Regatta 2012 is finally heRe! The competing boats have arrived, the practices and warm-ups
are over, and Friday is when the action on the water starts, with the first of the weekend’s series of Yacht Races.
Welcome, everyone, to Bequia – we wish you all a happy, enjoy-able, fun-filled Regatta, and if you are taking part in any of the races or competitions - fair winds, and good luck! The Schedule of Events in this edition of Bequia This Week will help you get the most out of your Regatta weekend. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, location and timing of Easter on-shore activities may be subject to change.
Local Double Ender Races Don’t miss the first ever first Citizens Big Boat Challenge on
Easter Friday, starting from the beach in Lower Bay around 2pm - a unique event for the largest boats only.
To see the whole fleet including the smallest boats, watch out for the start of the first “fishingboat” race of the Easter Regatta series - the 1st heineken Challenge - which takes place from Lower Bay on Saturday morning 7th April. It’s colourful, captivating and the traditional heartbeat of Bequia’s Regatta. Be there from around 10am to see the boats and their crew getting ready for the starts - normally from about 10.30am. The boats are in six classes depend-ing on size (the largest are 28ft and the smallest just 12ft) and the Bequia fleet will be joined by boats from Canouan, Mayreau and Carriacou. The Race finishes at Paget Farm.
The Sunday race - The 2nd heineken Challenge - will start from Friendship Beach around 10.00am (equally photogenic and un-missable!) and finish off Hamilton Point. Boats will then sail down to Lower Bay and pull up on the beach. The final race on Monday - the Mount gay Challenge - will start from the beach in Lower Bay around 9.30am. Make sure you catch at least one start and finish of these thrilling boat races.
The J24s... and the Surprises!Bequia is now famous for its J24 One-Design Class - identical
boats racing head to head - first over the finish line is the winner! The Overall Winner of Bequia's specially designed J24 six-race series will also be crowned "J24 Southern Caribbean Champion 2012"!
A second and equally exciting One-Design Class will be show-ing off their skills, this time for the Martinique-based 25-foot “Surprise” yachts. Crewed mainly by fearless and fiercely competi-tive young French sailors, you will also see many of them taking part in the Heineken Single-Handed Round the Island Race on Lay Day Sunday, with spinnakers flying!
FAMILY FUN ON LAY DAY SUNDAYMajor Regatta sponsors Bequia Beach Hotel are organising a fun-
filled Sunday by the beach in Friendship Bay. As well as hosting the Regatta's popular Sandcastle Competition for children of all ages, and being close to the finish of the not-to-be-missed Crazy Craft race, the Bequia Beach Hotel is also providing musical entertainment from around 12.30pm, an Easter Egg Hunt and a kid's Bouncy Castle! Food and drink specials all day, live music and a beautiful shady beachside location provide the perfect formula for a delightful Lay Day Sunday.
Crazy Craft RaceA Bequia Regatta tradition, this popular spectator event will be
held at Friendship Beach on Lay Day Sunday. (Access the start and registration location from the public parking area a the bottom of the Friendship road). This year’s theme is “Carnival Water March” and a special prize will go to the boat and crew with the best theme interpretation. The Old Fort is also donating a prize for the "Most
Environmentally Friendly Craft". Registration will be from 10.00am but there will be plenty of
time for kids - or adults! - to enter both this and the Sandcastle Competition. The Start is at 12.02pm precisely.
The finished craft should be able to travel from the start to finish under wind power or current only - no fins, paddles, swim or foot power allowed! Pre-formed hulls are permitted, but will score low for creativity. Full rules are available on application -for more info contact Monica 526 3932.
Karib Cable are kindly donating some of the prizes, which will be awarded shortly after the event, at the Bequia Beach Hotel.
Sandcastle / Sand Sculpture Competition – Lay Day Sunday 8th April - Friendship Beach by Bequia Beach
hotel is the place to be if you are young or just young at heart. Kids and adults, teams or individuals – all are welcome. The judges will be looking for imagination, creativity, construction skills and teamwork.
Registration will take place from 8.30am in the Bequia Beach hotel gardens by the beach bar, followed by Start at 9.00am. Teams will be divided into two categories (up to 14 or Kids & Adults). No one may start building or gathering decorations until the “Start” whistle is blown! The competition will end at 10.15am and state of completion will be one of the judges’ criteria. Prize-giving will be at approx 11am. Here are a few rules and guidelines:
- Human bodies may NOT be used as “moulds” (!). You may use buckets, cups etc for modelling but this may score lower for construction skills when compared to modelling by hand.
- Use of natural or man-made objects such as leaves, flowers, pieces of glass, bottle tops and rope is permitted, but only if these are found on the beach during the competition!
(Organisers’ Tip: Check out the location, tides and state of the beach in advance!)
Please note: if beach conditions are unfavourable, the sandcastle and Crazy Craft competitions may be curtailed.
Regatta T-Shirts and more...Souvenir Bequia Easter Regatta 2012 T-Shirts, for kids and
adults, ladies Tanks and Strap tops plus Regatta canvas bags will be on sale throughout the weekend at the Bequia Tourism Office. Merchandise will also be on sale at he Frangipani on Easter Friday (9.00am - 4.30pm), De Reef on Easter Saturday, Bequia Beach Hotel on Easter Sunday and at Gingerbread Gardens Monday (10am - 4.00pm), prior to the Grand Prizegiving.
Easter Ferry TimesBoth ferry companies will run their regular Sunday schedules on
Good Friday and Easter Monday. The last ferries to St. Vincent on Easter Monday afternoon get very crowded, so get there in good time!
Bank OPening tiMesBoth banks in Bequia will be open till 5pm on Thursday 5th April.
They will then remain closed until Tuesday 10th April. ATM machines are available at both banks, but supply cannot be guaranteed throughout the holiday weekend - you have been warned!
