Description and Objectives

Course Description

This workbook contains exercises to create a set of roadway plans in accordance with standards using MicroStation.

They are meant to be worked either in order of the exercises in each course or as individual standalone courses. You can start at any course. Within a subdirectory of the dataset called Milestones there are files named for each individual course, begin by using that particular file.

Metric or Imperial: Where there is a difference required for the Imperial and Metric datasets, the Metric instructions are shown in square brackets[]. For example, enter the pavement width of 12 feet [3.6 Meters].

Leveraging Existing Design Data

In this exercise we will use other existing data, in this case Survey data, that will need to be incorporated into our project. We will use the referencing tools, set reference orientation and understand Nested Attachments.

Producing Project Deliverables-Creating “Cut” Sheets from Project Data

During this exercise we will begin creating our project deliverables by creating sheets from our project data. We will begin by creating a place for those sheets to reside, within a sheet model. Then we reference, or overlay, our Survey and Proposed Roadway at a 1:1 scale.

1. Continuing in RDWY_Proposed.dgn, select the Models icon from Primary group of the Home tab.

2. Then from the Models dialog, pick the icon for Create a New Model.

3. Set the Type of Model to be created by selecting Sheet from Seed. Define the Sheet Model from the project directory, ...\Seed\Civil RDWY QuickStart Sheetseed.dgn [Civil RDWY QuickStart A1-SHEETSEED].

4. After selecting the respective Sheet seed, you are then prompted to select the corresponding model from that seed. Choose Plan Sheet 50 Scale [1;1Full Scale].

5. Define the Name to be Plan Sheet, provide a Description as shown. Also set the Annotation Scale to 1”=50’ [1:750], and define the Sheet Name to be PLANRD, and Sheet Number it RD101, and turn on the Show Sheet Boundary.

6. Next, double-click on each model name in the Models dialog. Notice how the active model changes. Go back to the Plan Sheet model.

7. Next Reference the proposed design by dragging-and-dropping the Master Model, Roadway, into the view.

8. Set the Attachment Method to Interactive on the Attach Source Files dialog, which will appear after dragging and dropping the Roadway model onto the view. When finished, click OK.

9. On the Reference Attachment Settings dialog, set the Model to Roadway, and the Logical Name and Description as shown. Make sure that you select the Orientation Coincident-World, the Detail Scale should be set to 1”=50’ [1:750] and Nested Attachments should be Live Nesting as shown. Pick OK when finished.

10. Fit View to view the Sheet Border referenced to our Sheet Model, the Proposed Roadway file, as well as the Survey Topo data referenced to the Proposed Roadway model. They will appear as two small dots on the view. The one in the upper right hand corner is the actual geometry while the dot in the lower left is the sheet border itself. Quite typical of actual projects.

12. Click the Reference icon from the Primary group. Next select the reference file, RDWY_Proposed. Then, pick the Display icon as shown. Note the reference of both the Roadway and the Survey Topo are turned off. Turn the display back on.

13. Next, change the Nested Attachments from Live Nesting to No Nesting. The Survey Topo data turns off. This file is referenced to the Roadway Proposed and is controlled by Live Nesting. Set Nested Attachments back to Live Nesting.

14. Select the Level Display tool from the Primary group.

15. On the Level Display dialog select the file RDWY_Proposed, Plan Sheet model as shown. Note the levels displayed are contained in that model and file.

4. Make the Rotate View tool active. Snap to the intersection of the project Centerline and South Entrance Driveway and issue a data point. Then snap to beginning point along the first tangent section and issue another data point to define the X axis of the view.

5. Select the Define Sheet Boundary tool again, ensuring that the Rotate method is selected from the tool settings window. We are going to rotate the sheet relative to the view. Begin by snapping to the upper-left corner of the sheet boundary and issue a data point there for the pivot point. Next, snap to the upper-right corner of the sheet boundary and issue another data point to define the start angle of rotation.

6. You will note the sheet border rotating on your cursor. With the focus on AccuDraw, press V on the keyboard. This rotates AccuDraw’s compass back to the View’s rotation. Index the to red tick mark of the compass and issue a data point to define the amount of rotation.

1. Continuing in the RDWY_Proposed.dgn, select the Rotate View tool from the Tools group of the View tab. From the tool settings window choose the Unrotated Method and provide a data point into the view. This keeps our Y axis aligned with North.

2. From the Cells group of the Annotation tab, pick Place Cell.

3. Ensure that RDWY_Civil.cel from the cell library is attached, set the active cell to North (Turn off Interactive if needed) and the following settings as shown.

4. Move the cursor to the upper-left hand corner of the sheet and provide a data point or left mouse click to place the North Arrow.

Challenge Exercise(s)

You have now learned the workflows and processes in this workbook. You have began to store them into memory. You are now ready for a Challenge Exercise.

Challenge Exercises are designed to further cement those same workflows and procedures into memory. This is accomplished by hands-on practice. They are not meant to be a step by step, directed, “click here” exercise but rather begin with a small amount of guidance and a general understanding of the outcome.

It allows the learner to take charge of their own learning. We guide less, you explore more, it let’s you guide and deepen your personal learning experience and realize the joy of self discovery.

If questions arise, they too can be answered by a Bentley Instructor, in our regularly scheduled MicroStation Ask the Instructor sessions.

We also encourage you to create your own versions of these exercises, using your own data based on your own unique experience.

Challenge Exercise Sheet Finishing

Using the previous challenge exercise (Phase II) for Extending the Project work the following steps to complete the project.

Create sheets.

Annotate each sheet as in “Phase I” by placing north arrow and bar scale cells.

Label the new roadway “State Route 455”

Remove the existing and place a new End of Contract cell at the West end of “Phase II” of the project.

Create additional sheets to produce the plan set for the project similar to what is shown.

Hint: To help lay out the sheets use the Clip Shape 11x17 cell from the cell library in the dataset.
