By now all Bentleigh Campus, Life, Life Subscriber, Service and Affiliate members will have received an election package in the mail, the reason being that the timing of this edition of At Ease may have been too late to disseminate the election material.

As there were only one nomination for the position of President and Treasurer Warrick McDonald and Patricia Cahill are duly elected to the respective positions for a two year term.

Also you will see that there was no election required at the Cheltenham/Moorabbin Campus as there were only the two nominations for the Cheltenham/Moorabbin positions, consequently both Chris Barille (Vice President Cheltenham) and Judy Smith (Committee Cheltenham) are duly elected and will serve on the committee for the next two years.

The AGM will be the last activity of my Presidency at the end of which the 2018/19 committee will be introduced after which I will relinquish the chair in favour of Warrick McDonald. I wish the incoming committee well.

I take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers and committee members past and present from both campuses for their loyal support over the last nine years and a special shout out for the management team and staff ably led by Glenn, Kane, Sharyn and Sylvia, they are a dream team and the envy of most other sub branches. It would also be remiss of me not to mention Felipe Rios and Ian Ephraims our long serving chefs for transitioning our kitchen and bistro back from being outsourced to an in house operation. It was a calculated move by management, implemented by Felipe and Ian and I believe a resounding success all round.

I must say that I have enjoyed the journey as secretary, treasurer and president spanning the last 25 years, the RSL was the perfect organisation for me to become involved in after four decades in the RAAF. I am an Ormond boy born and bred and many of the Bentleigh RSL

members were the parents of kids that I went to school with and some were my teachers. It makes everything a little bit easier when you have the luxury of local knowledge.

I must acknowledge the late Keith Jones who was secretary for 16 years and mentored me, Keith was an administrator extraordinaire a great RSL man and a good friend to me. I must also acknowledge another long time member Ron Smith, who was and still is a Bentleigh RSL Guru and a go to man, who was always there when I needed advice but was never in the way. His council was always appreciated.

Unfortunately when one is around for such a long time you meet and become friends with a lot of wonderful men and women who when I started out had barely retired and now as I finish, they are by and large if not in their twilight years have left us. Rather than being overly sad, it was an absolute pleasure to have known them all and enjoy their company and support along the way.

It only remains for me to bid you the members farewell, I believe that Bentleigh RSL Sub Branch both campuses are in a good place, this can be seen by the amazing growth in membership numbers and with Cheltenham Moorabbin becoming a dining destination of choice, however there is always more that can be done, debt reduction is foremost to mind and preparation for the next round of gaming entitlement procurements commencing this year and culminating in 2022, there are huge dollars involved and the appropriate saving regimes have been put in place.

Bentleigh RSL has been a big part of my life and while I look forward a few years of retirement it and its people shall always be in my thoughts.

Veterans, Members and the Local Community. This submission was lodged a number of months earlier without his knowledge, until early this year when Ian received a call informing him of this award. This notoriety not being in Ian’s nature, he tried to let this acknowledgement go unknown.

Ian, although not leaving altogether is a Life Member of the League, Inductee in the Hall of Fame (RSL Victoria), Citizen of the Year for the City of Glen Eira, a true Gentlemen and a great friend. Ian we thank you for your service and contribution and enjoy your travel.

Lastly to my Management Team and Staff, I thank you for your commitment and dedication. To those who have had, and are having new additions to your families, congratulations. Our staff make both Bentleigh RSL and 50 Acres a great work place to be a part of.

Glenn Sanders ACCMGeneral Manager

MANAGERS REPORT

Being well and truly now into 2018, we left 2017 with considerable momentum and achievements and have not looked back. Your stable board have been extremely supportive of our goals and initiatives that have been implemented over both campuses and we look forward to a prosperous 2018.

Our fantastic loyal band of volunteers were a significant component for your club receiving 2017 Sub Branch of the Year. The contribution that these volunteers make to the wider community often goes unrecognised though the countless hours of support provided reflect the nature in the RSL. We are extremely proud to have received this award

50 Acres successfully completed its first full financial year exceeding our expectations along with, for the first time surpassing 2000 members. The team were exceptional, ensuring our members and guests enjoyed each visit. With this rapid success, inadequacies have arisen and we are in the early stages of conceptual plans to resolve some of these traffic flows and operational concerns within the venue.

