part of their educational journey at Berkeley City College,

our graduates now have the skills to build trust, extend a

helping hand and create bridges across cultures. They will

bring significant and positive changes to our society. They

can use what they have learned to build and strengthen com-

munity for others and inspire those who have yet to travel

the path they now leave behind.

Graduates, celebrate your achievements. You have remained on your journey’s

course and have reached your educational goals at Berkeley City College. You recognize that

education provides a way to propel you toward new opportunities. Our faculty, our staff,

and your classmates, have motivated and inspired you. As a result, Berkeley City College has

transformed your lives. As you leave our college community, remember that continuous self-

improvement, risk taking, creativity, and striving for excellence are not skills that you develop

but attitudes that you embrace. Education is an equalizer that will help open many doors.

We are thrilled that more than 360 graduates will be receiving over 620 degrees

and certificates this year. We celebrate our graduates’ life-transforming experiences as new

Introducing Ms. Rue Mapp, Keynote SpeakerMs. Rue Mapp, founder and CEO of Outdoor Afro based in Oakland. Outdoor Afro is a social community that reconnects African-Americans with natural spaces and one another through recreational activities such as camping, hiking, biking, birding, fishing, gardening, skiing — and other outdoor activities. The organization disrupts the false perception that black people do not have a relationship with nature, and works to shift the visual representation of who can connect with the outdoors. It fosters the premise that we remember our history in nature and in doing so leverages social media and supports relevant local leadership to create interest communities,

events and partnerships that support diverse participation in the Great Outdoors. During her childhood, Ms. Mapp divided her time between urban Oakland and her family’s working ranch in the Northern woodlands. There, she cultivated a passion for natural spaces and farming, and learned how to hunt and fish. As a youth, her participation in the Girl Scouts of America and Outward Bound broadened her camping, mountaineering, rock climbing, and road bicycling experience. Even so, Ms. Mapp was troubled by the consistently low numbers of African Americans who participated in these activities. For two decades, she has used digital media as an important and practical tool to connect with people of color who share her outdoor interests. Outdoor Afro emerged from these experiences. Ms. Mapp, a Berkeley City College alumna, earned her bachelor of arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was inspired by her study of the artistic representation of the American forests. She also is a successful entrepreneur whose game and hobby store start-up, Oakland’s It’s Your Move, remains an important part of the community. In 2010, Ms. Mapp was invited to the White House to participate in the America’s Great Outdoors Conference where President Barack Obama signed an historic memorandum to help reconnect all Americans to the Great Outdoors. She was invited back to take part in a think-tank to inform the launch of the First Lady’s Let’s Move initiative. She also was appointed program officer at the Stewardship Council’s Foundation for Youth Investment where she managed its grant making program for two years. Most recently, Ms. Mapp was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to serve on the California State Park and Recreation Commission. Ms. Mapp was named a Hero in Backpacker Magazine, honored as part of the Root 100 of top black achievers and influencers for 2012. She received the Josephine and Frank Dunaneck award for her humanitarian efforts. A proud mother of three active children, Seth, Arwen, and Billy, she enjoys hiking, camping, biking, birding, and kayaking.


Introducing Ms. Wanping Zhao, Salutatorian and President’s Medal WinnerWhen she immigrated to the United States from northeast China in 2011, Wanping Zhao’s life seemed headed away from higher education. Instead of going to college, she found herself working with world famous chefs in highly rated Michelin eateries in Berkeley and Oakland. As time passed, she realized that college was an option that she could not ignore. “I didn’t want to go to college at first, but after a while, I reached my limits as far as opportunities were concerned, so I thought I’d give it a shot and see what I could do,” she recalls. “All my family went to college and I was the only one who didn’t.” Zhao’s grandmother, a refugee from North Korea who at age 15 found a home in China, started her work life as a nanny, graduated from college and became a physician.

This semester, Zhao graduates with a mathematics Associate in Science Degree for Transfer, then moves on to UC Berkeley to major in statistics. During her time at BCC, she enrolled in five to six courses each semester, worked part time and maintained a 4.0 grade point average. She also volunteered weekends at a local home for seniors. After graduating from Cal, she aims to start a sustainable clothing venture “I’m thinking about building a company to make women’s and children’s clothes,” she explained. “I want to use green materials because in China, the pollution is pretty bad and parents want healthy clothes for their children.” As an immigrant and an Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) student, Zhao well understands the plight of international students and provided assistance wherever it was needed. “You don’t know how much you can learn unless you work hard; everyone should help and support each other.”

