What a roaring start in 2017 Benoni Camera Club has gotten off to.

From a decline of members, late 2016 we welcome at least 15 new members so please take your time to introduce yourselves to build a good ‘photographers’ spirit’. Talking of new members; Belinda Sim has blown a good breath of freshness into our club. This is clearly visible with our ‘PEEPS’ newsletter which is the latest hub in the club, as well as the introduction of the Benoni Camera Club website.

2 CUPS OF FLOUR ½ TEASPOON SALT

4 TEASPOONS BAKING POWDER 4‐6 TEASPOONS SUGAR

300ML MILK

Si the flour, salt and baking powder together

Add the sugar to the mixture Mix the oil, egg and milk Mix the wet and dry ingredients together with a knife.

Use a tablespoon to put the mixture into the muffin pan

Bake for ± 15 min on 220°C or un l golden brown.

My Lumix Panasonic camera FZ 18 was stolen recently and I have a few accessories that I can’t use now, but I wondered if anyone else could use them? There are some adaptor tubes, a digital high definition 2x telephoto lens, a .5x wide angle lens I also have some lenses my late husband used for his Ricoh KR – 10m Camera: Sigma zoom 23-200m 1:3.5-

How to submit a Photograph for Judging or Set Subject

Put image into Photoshop. Please file and keep the original (before cropping and tweaking) Follow the instructions below Crop the image Tweak the colour Enhance Adjust Lighting Levels Use the histogram Frame Image Resize Canvas Size 3 (or 5) pixs choose colour of frame Resize Image Resize Image Size Not greater than 1080 pixels height and 1920 pixels width (do the height first and the width will generally conform) > At bottom choose Bicubic

How does the POINT system work? If you have the required number of gold’s and are not advancing you may need to look at your points. According to the club constitution , promotion criterion is based not only on achieving a given amount of gold awards and/ or salon acceptances but also on club points.

Certificate of Merit = 4 points

Best in category winners score an additional bonus point

Gold Award = 3 points

sections + 80 club points. 30 gold awards (or COMs) + 15 Salon Acceptances. In addition, the member must have served the

club in some capacity .

When do you meet? 1st Wednesday of every month, 18h30 for 19h00 until ±21h30 Where do you meet? Northfield Methodist Church, Hurricane Road, Northmead, Benoni I want to come and see what happens at you club. Who do I speak to when I arrive? Committee Members wear YELLOW name tags – they are really friendly. They will ask you if you would like to sit next to another member who will chat to you during the evening to explain the goings on. Alternatively e-mail [email protected]

What happens at your club? Between 40 and 60 members come along to view their own and other members displayed photographs. We have a different judge each month that will critique and give advice on your photograph and then award each photograph a bronze, silver, gold, or Certificate of Merit (COM) (the highest award). The next month you may collect your certificates from the member table.

Can I join and come to meetings without entering photographs, until I feel ready to enter? Certainly. You may even enter a “comment ONLY” image to get some indication of what the judge thinks of your image.

How do I join? Please see Application Form at the back of this issue. An annual payment please (which includes the monthly light dinner) before you can start submitting photographs. What is the cost and where can I pay? New Members once off = R80.00 admin fee, Annual fee of R375.00, Students R275.00, Non-member regular visitor R190.00 Do I have to enter every month? No What are the BANKING DETAILS? Benoni Camera Club Bank, ABSA Bank, ACC NO: 29525870, Branch Code 632005. USE NAME & SURNAME AS A REFERENCE Do I have to be present at the club on the night that I entered photographs? No, you do not have to be at the club. It is better to be at the club though, as you will hear what the judge says about your images and you will learn how to improve. Are refreshments served at meetings? Of course, tea and coffee along with a light dinner.

How many photos may I submit each month? If you enter prints each member is allowed to submit a total of 2 photos from any category each month. If you submit 'E' photographs each member is allowed to submit a total of 2 photos from any category each month.

If you enter both Print and “E”, you may submit a total of 4. You MAY NOT enter 3 print and 1 “E”, Set Subjects is 1 entry per category 'E' or Print or both.

What kind of photographs can I take and what sizes? CLUB ENTRY RULES


E ach summer, at air shows across the globe, awestruck spectators enjoy the power and precision of aerial demonstration teams and

individual performers. In addition to what is happening in the air, there are often static displays on the ground. For photographers, these events provide outstanding photographic opportunities.

