Purpose: To gather feedback from students, staff, and people within the community concerning the process of the Superintendent search as well as gather information on the preferences specific to the new Superintendents personal characteristics.

Important Notes: • There are five (5) respondents who
identified themselves as “students” who are 19 years or older. This is possible given that some high school seniors could be 19 years of age.
• There is one (1) individual who noted they were a student but they are over 60 years of age. This person could currently be enrolled in an education program and appropriately selected the correct category. We did not note that “student” constituted “within Berkeley County Schools.”

calculating the weighting, all expertise areas given a rank of 1st or most important were given 4 points, 2nd in importance were given 3 points, 3rd in importance 2 points, and 4th in importance 1 point. All responses not selected were given 0 points. Points were then summed and ordered from largest to smallest.
Findings Notes: There were slight differences in the preferences specific to expertise between men and women. The n size of the individuals who did not select “female” or “male” was not large enough (n=4) to report on separately.
It is important to note that there are differences in preferences specific to expertise areas. Prior to the selection process the Board needs to make decisions concerning their preferences when it comes to areas of expertise. Further, the Board should think about the proper evidence that can be supplied by candidates to show proof of expertise (certification/certificates, additional training, degree, projects, evidence/data, etc.) or how interview questions or activities will be structured to ensure candidates have an adequate level of expertise.

It is important to note that there are differences preferences specific to leadership qualities between men and women. These personal preferences could have the ability to bias the selection of a new Superintendent as men may prefer one type of candidate and women another. Interview questions, rubrics, and the selection process should be designed to control for such biases.

I believe you should encourage counseling more, such as having every student take a survey at the beginning of the year, would this happen? Because it didn't this year.
I think the superintendent should be able to allow kids their phones in case of family emergency, and not allow kids to get on it unless it is a call. I also would like better school lunches. Because no offense whatsoever, but the pizza they serve us on Fridays looks like dried plastic on a slab of bread.

What would you do to help teachers get the respect back that they seem to have lost in today's society?
I believe that the superintendent needs to be the voice of teachers in a society that does not place much respect on our profession any more. There is always a focus on what the schools and teachers can do to make our students succeed, but no one ever places emphasis on what the parents need to do to help. I would like to see that change. We should not be afraid to defend our school and our teachers. Student discipline needs to be addressed in order for our students to be the best. Behavior issues continue to be the number one concern of most of my colleagues. If student discipline improves, I believe that the students work ethics will improve. There are no alternatives for students that are constantly causing behavior issues. What would our new superintendent do to help us address this issues as teachers, and as parents.

We need to find a better way to motivate students that isn't completly usless like the Math Pledge that was insanly stupid idea "I pledge to be good at math" that doesn't help anyone! Why does saying a sentence help people get better at math. We shouldn't be wasting time with those but we should be using that time in other places. As a student I have never seen the superintendent except for the Multiculturalism and Global Competency Team which also was a total flop the school didn't even drive us there but I'll assume there was a different reason for that. The superintendent needs to be available for students and teachers for many reasons like hands-on experience in the classroom and out. The superintendent must find ways to get rid of the things that are not useful and must take hands-on experience by going to schools and finding out genuine problems and trying to get input from the staff and students there.

BCPS Administrators have a long-standing history of ignoring parental concerns and not holding staff members accountable for their injustices toward parents and students. How do you plan to investigate allegations and ensure justice is served to past and future offenders?
We need a superintendent who will ensure all BCPS teachers, administrators and staff are educated on how to conduct themselves respectably and fairly to eliminate the unacceptable actions and behaviors toward students and parents in the county. They are clearly not in position of power to benefit the students. We need better leadership across the board. Every employee in BCPS should be subject to a performance survey by parents, students and peers. Many who suffered injustices don’t wish to come forward in fear of retaliation toward their students or their employment. Others don’t come forward because they already have and nothing was done. We need leaders focused on growing the availability of opportunities for our students. Administrators are very rude when presented with ideas that do not interest them even when their budgets remain unaffected by potential growth. The past HS ADs in our school are extremely rude and their leadership does nothing to make them accountable when behaving unprofessionally. If you want more details, keep requesting parents and teachers to submit anonymous surveys so they don't have to fear the good ol' boy system that may cause them to lose their jobs or their student to be denied fair treatment if they speak up. It's despicable.

I would like to emphasize the we need a decisive, authorative leader personality as our next Superintendent. We also need someone who is compassionate and caring and that drives their passion to do the"right thing".

I think that our county desperately needs a bridge between the schools and the board office. As a teacher, I feel like there is a growing gap between the two entities. This weakens not only staff morale in our schools creating frustrations and resignations, but it also weakens our ability as a system to collaborate together on what works within the school and classroom from the people who are actually there. I would like to see a superintendent who values this constructive and collaborative relationship to better serve the children of our community.

As a parent of a general ed student, my question is how do you make sure that they are getting the education that they need in the most least restricted environment? My sons come home on a daily basis, talking about how other kids will disrupt the classroom and there is no type of discipline. How can we put discipline back into the schools and classrooms?
I think that schools, especially elementary ages, need to have discipline in them, along with accountability for their actions. So many kids now show no respect to their teachers and their peers and there is no type of discipline taking place to stop all of the disruptions in the classrooms.

What do you intend to do about the fleecing of tax payer monies wasted on overpaid, overstayed, unnecessary board office superintendent, executive, and director positions and invest that money in the field to grow your students, teachers, personnel, and leadership, as well as entice new/veteran teachers to stay in Berkeley County?
In light of recent legal events in BCS, the cutting of critical school staff/personnel to save money is egregious and creating a dangerous situation for ALL. Instead of your school staff numbers driving the services of students, it should be reversed. Penny wise, pound foolish. Stop strapping this issue to the backs of your students and teachers, you are willfully putting them both in harms way. It is morally & ethically WRONG. Trimming of fat needs to happen at the top first, board office employees only impact students indirectly if at all. Consider who works in a substantially closer proximity in shaping and developing our students.

The superintendent should definitely come from outside of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and if possible from another state. The nepotism and "Good Ole Boys" network that currently exists in Berkeley County needs to be dismantled. That is going to require a superintendent who doesn't know anyone here and doesn't owe any favors or consideration to anyone who is currently working for the Board of Education.

1. How will you bring in true leaders, coaches, and visionary to reform education in Berkeley County. We have some fantastic teachers who would be excellent in "fixing" what is broken. Why are the National Board Teachers and other true in the classroom leaders not allow to help make real meaningful change happen.
We need someone who is down to earth. We don't need some PHD in a suit. We need someone who will get in the trenches and not just be seen, but talk to teachers and finds the leaders. We need someone who going to cut the BS, fake smiles, and get the job done. We need a major over hall and to questions the value of the over staffed board office employees. There are WAY TOO MANY people doing the same jobs for crazy amounts of money. A school secretary should not be making $85K when a teacher with 25 years and a masters makes less than $60K.
