THE TEARS OF A GIANT TURTLE

Good Morning to the honorable judges, teachers and all my fellow friends. I’m going to

tell you a story about The Tears Of A Giant Turtle.

One dark night, a little monkey went to the beach to find some food as he was very

hungry. He saw a giant turtle laying eggs on the beach.

The little monkey wants to know more about it, so he went closer to have a look. As he

went closer to the turtle, he was shocked to see that her face was covered with tears!

“Madam Turtle, why are you crying?” asked the little monkey. “Is it painful laying eggs?”

“It’s not painful at all,” answered the turtle.

“Do you miss your home?” asked the little monkey.

“No, I don’t.” said the turtle.

“Maybe some sand has got into your eyes.” said the little monkey.

“Not at all,” said the turtle, as she starts to lay some eggs into the sandy soil.

The little monkey wants to find out the reason for her tears. He thought for a while and

asks, “Has something happened to upset you?”

The turtle shakes her head and laughs. Haha…haha….

The little monkey was confused. He still could not understand why the turtle sheds tears.

The turtle smiled at him and says, “No more wild guesses, Little Monkey. I shed tears

because I need to get rid of excess salt in my body.”

“Why is there so much salt in your body? Won’t you get high blood pressure?” asked the

little monkey. “That sounds strange.”

“Actually, it’s not strange at all,” said the turtle. “I live in the ocean where I need to eat

lots of seaweed and drink plenty of sea water. As you know, seaweed and sea water has a lot of

salt.

That’s why I need to get rid of excess salt from my body. And that’s why I can’t stop my

tears from flowing out even while I’m in the water.

I am also sad because I need to leave my eggs in the warm sand to be hatched and to

leave my poor babies to fend for themselves. Luckily, we turtles have hard shells on our bodies

to protect us from our enemies and preys.”

The little monkey began to understand why the turtle seemed to be crying!

The turtle has finished laying her eggs and she smiles sweetly at the little monkey. “I like

your inquisitive mind. It’s good to ask questions and to gather knowledge.” said the turtle. The

little monkey says goodbye to her and goes off to find his food.