Day of the Show It is recommended that you get to the show at least one hour in advance in order to find parking, and a shooting location. Air shows can be very crowded, with numbers reaching into the tens of thousands. By arriving early, you may be able to set your gear up in a prime area. Generally, the performers enter from the left and right, with their stunts done at “show centre.” A good viewing spot is important, as it allows you to focus and track the incoming jets. When possible, I try to pick a place that’s in the shade with a full view of the show centre. However, many airports and military bases do not have trees to block the sun. To protect yourself from the elements, I strongly urge you to bring sunscreen.

Lens Choices When I photographed my first air show many years ago, I used a 28–135mm lens. Yet, unless the plane was flying directly above me, I found that much more reach

was necessary. Today, I use a 70–200mm for action that’s directly overhead, and a 400mm for tighter shooting. My camera does not have a full frame sensor, so a 400mm with a 1.6 crop factor is actually an effective 640mm lens. Just remember, air shows are usually several hours in duration, and longer lenses can get quite heavy. Image stabilization is a nice feature, but a tripod will give your

arms a break and allow you to create sharp images consistently. While the majority of my aviation work is shot with longer lenses, I find that wide angle lenses are also useful for performance teams that are spread out in wide formations. By utilizing a few different options, you can capture more of the action, and will come home with a diverse collection of images.

this, a fast shutter speed of around 1/1000 is recommended. Yet, like most aspects of photography, there are exceptions to this. With older planes, a shutter speed of 1/1000 will freeze the propellers. The effect actually reduces the appearance of motion, and gives the image an unnatural look. To show the movement of the propeller, a shutter speed of 1/90 is a good starting point. However, you may have to adjust it slightly to 1/60 or slower, depending on the speed of the plane. Of course, with these slow shutter speeds you will want to pay close attention to your camera

technique to ensure sharp images.

In-Camera Metering Even today’s sophisticated DSLR metering systems can be tricked by certain situations. When exposing a jet against a clear blue summer sky, automatic camera settings will often properly expose the sky, and leave you with an underexposed plane. In order to have full control over the camera, I prefer to use the in-camera spot meter along with the manual exposure mode. Semi automatic modes can be effective as long as you are utilizing your histogram,

and making adjustments as needed. Most often, I find myself around 1/1000 of a second, ISO 400, and f/5.6. Of course, this can change drastically depending on the weather conditions of that particular day.

Focus Rather than trying to frame the perfect shot, I like to use a high speed burst mode and fire off many frames for each pass. This technique increases the percentage of keepers. Following high speed objects this way takes some getting used to. Thankfully, most cameras feature continuous

focusing, also known as AI Servo. This mode will allow you to continually focus on moving subjects. To use this feature successfully, keep your centre focusing point over the aircraft with your cable release or shutter held halfway down. As you follow the plane through your viewfinder, the camera will automatically adjust the focus as the aircraft gets closer. When you are ready to make an image, simply press the shutter all the way down. Luckily, air show organizers often arrange “photo passes,” where the pilot flies at a reduced speed. Don’t get too comfortable though, they return to full speed after just a few slow turns.

Memory With all of this high flying, fast-paced action, you will likely go through many memory cards rapidly. I bring a portable hard drive with me, and download the contents of the card while continuing to shoot. Once I’m sure the images have been safely written to the drive, I format the card in camera and reuse it. I like to shoot in RAW format whenever possible. However, if you are short on memory cards, and don’t have a portable hard drive, you may want to consider shooting in the Large/Fine JPEG format. This will allow you to f it more images on the card than RAW. What to Look For Smoke trails and after burner effects are great

additions to an aviation image. Be ready for them, as they happen quickly. The trails of white smoke are actually created by pumping oil into the exhaust pipe. This is particularly interesting when used by an entire formation of planes. The patterns of smoke can be used to make for a more artistic composition. In addition, it adds a bit of contrast to the otherwise plain blue sky. I also look to capture the interaction between two planes. When pilots are flying side by side with their wings nearly touching, a great deal of tension is introduced to the photo. By freezing this moment in time you are also showcasing the precision and skill of the daring pilots. Enjoy the show!