Bentleigh successfully completed a redevelopment consolidating two sets of toilet amenities, contemporary style gaming lounge and luxury member’s lounge. The end result is and has been extremely well received in partnership with Rubicon Design and Construct and contractors involved. Both of our Campuses continue to be popular within the local community.

Having now worked alongside our retiring President, Mr Ian Butcher, for 10 years, it would be remiss of me not to mention the support, leadership and dedication he has not only contributed to veterans and the RSL but also to all employees of our organisation. For those who don’t personally know Ian, he is a very humble man, so humble that in early January, Ian received Citizen of the Year for the City of Glen Eira for his contribution to the RSL

Our establishment offers a welcome respite from the busy Centre Rd of Bentleigh. The RSL is part of the sub-division of branches that spread right across Victoria and the nation.

Named as Sub-Branch of the year 2013 and 2017, against many strong contenders, our establishment upholds the values ingrained in the RSL culture as well as those virtues exhibited by many members during service for our country.

The overall experience created by our staff is an exceptional way to spend a special occasion or long afternoon with friends. There are many different areas throughout the venue that can cater to everyone’s needs, from work to leisure, or from a planned function to a small gathering.

There is plenty on offer here at the Bentleigh RSL. Please make sure to let us know if there is anything we can do for you during your time spent with us. It’s imperative that you walk away feeling elated and refreshed and from the moments you shared at our place.

We proudly maintain a standard here at the RSL which is among the best that Victoria has to offer and its all part of our service to you.

Make sure to drop by next time you need a break.

WHY WE ARE THE 2017 SUB-BRANCH OF THE YEAR!

THE JOURNEY In November 2013, the Bentleigh RSL SubBranch Incorporated was nominated for andawarded the “Sub Branch of the Year” whichwas the culmination of a lot of hard work bythe committee of management having takenback the sub branch from an interim committeeof management in 2010. The premises werecompletely refurbished and a business modelput in place, life was good.

As part of a strong business plan themanagement committee and managementteam looked at the Cheltenham Moorabbinsituation and agreed that if favourable financialassistance was made available to enable acomprehensive refurbishment of the premises.

group photo

A favourable funding arrangement wasoffered by RSL Victoria which enabled thecommittee of management to put theamalgamation proposition to the membership.

In 2015, an amalgamation process was put inplace with the agreement of both Bentleighand Cheltenham Moorabbin members thus anew entity was created being the Bentleigh RSLSub Branch Inc, Incorporating the CheltenhamMoorabbin RSL.

Major renovations were commenced andcompleted in 2016 and the CheltenhamMoorabbin Campus reopened on the 22nd ofAugust that year.

Page 11: Bentleigh RSL Newsletter Vol. 64 Cheltenham Moorabbin RSL · songs of sinatra & friends – lyn & andrew monday 1st october tony diamond – & friends monday 5th november alex kyle’s

The amalgamated Bentleigh RSL Sub Branch Incnow has one committee of management andmanagement team and has attracted many newmembers.

Cheltenham Moorabbin RSL now offers avibrant and well attended venue, this is reflectedin the success of the Bistro which has exceeded allexpectation.

These things do not happen by accident andcredit must go to a cohesive managementcommittee and management team and also astaff who were up to the challenge. Recognitionmust also go to the membership of bothcampuses for embracing the amalgamation andentrusting the process to the management teamof the day to deliver.

Now there are two popular venues which providewide ranging welfare services, member activitiesand amenity to the membership, having a largepresence in both communities by providingscholarships to six secondary colleges, sponsoringa multitude of sporting groups and also providefundraising and financial support to local primaryschools, community groups, Army and Air forcecadet units and also local scout and SES groups.

Thankyou to our loyal Volunteers, Members and Staff for helping us achieve Sub Branchof the Year 2017.

