WELCOME BFFs!We are so honored and blessed to be able to launch the Bentonville Film Festival initiative this year in the quintessential American town of Bentonville, Arkansas. Just over a year ago the wildly ambitious idea of launching a film festival championing women and diversity was brought to us by our BFF, Walmart, and, with the support of our other BFF, Coca-Cola, the idea quickly blossomed.

Soon our BFF family began to grow and thanks to all of them we have made that ambition a reality. As we thought through how to make this a powerful, positive and proactive influence in filmmaking we realized it needed to be more than just a one-week event, which lead us to create a national calendar of events to champion women and minority filmmakers, talent and financiers. We have now positioned the platform to provide ongoing turnkey mass distribution opportunities for women and minority owned production companies, independent filmmakers and distributors. We believe our philosophy of inclusion and positive proactivity, coupled with a commercial focus, will enable us to have a significant impact on our mission to amplify the voices of women and diversity, both in front of and behind the camera.

This inaugural event has come together quickly, thanks to the support of an amazing group of sponsors, industry leaders and local volunteers. It truly took a village — actually a great American town — to pull this off and we hope you all enjoy as many of the great events as you can. Go see a film or two, take a walk to the Crystal Bridges Museum, experience the community and hospitality at Sponsor Village, join us for some fun special events and we hope to enlighten and inspire you along the way with impactful panel discussions and dialogue.

Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actor Geena Davis is one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, and is well known for her seminal roles in several feature films that became cultural landmarks. A long-time advocate for women and girls’ empowerment, Davis is now recognized for her pioneering work to change the media landscape nearly as much as for her acting accomplishments. She is the visionary and founder of the non-profit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which uniquely combines groundbreaking research and behind-the-scenes advocacy. The Institute is successfully influencing film and television creators to dramatically increase the percentages of female characters — and reduce gender stereotyping — in entertainment made for children 11 and under.

While watching children’s entertainment with her young daughter, Geena was astounded by the dearth of female characters. She felt that surely — in the 21st century — kids should be seeing boys and girls sharing the sandbox equally. It turned out that virtually no research had been done on gender representations in children’s media. Fueled to take action, her Institute has now commissioned the largest body of research on gender representations in film and television ever undertaken, spanning over 20 years. The results confirmed the disparity she observed: in family films and kids’ TV shows, there is only one female character for every three male characters. In group and crowd scenes, only 17% of the characters are female. The few female characters depicted are often hyper-sexualized, even in G-rated films.

Geena’s thoughtful leadership is recognized globally. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, has quoted Geena for her motto: “If they can see it, they can be it.” She was appointed Special Envoy for Women and Girls in ICT for the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Geena is also an official partner of UN Women, working toward their goal of promoting gender equality and empowering women worldwide.

According to the Geena Davis Institute’s latest global research, there is a direct association with having a female director or a female writer and seeing more girls and women on screen. When you have a female writer attached, the percentage of girls and women on screen jumps 7.5 percent. When you have a female director attached, the number of girls and women on screen jumps 6.8 percent. Although the movie industry has evolved since Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland refused to accept the absolute power of the studios over their destiny, there has never been another time when women have been as underrepresented on screen as they are now. For an industry that offers so few opportunities for women and minorities, increasing numbers of talented women are pushing back by taking control of their own interests rather than depending on the powerful commercial studios. This panel will feature celebrities who have taken control of their destiny by starting their own production companies.

TICKET POLICIESRush Tickets: For sold-out screenings, a Rush Sales line forms at the event venue approximately 45 minutes prior to the event’s start time. Admission begins approximately five minutes before the start time and is based on availability. Admission is not guaranteed. Note: Rush Sales are limited to one (1) ticket per person.

Free Special Events: Free screenings and events require a ticket or proper accreditation for admission. Tickets may be reserved online or requested at any ticket outlet location.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be no advance tickets avail-able for the free panel events at the Crystal Bridges Museum. Admittance will be on a first come, first served basis. Admission is not guaranteed.

SHUTTLE SERVICE Free Festival shuttle buses will begin at 8:30 AM and will end at 12:00 midnight, Tuesday through Friday. No shuttles will be running on Saturday. There will be two routes, each running in the opposite direction.

The shuttle frequency for each of these routes is approximately every 30 minutes. Depending on your next Festival venue, you can choose the route that gets you there the quickest. Shuttle routes will vary depending on venue schedules.

PARK AND RIDE SHUTTLESThere are 3 designated park and ride locations: Old Nunnally, Sheraton Four Points and Grace Point Church.

Festival shuttles will service these locations from 8:30 AM to 12:00 midnight. Please see venue map.
