomas Byard Sheppard and George Wood Sheppard Woollen manufacturers of Frome Selwood and King Street, Cheapside, London.