2018 CITIZENOF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Ian Butcher - Citizen of the Year 2018 for the Glen Eira City Council

Ian has contributed 35 years of Community Service and is the driving force behind the Bentleigh RSL.

Ian is loyal and hardworking and has shown unwavering commitment to the RSL, engaging in all activities and supporting the organisation in a variety of administrative and executive positions, including his current position as President. Ian also supports local schools, sporting clubs and Scout, organising donations and their involvement in the ANZAC and Remembrance Day Commemorative service and March.

Congratulations Ian, this award is well deserved for everything you have contributed to the Bentleigh RSL

WELFARE REPORT

I can proudly state that in February 2018, I have officially worked at the Bentleigh RSL as the Welfare Coordinator for 10 years. Over the time I have seen many changes, but we adapt to the circumstances and move with the times. I feel I have made an impact on the lives of our veterans, war widows and families and will continue to do so with as much commitment and enthusiasm as when I first started a decade ago.

I could not have succeeded in my Welfare role without the support from Ian Butcher as President. Ian has shared my passion and drive and is a strong advocate of all the welfare services available to our veterans and members. It was Ian’s contributions to not only the RSL but the community that made me nominate him for the City of Glen Eira, Citizen of the Year 2018 and I am honoured to announce that he won this award in January 2018. He made a humble speech stating it’s a group effort and he could not have done it without a team around him, but Ian deserved this award because he has been a driving force behind the RSL with his progressive attitude. Congratulations, this award could not have gone to a more worthy recipient.

I now look forward to working alongside our newly appointed President, Warrick McDonald, in the future.

The Welfare Department has recently acquired a 6 seater KIA Carnival car to be used for the Veterans, war widows and members. The vehicle is being for used home and hospital visiting and assisting with appointments. I will be introducing many other programs such as personal shopping and transporting people to RSL events.

Thank you to all our volunteers and members who supported the Remembrance Day Appeal for 2017. We have raised a total amount of $47,282.55.

Please support the 2018 ANZAC Day Appeal by purchasing the $5.00

badge in At Ease.

We pride ourselves on assisting our members to live at home as independently as possible with all the resources available. Many people are unaware of the services they can access or are entitled to. We can offer a simple home visit or a phone call to start the process of how we can assist you.

We are expecting a big year with good results.

The Events calendar has been set with a big variety of venues listed. The presentation of our trophy winners were also made and congratulations go to:

Karl Abourizk, Joe Mack - Biggest Flathead caught for the year

Armando Azzolini - Biggest Snapper caught for the year.

Well done to you both. Good fishing.

We are also pleased to advise that the Victorian Fisheries Authority have approved the clubs application for the supply of 2 Heart Defibrillators.

We sincerely hope that we don’t have to use them but we are pleased to have these life saving machines available if required. Training for the use of same will be conducted by St Johns in the near future.

An invitiation for any new members of the Bentleigh RSL to contact Cliff Row on 0412 09 04 45

Or better still.. Come to one of our monthly meetings held at the RSL on the first Thursday of the new month at 7.30 pm. Reception will point you in the right direction to the meeting room.

Until next time, tight lines....

CHELTENHAM CAMPUS MEMORABILIAMembers, we need your help to build an impressive collection for our new memorabilia wall at the Cheltenham Moorabbin campus. So please, dust off those old trunks and boxes and let us know what you can share with your club. Our aim is to provide something special that will engage and educate the many visitors to the club and to enhance our reputation in the community.

To do this we are looking for a wide interpretation of the life of all the Australian service men and women, their activities and areas where they have or are serving. Small items and those that can be linked together to tell a personal story or experience of note are highly sought. Whilst we may not be able to display everything on offer a good cross section would be wonderful.

As you know, we currently have a solid representation of WW1 and WW2, mostly Army, focused pictures and items. Our priority in this call to arms is for items with a Korea, Vietnam, Middle East or recent peace keeping activities focus. We are also seeking any information you may have about the items currently on display at the club.

Please note all items displayed will be publicly acknowledged with the item(s).

If you have something that you think fits the bill please contact Tammy on 9583 1775 or Norm on 0417 551 548.
