APPENDIX  :  MOST  SIGNIFICANT  RESEARCH  CONTRIBUTIONS

CV,  Benoit  Gosselin   13   April  2015

My  previous  research  contributions  have  been  in  the  field  of  integrated  circuits  for  biomedical  instrumentation,   low-‐power   electronics   and   implantable   devices   for   biosignals   recording   and  processing.   It   has   generated   more   than   110   articles   published   in   journals   and   international  conferences,  5  book  chapters  and  5  patent  applications,  which  have  been  cited  over  710  times  per  Google  Scholar.   I  have  been  active   in  the  circuits  and  systems  and  biomedical  engineering  community  for  more  than  14  years,  and  I  am  a  leader  in  the  area  of  new  microelectronic  devices  dedicated  to  bio-‐implantable  devices.    Low-‐power  integrated  circuits  for  bioinstrumentation  [J1,  J2,  P1,  B1,  C14]  This   research   contribution   is   in   the   area   of   integrated   circuits   and   microsystems   for  bioinstrumentation,   specifically   for   monitoring   brain   electrophysiology   in   neuroscience  applications  using  multi-‐channel   integrated  electronic   interfaces.   I  designed  the  first   low-‐noise  integrated  amplifier  to  use  active  feedback  for  improving  instrumentation  of  weak  bioelectrical  signals   from   brain-‐inserted  microelectrodes.   The   amplifier  was   fabricated   in   a   CMOS   process  and  validated  into  in  vivo  trials.  This  multidisciplinary  work  led  to  a  U.S.  provisory  patent  (USPTO  60/747,723,  filed  in  2006)  and  several  papers  cited  over  110  times.  Additionally,  [J1]  has  been  listed   in   the   top   10   accessed   documents   over   2008-‐2009.   This   paper   along   with   [J3],   are  presently  listed  in  the  top  10  most  cited  papers  of  this  journal.    16-‐channel  Integrated  Neural  Interface  [J3,  J5,  C15,  C17,  C18,  C19,  C27,  B2]  I  used  the  design  described  above  along  with  several  other  integrated  building  blocks  presented  in   several   separate   papers,   to   build   a   16-‐channels   brain   monitoring   implant.   Such   an  implantable  microsystem  consisted  of  a  multi-‐channel  data  acquisition  ASIC  (application  specific  integrated  circuit)  and  a  digital  signal  processing  ASIC,  combined  together  with  a  medical-‐grade  stainless  steel  microelectrode  array  to  extract,  digitize  and  transmit  neural  data  from  the  cortex  to  a  remote  host  controller.  The  microsystem  was  validated  in  vivo  at  the  Montreal  Neurological  Institute  and  U.  Montreal,  and  is  at,  or  still  near  the  state  of  the  art,  with  one  the  best  figure  of  merit.  Related  papers  have  been  cited  over  160  times.      Ultra-‐low-‐power  integrated  circuits  for  neural  signal  processing  [J4,  J6,  J7,  C21,  C22,  C25,  C26]  Electronic   implants   necessitate   extremely   low-‐power   consumption   for   safety   and   maximum  lifetime.   I   created   low-‐power   circuit   techniques   to   extend   the   lifetime   of   such   implantable  devices,   and   I   designed   innovative   bioinstrumentation   systems   achieving   ultra-‐low-‐power   by  leveraging   novel   electronic   power   saving   schemes   and   specialized   analog   signal   processing  circuits.   Related  papers   have  been   cited  over   120   times  while   [J4]  was   published   in   a   special  issue  along  with  the  work  of   international   leaders,   like  R.  Harisson,  U.  of  Utah,  M.  Ghovanloo,  Ga  Tech  and  K.  Shenoy,  Stanford  U.

