BLO – Bentwater Ladies Organization

The Bentwater Ladies Organization activities continue to keep everyone busy. The luncheons have been a great success again this year.

In March the attendees all became Irish for the day as we enjoyed the music and dancing of the McTeggart School of Irish Dance in The Woodlands. The danc-ers had everyone tapping

their feet with their high-energy routines, accompanied by rous-ing traditional Irish music.

In April Kim Stewart from Stewarts Garden Center was the guest speaker. She gave us ideas about protecting our plants and gardens from droughts as well as decorating ideas for lawns, from fountains to outdoor kitchens.

The Bentwater Ladies will celebrate the Businesswomen of Bentwater at the May 14 meeting. An array of ladies in Bent-water that have small businesses will decorate and host tables at the luncheon. It is a way for BLO to highlight members of our

community and support their businesses. This is always a favor-ite luncheon, so don’t wait too long to sign up.

Also at the May meeting and luncheon, Debby Capps and Lin-da Gent will be taking reservations for the annual BLO Gam-bling and Golf trip to Coushatta. The two-bus trip to Kinder, LA is scheduled for October 24-25 for a fun day and evening at the casino and golf course. Not everyone golfs, so if you are not a golfer, don’t worry. There is plenty to do on the bus, from bingo, laughing and meeting new friends. The rows and rows of slot machines at the casino could be calling your name. Who knows…there is at least one big winner each year and this year, it could be you!

The May luncheon marks the end of the Monday luncheons. When luncheons start back up beginning in SEPTEMBER, they will be held on the 2nd THURSDAY in EACH MONTH.

The September luncheon, scheduled on THURSDAY, SEP-TEMBER 13th, with a blockbuster luncheon event, a style show from White House/ Black Market in The Woodlands. They will present the newest fall and holiday wardrobe items and share tips on how to accessorize and individualize outfits to show your own personality.

Luncheons continue to gain in popularity!

If you have not been a part of the Bentwater Ladies Organiza-tion, you are invited to join at one of the luncheon meetings. There are many different groups of BLO of which to become a part. You can also become a member of a committee. The Holi-day Home Tour and Bric-A-Brac committees will be looking for

volunteers soon. Joining BLO is a great way to meet new friends. If you would like to attend the May luncheon, please sign up on the Bentwater Club website or call the club and make a reserva-tion. Everyone is looking forward to meeting you.

Grammy'sCOOKIES FOR HEROES

Annual packing and shipping event

Marlene Summers, founder, leads the work day for packing and shipping tens of thousands of cookies to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bentwater resident Marlene Summers, founder of Grammy’s Cookies for Heroes and winner of the prestigious humanitar-ian Jefferson Award, led the annual work day for packing and shipping tens of thousand of cookies for our troops overseas. This project began in 2005 when Marlene Summers spoke to a young man just before he was about to be deployed to Iraq. He reminded her of her own son. She met his family and started sending him notes and cookies. She received an email from this soldier saying that morale was getting low and troops were feeling forgotten. He also let Marlene know that the cookies she sent really helped to boost morale amongst the troops. She thought about what she could do to support them while they were so far away from home.

Marlene owned a chocolate chip cookie company – so why not send chocolate chip cookies to the troops as a way to boost morale and thank the brave heroes who serve and protect a grateful nation. She wanted to send a million hugs to the troops! That is how this project started. She started baking cookies, not just any cookies, but HUGE cookies!

They have shipped well over 100,000 cookies to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a non-profit organization, Grammy’s Cook-ie Convoy, Inc. focuses on making our troops feel right at home.

The efforts of the many Bentwater residents who joined Mar-lene in packing cookies and writing notes will be most appreci-ated, especially by those who serve this nation on a daily basis with an unselfish heart.

SCOLIOSISDefinitionA lateral curvature of the spine. Scoliosis affects boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18. It is more common with girls. There are several causes of scoliosis, the two most common are congenital and habitual. Congenital scoliosis occurs when someone is born with a lateral curvature of the spine. Habitual causes are environmental or situational depending on the habits of the individual. Carrying backpacks improperly can contribute to a spinal distortion. Poor sit-ting habits and practicing poor posture can also affect spinal develop-ment in children. Signs of scoliosis are a high hip (uneven hips), a high shoulder, the head being off center, head tilt, back and leg pain.

