Beneficial Facts of Pearl
Gemstone
For many years and also even today many people believe that natural pearls are
created when oysters rise to the surface of water during dawn and collect dew
drops in their opened shells, that later turned into pearls. Then from 15th till 17th
century, people believed that pearls were nothing but oysters’ eggs. Then it was
only during 18th century that pearls were created because of the intrusion of a
parasite into the oyster.
Some Intresting Facts about this Gemstone are listed as follows:
# 1 - The pearl gemstone is the birthstone for those born in June. The June
birthstone poem reflects some of the properties with which the Pearl is associated -
loyalty, faithfulness and friendship. The Traditional Metaphysical Properties for the June
Birthstone Pearl are modesty, chastity and purity. The healing properties of the June
birthstone are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to the heart, spleen,
stomach, intestine & ulcer problems. The Pearl is also used to enhance personal
integrity.
# 2 - Pearls are the only gemstone made by living animals and Animal name is
oyster. The common misconception is that pearls are formed when an oyster gets a pebble inside of its shell. This is not the case. Pearls are formed when a mollusk gets a piece of organic matter inside its shell, usually as a result of a parasite or injury. The oyster senses the foreign matter and coats it with a mineral and a protein, resulting in a substance called nacre.
# 3 - There are two types of Pearls:
Natural Pearls are produced when an iritant or any organic substance enters in
the moluusc shell naturally without any outer interfernce. Natural Pearls are
found in either saltwater found in gulfs, seas and oceans or freshwater pearls
found in rivers and lakes
On the other hand , the most popular form of Pearl are the Cultured Pearls that
are produced when man has intentionally introduced an irritant into the mollusc,
these oystres are then preserved in man made pools and ponds and then the
perals or we must say cultured pearls are taken out of them.
Cultured Pearls are not very different from the Purely Natural Pearls as both are
produced inside the oyster through same procedure except the human interfernce in
case of cultured pearls. Thus the price difference comes into exsistence. Natural Pearls
are way more expensive than the cultured ones and also very rare.
# 4 - Virtually all pearls today are "cultured" or "cultivated". Harvesting "natural"
pearls was compromised by water pollution, tsunamis, and other phenomena that made
it difficult to leave the oysters safely in the water long enough to grow sizeable pearls.
So it has been practised to keep the oysters in cultured pools and ponds so as to obtain
these beautiful gems out of them.
# 5 - Every pearl is unique and they all come with some imperfection, every mollusk
takes its own time to produce a perfect quality pearl. Some take months and some
might take years to form a small sized pearls. The time factor depends upon the kind of
environment and type of moullsk it has been forming into. Time factor makes these
Gemstones precious of all.
# 6 - Pearls come in a variety of colors and shades, from white, cream, and pink to
black with blue, green, or purple overtones. Many factors are responsible for the color of a pearl, but it is for the most part up to chance. The material that makes up a pearl, known as nacre, is secreted by the oyster as a response to an irritant inside the shell. The factors that contribute to the color of a pearl include the type of oyster, the thickness and number of layers of nacre, and possibly trace elements in the oyster's aquatic environment. The thicker the nacre, the richer the color of the pearl will be, and the more iridescence it will show. Black Pearls used to be quite rare and very valuable, but they are now cultured and consequently much more widely available. Natural white Pearls are rarer and more valuable than cultured black pearls.
# 7 - Pearls are made up mostly of calcium, and for centuries people have been
crushing low-grade pearls for use as a pale, translucent powder. The powder gives the
skin a shimmery glow and was favored by Japanese geishas for the shimmery effect it
gave their skin. Pearl powder contains rich higher fatty alcohol which is easily absorbed
by human skin cells, increases cell viability and promotes metabolism. And the pearl
powder can prompt the growth of the collagen cell to connect tissue, improving skin
regeneration, and keeping skin soft and white.
# 8 - Cultured or freshwater pearls are considered to offer the power of love, money,
protection, and luck. Pearls are thought to give wisdom through experience, to quicken
the laws of karma and to cement engagements and love relationships. They are thought
to keep children safe.
Early Chinese myths told of pearls falling from the sky when dragons fought. Ancient
legend says that pearls were thought to be the tears of the gods and the Greeks
believed that wearing pearls would promote marital bliss and prevent newlywed women
from crying.
# 9 - Pearl is used to remove the evil effects of moon and in turn it strengthens the
mind force and brings good sleep. Pearl is very useful for ladies as it increases their
beauty and facial luster. It develops good harmony between husband and wife. Pearl in
combination with Rudraksha helps to solve problems related to depression and
pessimism. It inspires love and faith between the two partners. It also gives good
memory and helps to cure insomnia, eye diseases uterine problems, heart problems,
T.B., constipation, hysteria etc.
