The Mulsanne build story concludes with a range of

exhaustive real world tests and checks that underline

Bentley’s total commitment to the quality of its new flagship.

Whilst quality checks are fundamental to every stage of

the Mulsanne’s build, it is at the penultimate sign-off stage

‘Checkpoint 7’ that the complete car is given the most

rigorous examination possible. Every Mulsanne must pass

through 503 individual checks conducted by Donna Morrey

and her inspectors from the Quality team.

The inspection lasts a full two hours and features all of the

functional measures you’d expect of a modern automotive

plant but with key two critical differences; Bentley reviews

every single Mulsanne, without exception, and the inspection

team sets the most exacting standards of quality which are

commensurate with a flagship model at the pinnacle of the

ultra-luxury segment.

“New colleagues are sometimes surprised by the lengths

we go to and have been honest enough to admit that what

we consider an issue would not register at another facility.”

Donna Morrey explains.

Whilst checking that every function works (first time, every time and on every

car) Donna’s team is also tasked with looking beyond the merely operational. In

her own words the team will also act as the ‘hands and eyes of the customer’

and a skilled inspector has a natural empathy for the car and how it should look

and feel. Morrey adds:

After testing on the shake rig and rolling road, every Mulsanne completes a

rigorous on-road evaluation. Jason Davies and his colleagues have an in-depth

knowledge of the roads surrounding Bentley’s headquarters and the 21-mile

route has been chosen to assess the Mulsanne’s engine performance, ride

quality and cabin refinement. Morrey comments:

“Jason and his team have one of the most enviable jobs at the factory but

their work involves something far more important than completing some

basic checks and enjoying a drive. Each Mulsanne is driven on a wide range of

carefully selected roads offering variations in camber and surface quality.

Road types range from narrow English country lanes to fast dual carriageways,

allowing the car to be comprehensively evaluated.”

Once the car returns to the Pyms Lane factory it enters a special test facility

that simulates monsoon-like weather conditions to ensure that it is completely

watertight before heading for the very final sign-off stage – ‘Checkpoint 8’.

Here, the car progresses through a long line of ultra-bright overhead and side

lights (nicknamed the ‘shipping lane’) which enables the Quality team to inspect

every surface in the most minute detail.

During the critical pre-production stage senior Bentley managers from right

across the business join the vehicle review at ‘Checkpoint 8’ to examine the

culmination of their efforts, despite having previously completed hundreds of

their own checks.

The Continental Supersports Convertible further strengthens

Bentley’s supercar range, following the introduction of the Continental

Supersports Coupé in 2009. The new Supersports Convertible, with the

same 630PS (621bhp/463kW) twin-turbocharged W12 engine, is the

fastest, most potent drop-top Bentley has ever built, offering the ultimate

Bentley driving experience in the world’s most dramatic convertible.

■The standardisation of pioneering FlexFuel technology across

the 2011 Continental model range reaffirms Bentley’s on-going

environmental commitment to make all its cars biofuel-compatible

by 2012.

The inspiration for the ‘Supersports’ name is the 1925 Bentley

Supersports, a race-bred version of the iconic Bentley 3-litre, that

delivered 85bhp when more ordinary cars were equipped with a

modest 15bhp. It was also the first production car to reach 100mph

– extreme performance in its day.

The new, muscular four-seat Supersports Convertible is unmistakably

Bentley in its design and craftsmanship but its interior signifies a

dramatic re-interpretation of Bentley luxury. Satin-finished carbon

fibre, Alcantara™ and ‘Soft Grip’ leather create a unique ambience

with a distinctly sporting and contemporary style.

All models in the Continental model range, including the new

Supersports Convertible are now capable of running on both

petrol (gasoline) and E85 bioethanol or any combination of the two,

reaffirming Bentley’s ongoing commitment to make all its cars bio-

fuel compatible by 2012. Pioneered by the Supersports Coupe, this

FlexFuel technology offers a reduction of up to 70 per cent in CO2

emissions on a ‘well-to-wheel’ basis, a measure of a fuel’s net

contribution to the atmosphere, not just tailpipe emissions.

To ensure seamless power delivery, the on-board fuel supply

system detects the blending ratio of the fuel in the tank and

ensures that power and torque remain constant regardless of the

ratio of petrol to biofuel.

the standardisation of the FlexFuel W12 engine on all 2011

Bentley was founded by Walter Owen Bentley, known to all as

‘W.O.’ He was a born engineer, but his first experience was not

with motor cars - it was trains. In 1905, aged 16, he set off on his

bicycle to work at the Great Northern Railway Locomotive Works

in Doncaster, northern England.

Off duty, he soon abandoned the push-bike in favour of motor

cycling and with his brother took to racing. In their first event,

the London to Edinburgh Trial, they won a gold medal. W.O. raced

at the Isle of Man TT event and at Brooklands race track, near

London.

The internal combustion engine made sweeter music to his ears

than steam trains and in 1912 Bentley’s family found funds enough

to buy a small company importing French DFP sports cars.

On a visit to the DFP factory in 1913, W.O. happened to notice

an aluminium paperweight on somebody’s desk. It gave him the

idea of using the lightweight metal in place of cast iron to make

engine pistons.