Chiropractic care works on correcting scoliosis and relieving symptoms and complications associated with scoliosis. To see if chiropractic care can help, please contact:

December 25, 1943 - March 24, 2012

Bonnie Bailey Shelley McCracken, age 68, surrounded by family, peacefully passed into the arms of our Lord on March 24, 2012. She was born to Bonnie Bailey and Charles “Waco” Shelley on Christmas Day, 1943, in Beaumont, Texas and graduated from Beau-

mont High School, where she was a proud Purple Queen. Bon-nie had been associated with the American Real Estate group as a professional realtor for twenty successful years until her retire-ment in 1998. She loved real estate and decorating and could often be found on her computer assisting family and friends or just having fun staying in touch with the marketplace. Bonnie also loved gardening and relaxing outdoors, especially at her beautiful home in Crystal Beach and later at her new residence on the golf course at Bentwater Yacht and Country Club on Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Texas.

Bonnie was always a very active member of the community and until recently was deeply involved with the Bentwater Ladies Organization, the Bentwater Garden Club, and numerous other local activities. She was a collector of friends, a student of people and a consummate listener. She relished meeting new friends, learning their life story and discovering just how much she had in common with them.

She was justifiably proud of her girls and their personal and professional successes and in their truly amazing work ethic, and

of her husband Don’s many life accomplishments. Bonnie was never one to tout her own numerous honors and successes, but rather preferred to let those around her shine.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Bonnie Bailey and Charles “Waco” Shelley; her much beloved sister, Luellen “Sissy” Newton; and her sister-in-law, Robbie Jo Catalano Stephens.

Survivors include her loving husband, Donald H. “Don” McCracken of Montgomery; devoted daughters, Cheryl McK-inzie and partner, Kim Cornealius of Tyler, and Charlotte Sin-gleton and her husband, Mike Calcote of Frisco; son, Donald H. “D.J.” McCracken III of Destin, Florida; grandson, Garrett Singleton of Frisco; mother-in-law, Ruth J. Catalano; brothers-in-law, R. J. “Joey” Catalano and his wife, Kathy, and Bob New-ton all of Beaumont; niece, Bonnie Neale Self and her husband, Joe of Albuquerque, New Mexico; nephews, Robbie Newton and his wife, Fara, and Wyatt Newton and his wife, Brenda; and a host of neighborhood friends she counted as family.

Her funeral service was held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, both in Beaumont, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to M.D. Anderson Can-cer Center, Brain Tumor Trials, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486 or visit www.mdanderson.org/gifts.

Bentwater Property Owners Association (POA) is delighted to announce the establishment of the Bentwater Scholarship Fund on behalf of all Bentwater property owners. An anonymous donor designated Bentwater Resident and POA Trustee Terry Bowie as his/her representative for the express purpose of estab-lishing a scholarship fund for Bentwater employees and their families with a generous contribution of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00). Whoever you are, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

A large number of Bentwater employees, single and married, attend local higher learning institutions and struggle to afford tuition, books and other required materials. There are many Bentwater property owners who will want to assist them by contributing to this extremely worthwhile scholarship program.

Bentwater Property Owners Association elected Trustee and Advisory Board Members will act as the Criteria Committee of this scholarship fund. Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in partnership with Lone Star Community College has been selected to manage the fund.

This permanent endowment will be used to benefit the current employees of Bentwater Yacht & Country Club, Bentwater Property Owners’ Association and Bentwater Sales Corporation and their spouses, legal dependents, children and grandchildren,

Plants for All Seasons is featured at recent meetinggarden club

Sara (left) and Cookie (right) are the Teacup Poodles who run Marsha and Alex Krezel's household. Sara is twelve years old, and Cookie is two years old. Sara thought she would spend her retirement at Bentwater sleeping and otherwise relaxing - but Cookie has definitely upended those plans!

Meet the new residents of Benthaven Island, Lexi and Gunnar LaRose, two of Bentwater’s finest. These dogs live quite the life even though they have a full time job keeping their parents, Al and Carole, in line. They are both giant schnauzers with giant personalities.

Gunnar is two and is a daddy’s dog. In fact he’s probably dad’s favorite son, seeing as how he drove over 11,000 miles to get him.

