Whether due to a radical change in dietary habits or environmentally induced diseases, it is undisputed that too many of Bequia’s residents are today falling victim to illnesses that once were only seen in the developed nations. The sharp increase in requests for assistance with medical
bills, from an island which previously was known for its healthy population, has made it necessary for the establish-ment of a Medical Emergency Fund on Bequia.The Rotary Club of Bequia and the Northern Grenadines
Community Development Inc. have teamed up to establish the Bequia Rotary/NGCDI Medical Emergency Fund, which will be officially launched on Friday 2nd March, 2012. This medical fund is open to all residents of Bequia. Its
Management Committee comprises eight persons drawn from
the two organizations. The resident doctor on Bequia is the Medical Advisor. The launch begins at 9:00 a.m. under the Almond Tree in
Port Elizabeth with presentations from health professionals. In addition, healthy foods and natural health products will be on sale. Donations will be accepted on the spot, and a special bank account has also been opened where deposits can be made. The public is urged to attend the launch and come on board to help a cause that is solely for the benefit of them-selves and the community as a whole.
