BCS Project Management Methodology
BCS has been long known for its project management and integration expertise. This success stems from the project managers’ ability to understand the client’s requirements from which BCS endeavours to exceed the expectations i.e. we “look beyond the obvious”. All projects follow our very simple but effective project management methodology. At the very outset, special care is dedicated to the selection of the best possible project team. The team will typically include a specialist senior engineer from each business division and be led by an experienced project manager.
Software Systems
BCS has developed its own High Level Sort Allocation Software called Airflow/Freightflow. Airflow/Freightflow has proven interfaces to most host systems and we tailor every Airflow/Freightflow installation to the requirements of the project to meet the needs of the client.
BCS has also developed Simulation Software, called Sym3, that allows BCS to virtually test a system design to ensure that it can meet the required system KPI’s. With the entire system design and architecture being developed in house, BCS is able to design and test all of the systems and interfaces before and site works are carried out. BCS recognises that risk management is vital for all projects and using Sym3 enables BCS to have improved control of the commissioning process.
BCS Infrastructure Support
BCS Infrastructure Support (BCS IS) was formed in 2001, re-enforcing BCS’ dedication to providing the best customer support possible. BCS IS provides two essential services that are vital to the operation of a modern conveyor system – Operations Support and Maintenance (O&M).
Operations Support: Our experienced onsite & remote engineers are on call 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, to respond to any problems with numerous critical airport and logistics systems.
Maintenance: We are experts in developing and implementing scheduled maintenance programs to ensure continued optimal performance of the systems under our care.
BCS IS currently employs staff in all regions in Australia and other offshore facilities. BCS IS employees are highly trained and experienced electrical engineers, electrical fitters and mechanics, boiler makers and fitters and turners for all of our customers’ maintenance needs. BCS IS is committed to using our experience to provide clients with the best possible maintenance practices and solutions. From our inception, BCS IS has delivered innovative solutions using best practice and current technology, whilst focusing on value adding to our customer relationship, achieving optimum customer satisfaction with our service and the performance of our systems. Our mission statement “To look beyond the obvious” reflects our objective to investigate all possible solutions for our customers, which in some cases can be as straightforward as using a more simplified approach. The fact that we have never lost sight of these philosophies as our company has grown, we believe, is the key to our overall and continued success.
Page 7
Our uncompromising customer service ethic has resulted in BCS securing much repeat and referral business as well as operations and maintenance contracts in all major cities across Australia.
Flexibility
Service arrangements and customers’ needs are defining points to the foundations of the business structure. BCS IS endeavours to review and improve our quality of service programs on a regular and ongoing basis. BCS IS considers that the continuous improvement and flexibility to business is paramount to fulfilling service contracts. Staffing levels and the structure of operations are continually reviewed to meet the changing requirements of industry. As specialists in operations, maintenance and services supplier for baggage, freight and other material handling systems, BCS IS has the template for operations to accommodate the smooth operations required in any baggage or parcel handling conveyor system. However, BCS IS recognises the need to customise operations to the needs of the client as all conveyor systems differ, so the operations and maintenance of each conveyor system is then specifically modified to suit the exact requirements of the system.

Operations
BCS IS provides operational solutions, 365 days per year, 24 hrs a day. BCS IS recognises the need to customise operations to the needs of the client. BCS IS currently employees over 250 fulltime staff (supported by the wider Daifuku group) worldwide with most located in Australia, working rotational shifts 24 hrs a day, 365 days per year. Highly qualified and dedicated employees are available for all customers and can be deployed from other areas within BCS to fulfil a short term requirement to any operations. Measuring progress is not possible without continuous feedback. To be successful as a service provider in the long-term, BCS IS constantly listens to its clients, review its progress internally, changes when needed and continues to expand the skill level of its employees. BCS IS’ singular goal is to be the industry standard for the provision of operations, maintenance and services in the materials handling industry throughout Australia. To achieve this, BCS IS systems must integrate with working environments in a manner that generates compliance, commitment and positive attitudes within its people.
Maintenance Programs
BCS IS can tailor a maintenance program to suit all clients, no matter how large or small. Determining factors such as, Occupational Health and Safety requirements, operational requirements, system access, serviceability of components and restrictions, or the availability of assistance from other personnel are areas that are taken into consideration when compiling maintenance programs. Critical components for the smooth and consistent operations of materials handling systems are identified, this process is undertaken to ensure minimal disruption to a system’s operational status and recommended strategies are offered to minimise risk for all clients. Recommendations to reduce the frequency of failure on items are also part of the ongoing maintenance schedules offered by BCS IS. Maintenance schedules that are easily read and understood are implemented. Maintenance is vital to protect the service life of any piece of equipment. BCS IS creates easily read documentation for all staff and clients, to remove the ambiguity that can be associated with the detail that is required in all comprehensive maintenance schedules. Maintenance services are provided by many different options, some of these are: Onsite personnel:

Other Services
BCS IS supplies audit functions to clients who wish to better understand the condition of various assets such as:
Baggage, freight and other materials handling conveyor systems
Passenger transport aerobridges
Aircraft docking guidance systems
Late baggage hoists Along with the comprehensive audit function the client can look forward to a significantly detailed hard and soft copy report outlining the audit findings and recommendations to remediate the asset.
Quality Assurances
BCS IS utilises an “Industrial Best Practice” policy. Suitably qualified staff and competent managers are the determining issue of all quality related activities undertaken. At a number of facilities, BCS IS is currently involved in ongoing work with similar expectations. The often unique nature of the task requires the development of internal procedures for work method statements and performance testing. In all cases, a goal of the work process is to meet or exceed the requirements and expectations of the contract.
Asset Condition Reporting
BCS IS also provides Asset Condition Reports (ACR) for many clients as part of our service. These reports can be tailored to suit the clients’ need. An ACR provides our clients with a current status of the equipment condition from basic mechanical right through to high level control systems. It focuses on lifecycle expectancies, pricing information for future capex requirements and also a level of comfort that all equipment is being attended to with equal attention.
Hotline Support
As a reflection of our commitment to the industries that BCS has involvement with, we offer a 24/7 hotline support service. This service allows BCS port managers and / or clients to directly contact BCS support expertise outside of normal working hours. The staff that man the line are technical engineers who understand the functionality of the systems, across a range of PLC (programmable logic controller) types and mechanical configurations. The staff understand the impact of down time and the need for continuous operations as well as the client’s dilemmas and angst when issues arise on site. The dedicated staff also understand BCS operations and organisational structure so that access to other key personnel should only ever be a phone call away when using the 24/7 hotline support service. BCS offers a reliable network of VPN (virtual private networks) across Australia which allows remote access to PLC code and system performance, resulting in a much more accurate fault finding process and shorter rectification time frame.