Lexi is four and is from The Giant Schnauzer Rescue. Their day consists of waking up bright and early in the morning and checking the perimeter for any “intruders” or as many would call them, squirrels. After being fed, which is perhaps the most important part of the day, they engage in an activity which most refer to as taking a nap, but they like to think of it as setting a trap for the aforemen-tioned “intruders.” After this strenuous activity, Gunnar and Lexi usually hone their skills by wrestling, taking out anyone or anything in their way. This is their way of making sure they are as sharp as they can possibly be to defend from the imminent danger of squir-rels... I mean “intruders.”

While these dogs put on the facade of being rough and tough all they really want is to be loved and will gladly make time in their busy schedule for anyone who would like to show them some attention. Back scratches and belly rubs hold a special place in their hearts, but just be warned, if you start, they will let you know when you are done. While each dog has their own specialty, Gunnar is perhaps the most caring. This part of his personality comes out every mealtime. Enjoy your meal but just know that Gunnar will be there after to make sure of two things: (1) that your plate is clean and (2) you don’t have anything on your face. He does this because he cares. Although Gunnar is usually there to help you clean up, Lexi is usually busy taking care of something much more important. While her job is perhaps the hardest she steps up to the plate again and again, never complaining, knowing that someone has to do it. With the recent epidemic of carpets and floors floating away, Lexi is there to LAY down the law, so to speak, and make sure the floors go no where. While Gunnar is busy hunting imaginary bad guys, Lexi lays there, knowing just how important her job is.

Now that you know a little about them feel free to say hello if you see them out but just remember they must be ever vigilant and have busy schedules, although there’s always time for a back scratch.

A large group of Bentwater Garden Club members gathered to hear a presentation by Sherri Harrah, buyer for the nursery, Plants for All Seasons. Sherri’s family has been in the nursery business about forty years. Plants for All Seasons is located on FM 249 near Louetta Road. Sherri presented informative photographs and displayed beautiful live plants for members to admire. Newly developed plants, including the Haute Couture line, were introduced to the interested group.

Ten fortunate members received generous gift certificates from Plants for All Seasons. Three other lucky members won live plants to take home and enjoy. Everyone left with renewed interest and helpful information in the area of gardening.

The Ladies of Edgewood annual luncheon was organized this year by Sherron Kornegay. Many women accepted the invitation to enjoy lunch and visit with new neighbors as well as those who have lived in Bentwater for several years. Sections three and four of Bentwater, which include Edgewood Circle, Edgewood Court, Eastwood Drive, and a part of Edgewood Drive, were represented by sixteen residents at Bentwater Country Club. It was a fun luncheon and a wonderful chance to make new acquaintances while catching up on the lives of friends.

HOUSE NUMBERSClear and Visible from the Street, Day and Night

There are many homes in Bentwater where the house numbers have not yet been installed or cannot be seen due to overgrown shrubbery or lack lighting, or perhaps some other reason that they are not CLEAR and VISIBLE FROM THE STREET, DAY and NIGHT, which is a benefit to others as well as you. In case of emergencies, fire trucks and ambulances (and even the pizza delivery person) can easily find you if your numbers can quickly be seen. To assist you, if needed, in this process, there are nine options for lighted house numbers and one solar powered address illuminator crown that have received prior approval from the architectural control committee. Samples are on display and detailed information is available at the POA office in the event you wish to order from the manufacturer one of the pre-approved lighted house number plaques. You may desire to select a different type for application to the ACC for review. Please let us know how we may assist you. The POA…friendly, courteous, helpful.

UNITED WAYBentwater Cares and Keeps on Caring!

Days of Caring is a program that connects volunteers to people in need in Montgomery County. Bentwater United Way, in cooperation with Montgomery County United Way, has partici-pated in Days of Caring for many years.

Last fall, Bentwater volunteers spent a day at Bridgewood Farms, a facility located just east of Willis that serves the needs of mentally challenged individuals. Volunteers helped prepare ceramics and poinsettias for public sale and made general improvements to the gardens at the farm.

In 2009 and 2010, volunteers worked with the New Danville Community. This community supports mentally challenged adults through job training, education, housing, recreation and transportation. Volunteers made improvements to Dan-ville facilities, stained buildings and fences, packaged and gift wrapped New Danville honey, and built raised garden beds.

In 2008, volunteers worked at Willis Head Start, a Federal school program that serves disadvantaged children. Volunteers built picnic tables and playground equipment for the students.

This relationship grew into a multi-year commitment to provide volunteer readers for the students.

