Profesional Writingl: PR: Grade of C (2.0) or better in ENC 1102, junior standing, or

C.I. Writing effective correspondence, memos, proposals, and informal and formal reports. Fall, Spring.

III. Course Overview

This course will introduce you to professional writing practices, including professional communication, document design, and oral presentations. You will be assigned

multiple writing assignments and we will explore what it means to write in a professional setting, how to be clear, concise and accurate, and how the platform we write

for affects your writing and the purpose of that writing. You will practice writing to develop, refine, and communicate ideas in a professional context. You should expect

to write formally and informally; produce drafts; read and respond to each other’s drafts; and revise, edit, and proofread.

IV. Course Objectives

The primary goal of this course is to strengthen core communication skills to be used in business, technical, and other professional types of communication. After

completing this course, students should feel comfortable crafting job application letters and resumes and other professional materials by analyzing their audiences’

needs. Additionally, students should be able to identify design and information issues, and be able to correct them. Students will also gain experience working on

VIII. Supplementary (Optional) Texts and Materials

OWL Purdue (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/)

IX. Grade Dissemination

All grades will be posted through Canvas. You may receive feedback in a variety of ways: track changes in MS word, revisions in Google Docs, or voice recordings

through Canvas.

X. Course Policies: Grades

Late Work Policy: There are no make-ups for in-class writing, quizzes, the midterm, or the final exam. Projects turned in late will be assessed a penalty: one full

letter grade per each day it is late. Any assignment more than 4 days late will receive no credit.

Extra Credit Policy: I will offer one extra-credit option for this course. Extra-credit is not point based, but, if you are stuck between full letter grade and a + or -, you

will be awarded the higher of the two. To learn more about extra credit, you must arrange an online meeting with me. I am open to Skype, Gchat, or through Canvas.

Grades of "Incomplete": The current university policy concerning incomplete grades will be followed in this course. Incomplete grades are given only in situations

where unexpected emergencies prevent a student from completing the course and the remaining work can be completed the next semester. Your instructor is the final

authority on whether you qualify for an incomplete. Incomplete work must be finished by the end of the subsequent semester or the “I” will automatically be recorded

as an “F” on your transcript.

Rewrite Policy: Rewrites are not optional; they are required on all drafts. However, because we will spend significant time in class on revising and drafting, final

drafts are final, and rewrites will not be allowed.

Group Work Policy: You will sign up for groups for the entire semester. As the workforce goes global, learning how to cooperate and manage projects online and at

distances is an important skill to develop. Therefore, you will be required to work with your group for the entire semester. You may sign up for groups on this Google

Doc. From there, I will set up collaborations for you within Canvas with your group members. You should expect to collaborate with one another on a weekly basis.

During the second week, you will create a memo stating which day/days you plan on meeting each week. Please note: all assignments (even those performed

individually) will require peer review. Non-peer reviewed work will not be accepted. It is my belief that Tuesdays/Wednesdays are a good day to set up a time for

online meeting with your peers.

XI. Course Policies: Technology and Media

Email: I check email at least once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I will do my best to respond to all email inquiries within a 24-hour turn around. However,

there are times when this may not be possible. There is no guarantee that email received by the professor the day before/day of/or night before an assignment is due

will be answered.

Canvas: All materials (besides the required text books) will be delivered through Canvas. You should have access to the course modules, course materials, the

syllabus, quizzes, and assignments through Canvas. If you are having problems with Canvas please consult the student guide located at

http://guides.instructure.com/m/4212 (http://guides.instructure.com/m/4212) and the technology discussion (https://webcourses.ucf.edu/courses/953344

/discussion_topics/1693284) post. Many times your peers are your best resources.

Technology: This course will ask you to participate in some different technologies. These will include: Google Docs (http://www.docs.google.com) (please use

your Knights Email account to create your Google Doc account) (http://www.docs.google.com) , Microsoft Word, and Canvas. It is highly recommended that you

download either the Google Chrome (https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/?&brand=CHMA&utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-bk&

utm_medium=ha) or Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) web browser. Sometimes Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera have issues with

running Canvas. Once again, should you have questions about how to use these tools, please consult their user guides or post in the technology discussion post. I

will do my best to address technology issues in the technology discussion post.

Classroom Devices: There should be no need for clickers, cell phones, calculators, or other extraneous technologies in this class.

XII. Course Policies: Student Expectations

Disability Access: The University of Central Florida is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for all persons with disabilities. This syllabus is available

in alternate formats upon request. Students with disabilities who need accommodations in this course must contact the professor at the beginning of the semester to

discuss needed accommodations. No accommodations will be provided until the student has met with the professor to request accommodations. Students who need

accommodations must be registered with Student Disability Services, Student Resource Center Room 132, phone (407) 823-2371, TTY/TDD only phone (407)

823-2116, before requesting accommodations from the professor.

Attendance Policy: Because this is an online writing workshop, your participation is at the utmost importance. Should you choose not to participate, your grade will

be severely affected. Please be mindful of the due dates and communicate with your group members ahead of time to arrange which days you plan to have work

submitted to one another, and when you plan to have that work peer reviewed. Work which has not been peer reviewed will not be accepted.

Professionalism Policy: You are expected to fulfill all requirements of the course. Should you have concerns, please send me a message through Canvas and I will

address them as best as possible. Please keep in mind that online communication frequently lacks the facial and tone expressions as permitted by face-to-face

communication. It may be best to meet with me or others in the course in person to address any serious issues that arise. Please be mindful, respectful, and

courteous to one another. Also, though emoticons, explanation marks, and ALL CAPS may be effective in communicating your ideas, please use them sparingly and

for mature rhetorical purposes :)

Academic Conduct Policy: Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. If you are uncertain as to what constitutes academic dishonesty, please consult

The Golden Rule, the University of Central Florida's Student Handbook (http://www.goldenrule.sdes.ucf.edu/) for further details. As in all University courses, The

Golden Rule Rules of Conduct will be applied. Violations of these rules will result in a record of the infraction being placed in your file and receiving a zero on the

work in question AT A MINIMUM. At the instructor’s discretion, you may also receive a failing grade for the course. Confirmation of such incidents can also result in

expulsion from the University.

University Writing Center: The University Writing Center (UWC) is a free resource for UCF undergraduates and graduates. At the UWC, a trained writing consultant

will work individually with you on anything you're writing (in or out of class), at any point in the writing process from brainstorming to editing. Appointments are

recommended, but not required. For more information or to make an appointment, visit the UWC website at http://www.uwc.ucf.edu, stop by MOD 608, or call

407.823.2197.