The first such Bentley pistons went into service in aero engines for

the Sopwith Camel during the Great War but when the fighting was over

W.O. set about development of a racing engine - Experimental Bentley No 1.

“I wanted to make a fast car, a good car - the best in its class”, and he did.

In the 1920s, with the 3 litre, 85bhp engine providing speeds of 80 mph

and more, Bentley Motors set numerous speed and endurance records,

competed successfully at Indianapolis, the Isle of Man TT and Brooklands

- and became inextricably linked with the history of the famous 24-hour

race at Le Mans.

Le Mans - one of the longest established motor races in the world - is a

gruelling test of speed, endurance and teamwork.

Duller - achieved Le Mans victories in

1924, 1927, 1928 1929, and 1930 - taking

the first four places in 1929.

In 1931 Rolls Royce took over Bentley

and W.O. was taken on as a development

engineer by the new owners.

Social trends in the late 1920s and early 1930s were mirrored in a

rise in smaller owner-driver saloon cars with style, performance and

comfort. Bentley Motors (1931) Ltd. successfully met this demand with

the Derby-built 31/2-litre and 41/4-litre Bentleys built between 1933 and

1939, but when W.O. was offered a job at Lagonda in 1935, the year that

a Lagonda won at Le Mans, the allure of working with racing cars again

was irresistible. He went on to design the V12 Lagonda, later working for

Aston Martin and Armstrong-Siddeley before retiring.

Encouraged by Stanley Sedgwick and the Bentley Drivers Club, W.O. was

Patron of the Club until his death in 1971.

When Bentley announced its return to Le Mans in late 2000, it was

clearly stated that it would be a three year programme with victory the

only aim.

In 2001, Team Bentley scored a remarkable third place followed by a

creditable fourth in 2002 with the EXP Speed 8.

Then, with the culmination of the development programme, Bentley

achieved outright victory in June 2003 - bang on schedule.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera is the new top model in

the Gallardo line-up. Its evocative “superlight” badge refers to a driving

machine of true sporting character and describes a high-performance

and lean automotive athlete. The Superleggera makes its entrance to

continue the success of its predecessor, launched in 2007, of which

Lamborghini produced and sold no less than 618 in just one year.

Compared with the already lean Gallardo LP 560-4, the weight of the

Gallardo Superleggera has been trimmed by 70 kilograms (154 lb). The

super sportscar from Sant’Agata Bolognese boasts a dry weight of no

more than 1340 kilograms (2954 lb) – the lightest road-going model

in Lamborghini’s range, and a new arrival in one of the most exclusive

market niche segments.

One key factor is the exterior and interior components made from

carbon-fibre. Carbon-fibre is ideal for the manufacture of sportscars as

its use allows for weight reduction and improved mechanical features.

The car’s performance is thus enhanced thanks to a better weight-

to-power ratio and reduced total mass, which means that CO2

emissions are also lower. Lamborghini has been at the forefront in this

material’s application for many years, and now the brand is extending

its leadership even further.

He has long been revered as one of the many legends surrounding

the world’s most uncompromising sports car brand – Valentino

Balboni, a remarkable test driver with his own personal cult status.

Automobili Lamborghini has dedicated a model in his honour

and bearing his name – the Gallardo LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni.

Balboni was hired in 1967 by company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini

himself. From early on, it was evident that the young Balboni had a

special feel for cars, that most sensitive of all instincts that connects

to the ‘life blood’ of an automobile and defines the soul of a test driver.

“A Lamborghini must always combine the precision of a

race car with the reliability of a good friend,” says Balboni.

Since 1973, he has sat at the wheel of every prototype built

by the brand, and even most production cars have passed

through his hands before being delivered to their customers.

The Gallardo 550-2 Valentino Balboni boasts not only its own

retired. Yet, Valentino Balboni continues to travel to many countries

around the world as an ambassador of the brand. The special

exclusivity of the Gallardo LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni is guaranteed

- it is limited to 250 units. The Balboni model is the first Lamborghini

to deliver its power to the road via its rear wheels alone since 1999.

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 is part of the most successful

Lamborghini range of all time: since 2003, more than 10,000 Gallardo

models have left the Sant’Agata Bolognese production plant.

The redesigned four-wheel drive transmission, improved bodyshell

stiffness and the optimised aerodynamics all contribute to the

overall improvements in the vehicle, as do the reduced weight and

decreased friction throughout the components.

Ferruccio embarked on producing helicopters, one of

his life-long ambitions, but when the Italian government

refused to grant him a license, he made the decision to

turn his attention to cars. The automotive world was

never the same again.

Ferruccio Lamborghini opened a car factory in Sant’Agata

Bolognese in 1963, delivering the first customer car, a 350

GT, in 1964. Lamborghini has, since then, been producing

some of the most extraordinary cars in the world.

The ‘charging bull’ symbol reflects Ferruccio Lamborghini’s birth sign. It is

still famously sported on all Lamborghini cars today.

The theme continued through the naming of cars after legendary fighting

bulls: models such as the Miura, Countach and Diablo, and currently

Murciélago and Gallardo, conjure similar emotions in school boys and