Joe Constantino, a very active volunteer, says “Days of Caring provides an opportunity to look beyond our personal needs and reach out to others that may be less fortunate. It provides a sense of community. Days of Caring helps demonstrate that we care about others and we are willing to support and contribute our time, energies and resources.”

There will soon be an announcement about a new project. When you see the announcement, please join your friends and neigh-bors and partici-pate in the project. All participants are welcome, no special skills are required.

Recently the MUD 18 Board visited the Waste Management Recycling Plant in south Houston and were impressed by the plant operation and the care with which they recycle materi-als to the specifications of the commodity markets that buy the recycled materials.

In 2011, 32% of TOTAL HOUSEHOLD REFUSE in BENTWATER was RECYCLED!

The Board is proud of Bentwater residents' participation and know that all can continue to increase the ratio of recycled material in 2012.

Some recycling reminders: Acceptable Items: juice boxes, glass bottles and jars, tin/steel cans (including large coffee cans), metal 2 ft or less in length, paper board, magazines, aluminum cans, 12" x 12" card board, newspaper, junk mail and plastic with codes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7). The top of the yellow lid has a table of acceptable items to serve as a handy quick reference guide.

Unacceptable Items: No wire. No wood. No foil. No plastic wrap. No plastic bags (even if marked with codes 2, 4 etc). Other unac-ceptable items: Styrofoam (plastic code 6, any type of flexible packaging such as film or shrink wrap. Note: flexible bags can be recycled at most grocery stores, including Kroger and HEB.

Please DO NOT bag recycled mate-rial - it interferes with the recycling process. Many residents have found that they save money by purchasing far fewer garbage bags than they bought prior to recycling.

If you have a questions about your trash ser-vice, you can call Waste Management Customer Service Center @ 713-686-6666 or 800-800-5804. Or you can send an email with your question or complaint to [email protected] to receive a response within the same business day. If you have questions about curbside service or recycling, call the customer service center at 713-686-6666.

Recycling is good for the environment and good for our pocketbooks.

Since 1972, the USAonWatch-Neighborhood Watch Program (housed within the National Sheriffs’ Association) has worked to unite law enforcement agencies, private organizations, and individual citizens in a nation-wide effort to reduce crime and improve local communities. The success of the program has established Neighborhood Watch as the nation’s premier crime prevention and community mobilization program.

Sponsored by Bentwater POA, Alexandra Hicks and Bob Hook have been named co-chairs of our Neighborhood Watch Com-mittee. Simply put, they are asking you to keep your eyes and ears open, not because we have a high crime rate, but because we don’t want any crime.

- An alert neighbor knows who lives on their street and can recognize strangers.

- Observes any unusual activity in their neighborhood

- Knows which houses are unoccupied during the day and who is on vacation.

- Immediately reports suspicious activities and crimes to local law enforcement. Watch for upcoming interesting and infor-mative articles from them.

EMERGENCIES- Call 911

Or, call Montgomery County Sheriff ’s non-emergency line -936-760-5800

Although some suspicious activity in your neighborhood could have an innocent explanation, law enforcement would rather investigate the situation than be called when it is too late to prevent a crime. Your call may save a life, prevent an injury or stop a criminal act.

PARKING IN THE STREETWhat are the rules?

Bentwater® Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restric-tions, reads in part:

(a) “No motor vehicle or non-motorized vehicle (including without limitation, trucks and recreation vehicles), trailers, campers, motor-cycles, off-road motor bikes, bicycles, golf carts, go-carts, machinery or equipment of any kind may be parked or stored for longer than ten (10) hours or on a semi-permanent or daily basis on any part of a lot, driveway, private road or street, easement, right–of-way, or Com-mon Area unless such vehicle or object is completely concealed from public view inside a garage or approved enclosure. Notwithstanding the ten (10) hour parking restriction, there shall be no overnight parking on any road or street. Passenger automobiles, passenger vans or pick-up trucks that are in operating condition and not in a state of disrepair, having current license plates and inspection stickers, and that are in daily use as motor vehicles on the streets and highways of the State of Texas are exempt from the ten (10) hour parking restric-tion and the overnight parking on the street in front of the residence only; however, such parking shall not be continuous and shall not exceed forty-eight (48) hours in duration. No vehicle may be repaired on a street or repaired on a lot unless such vehicle is concealed inside a garage or other approved enclosure during the repair thereof.”