Introducing Mr. Lorenzo Ramsey, Valedictorian and Recipient, Peralta Chancellor’s Trophy and Berkeley City College President’s Medallion

Lorenzo Ramsey, Valedictorian for Berkeley City College’s Class of 2015 Peralta Chancellor’s Trophy and President’s Medallion winner, has been a student at all four Peralta Colleges since February 2013 and has maintained an impressive 4.0 Grade Point Average. This semester, he will earn an Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer in Sociology from Berkeley City College. In just over two years’ time, he also earned three other degrees from BCC. They include an Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer in Psychology, an Associate in Arts Degree in Political Science and an Associate in Arts Degree in Liberal Arts. He also received an Associate in Arts Degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Merritt College and an Associate in Arts Degree in Social Science Laney College, all with highest honors.

“My experience as a student at Berkeley City College is that our instructors are absolutely committed to having every student be able to connect the material to their lives and the lives of people around them,” Ramsey said. “You can always tell when someone is living their dream rather than doing a job and it happens every day at BCC.” Ramsey plans to attend the University of California in the fall to study Political Science. After graduating from UC, he will become a law student,. One of his life’s goals is to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court. He is one of 25 recipients of the 2015 California Alumni Association’s Kruttschnitt Aspire Scholarship, which provides $6,000 per year for two years to community college transfer students. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ramsey is a passionate advocate for social justice and is an accomplished, classically trained vocalist and musician. “My grandmother and grandfather grew up picking cotton in Alabama and my mother worked on a Ford Motors assembly line; growing up, it was drilled into me that education is a gift,” Ramsey asserted. “There were many people in my family who wanted to have the opportunity to learn but could not attend college; anyone who has the opportunity to do so not only can change their life but the lives of the people around them.”


Introducing, Mr. Fernando Navarro, RecipientBerkeley City College President’s Medal

Berkeley City College President’s Medal winner and Phi Theta Kappa scholar Fernando Navarro graduates this spring with an Associate in Science for Trans-fer degree in mathematics. Phi Theta Kappa is the national community college honor students society and Navarro graduates from BCC this year with a 4.0 grade point average. He was accepted to UC Berkeley for the fall semester. In April, Navarro was part of an All-California Academic Team Award Program annually sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa. At the Sacramento event organized by the Community College League of California, he received a me-dallion of honor recognizing his academic accomplishments. The Phi Theta Kappa program evaluates grades, leadership and community service to deter-mine selection to the All-California teams. “I love how powerful and elegant the science of mathematics can be to solve problems and make life better,” he observed. “I am interested in financial

engineering which applies math models to financial problems and operations research, where math concepts are used to construct models of real situations then tested to see if a system can be made to work better.” In summer 2013, after several years travel around the world and some deep reflection about his life, Navarro decided to pursue a degree in mathematics, a discipline he loves. He enrolled at Berkeley City College to reach that goal. “After high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I traveled in Spain, Europe and Africa and worked at different jobs,” he recalled. “I had some unforgettable adventures, but was never satisfied with how I earned money. Being at BCC enabled me to shift my perception about myself and that was huge.” Navarro noted that his BCC instructors played a significant role in his success. “I was obligated to do work outside classroom and realized that with commitment and practice, I could excel,” he said. “My teach-ers challenged, enlightened and cared about me.” As a BCC math tutor and Student Ambassador, Navarro learned that he could positively influence the lives of others. “I began to understand that with my assistance, I could help others to succeed and that’s cool!” Navarro also was a volunteer for Oakland’s Big Brother Program. For the future, he has two possible career paths in mind—to earn a master’s degree and teach mathematics or after earning a bachelor’s degree, to find a job in operations research. “Berkeley City College and California community colleges offer people many opportunities,” Na-varro noted. “No matter what prevented you from getting a higher education before, you can do it if you com-mit yourself to your goal. Once you walk through that door, you can transfer to a university and then make it anywhere.”