CV,  Benoit  Gosselin   14   April  2015

Tongue  drive  system:  A  wireless  and  wearable  assistive  technology  [J9,  C29,  C31]  I  contributed  to  advance  the  tongue  drive  system  (TDS),  a  new  minimally  invasive  wireless,  and  wearable   tongue-‐operated   assistive   technology   that   enables   individuals   with   severe   physical  disabilities   to   control   environments  with   their   free   tongue  motion.   I  miniaturized   the   former  external  TDS  into  an  intraoral  version  (the  iTDS)  that  reliably  fits  inside  a  user’s  mouth.  The  iTDS  is  based  on  a  low-‐power  ASIC  that  seamlessly  reads  and  transmits  the  tongue  motion  wirelessly  with   high   fidelity,   enabling   more   comfort   and   ease   of   use   for   the   patient.   Several   circuit  innovations   put   this   ASIC   at   the   state-‐of-‐the-‐art.   Its   performance  was   presented   in   a   journal  paper  [J9]  and  in  prestigious  conferences  [C29],  [C31],  such  as  the  IEEE  ISSCC.    Wireless   multimodal   platforms   for   combined   optogenetics   and   electrophysiology   [J19,   J24,  J27  C37,  C47,  C48,  C54,  C55,  C56,  P5,  P6]  Through   collaborative   R&D   with   Doric   Lenses   Inc.,   my   team   developed   the   first   wireless  optogenetic  bioinstrument   to  combine  optical   stimulation  and  multi-‐channel   recording  means  in   the  same  device   for  conducting   in-‐vivo  experiments  with   freely  moving   transgenic   rodents.  Such   an   innovative   system,   which   includes   on-‐the-‐fly   signal   detection   and   data   compression  capabilities,   is   entirely   built   using   off-‐the-‐shelf   components   mounted   on   a   lightweight   and  small-‐size  foldable  rigid-‐flex  printed  circuit  board.  The  headstage  has  been  validated  in-‐vivo  at  the   CRIUSMQ   with   Y.   De   Koninck’s   group.   Such   a   multidisciplinary   work,   which   has   been  awarded  Best  research  project  at   the  2014  MEDTEQ  Forum,  has   led  to  2   invention  disclosures  [P5],   [P6],   a   journal   paper   [J19]   and   several   presentations   in   international   conferences   [C37,  C47,  C8,  C55,  C54,  C56].  Industrial  partner  Doric  Lenses  is  supporting  this  work.    High-‐density   wireless   brain-‐machine   interfaces   and   smart   energy   harvesting   platforms   for  neuroscience  applications  [J8,  J10,  J11,  J13-‐J15,  J18,  J20,  J25,  C30,  C32-‐C34,  C36,  C38-‐C44,  C50,  C51,  C57,  C58,  B3,  B4]  My   team   designed   miniature   electronic   recording   strategies   for   wirelessly   gathering   brain  activity  from  large  amounts  of  neurons  under  very  low-‐power  and  small  form  factor  constraints  [J8],   [J11],   [C30],   [C39],   [C42],   [C44],   [C50],   [C51],   [C57],   [C58],   [B3],   [B4].  Our  novel   low-‐noise  low-‐power   analog   front-‐end   design   to   interface   a  multi-‐channel   optrode  won   the  Best   paper  award   at   the   2014   IEEE  NEWCAS  Conference.   Another   aspect   of   this   research   deals  with   the  design  of  energy-‐efficient,   safe  and  reliable  communication  and  power  harvesting  systems   for  bioimplants.  We  modeled  the  biological   interaction  of  tissues  with  small   implantable  antennas  and  we  designed   a   high-‐data   rate   full   duplex   integrated   transceiver   based  on  ultra-‐wideband  impulse   radio   for   high-‐density   implanted   systems   [J13],   [J14],   [J18],   [J20],   [C31],   [C33],   [C38],  [C43],  [C46].  An  innovative  power  transmission  system  based  on  a  new  multicoil  approach  has  also  been  developed  [J10],  [J15],  [J18],  [J25],  [C34],  [C36],  [C40],  [C41],  and  a  patent  application  has  been  filed  at  UL  to  protect  this  new  intellectual  property  [P3].
